Freedom House is a US-based Human rights watchdog.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Freedom in the World 2021 Report:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Freedom in the World<\/strong> is an annual global report that tracks political rights and civil liberties. The report has been produced since 1973.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Methodology<\/strong>: The report\u2019s methodology is derived from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The UN General Assembly adopted the declaration in 1948.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The report assesses <\/strong>the individual&#8217;s real-world rights and freedoms. It doesn&#8217;t focus on governments or government performance in Human Rights.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Countries: <\/strong>The 2021 edition covers developments in 195 countries and 15 territories from January 1, 2020, through December 31, 2020.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Parameters: <\/strong>The countries are awarded scores based on:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Political rights indicators<\/strong> such as the electoral process, political pluralism and participation, and government functioning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Civil liberties indicators are <\/strong>related to freedom of expression and belief, associational and organizational rights, the rule of law and personal autonomy, and individual rights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Categories: <\/strong>These two score totals are then weighted equally to determine a country\/territory\u2019s status of <strong>a) <\/strong>Free <strong>b) <\/strong>Partly Free or <strong>c) <\/strong>Not Free. Countries are ranked from 1 to 100, 100 being the ranking for the freest country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Findings Related to India:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India\u2019s rank has fallen from 83 to 88 out of 195 countries and 15 territories.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s score decreased from 71 to 67.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s status has been downgraded from \u2018Free\u2019 to \u2018Partly Free\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why has India\u2019s status been downgraded? <\/strong>The report has highlighted the following reasons for the downgrade:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use of the sedition law and other charges in recent years to deter free speech<\/li>\n<li>Government\u2019s coronavirus response including the lockdown.<\/li>\n<li>The migrant crisis and violent and discriminatory enforcement by police and civilian vigilantes<\/li>\n<li>Attack on Minorities<\/li>\n<li>The decrease in Judicial Independence among others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other key Findings Related to India:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kashmir: <\/strong>The Freedom House report has listed \u201cIndian Kashmir\u201d separately and retained its status as last year of \u201cnot free\u201d. The score fell from 28 to 27.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Internet Freedom in India: <\/strong>India\u2019s Internet Freedom Score has stayed at 51. However, the report has stated that Internet freedom in India has declined dramatically for a third straight year. It is due to reasons like Internet shutdowns, blocked content, misinformation spread by political leaders, online harassment among others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other Key Findings Globally:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>There is a decline in global democracy<\/strong> over the last 15 years. Nearly 75% of the world\u2019s population lived in a country that faced deterioration over the last year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Finland, Norway, and Sweden are the most free countries in the world<\/strong>, with a score of 100.
