Recently another feather in the cap was added with the launch of Brazil\u2019s Amazonia-1 satellite last week from Sriharikota.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>About the recent mission<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ISRO\u2019s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle(PSLV-C51) rocket launched Brazil\u2019s Amazonia-1 (an earth observation satellite) and 18 co-passenger satellites.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was the <\/span><b>first <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dedicated mission for <\/span><b>New Space India Ltd (NSIL),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the commercial arm of ISRO.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mission was conducted under a commercial arrangement with Spaceflight Inc., USA.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Read More<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/isro-successfully-places-brazils-amazonia-1-and-18-satellites-in-orbit\/\">ISRO successfully places Brazil&#8217;s &#8220;Amazonia-1 and 18 Satellites&#8221; in orbit (forumias.com)<\/a><\/p>\n<h5><b>India&#8217;s space industry:\u00a0<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sector has<\/span><b> grown exponentially over the last six decades<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with considerable expansion in its scope and domain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/answered-discuss-indias-achievements-in-the-field-of-space-science-and-technology-how-the-application-of-this-technology-has-helped-india-in-its-socio-economic-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diversified from simple mapping services in the 1960<\/a>s, at present to diversified services:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Design and development of launch vehicles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Development of satellites and related technologies for earth observation, telecommunication &amp; broadband\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entering the domain of navigation, meteorology, and space science<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R&amp;D in space sciences<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most recently &#8211; planetary exploration with MOM (Mars Orbiter Mission)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The success of the sector can be attributed to <\/span><b>Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and other notable people. <\/b>All of them<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0believed in the potential of India\u2019s Space sector.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country spent around US$ 1.8 billion on space programs in 2019-20.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country on average launched <\/span><b>5-7 satellites per year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in recent years while the figure for the US is around 19 satellites. Similarly, China launches approximately 34 satellites.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Initiatives in Space Sector<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Opening the Space Sector<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The Government in June 2020 opened up the Space sector. It allowed the participation of the Indian private sector in the entire domain of space activities. This includes satellite creation, launches, and space-based services that were earlier not open to them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Draft Space Activities Bill, 2017<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The bill aims to promote and regulate the space activities of India. It focuses on encouraging the participation of private-sector agencies under the guidance and authorisation of the government through the Department of Space.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>New Space India Limited (NSIL)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is a Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Department of Space that was established in 2019. It has been mandated to space-related products and services emanating from Indian Space Programme<br \/>\nto global customers. It will enable the Indian industry to scale up a high-technology manufacturing base.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has been established for promoting industries and <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/answered-india-has-contributed-tremendously-in-space-exploration-do-you-think-india-should-expand-private-players-role-in-its-space-industry-critically-analyse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attracting private investment in the space sector.<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Training and Collaboration: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ISRO and its research centers have active programs with academic and research institutes across the country. They are also training personnel from numerous countries around the globe.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Opportunities for India&#8217;s Space Sector<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Low Cost<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The Indian space sector has the potential of launching space vehicles at a much lower cost. This was seen in Mars Orbiter Mission which was 10 times cheaper than western missions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Good Record and Trust:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> India has so far launched 342 foreign satellites for 34 countries using its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle platform. This has developed a trust in Indian space potential in other countries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Presence of Budding Entrepreneurs:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As per industry estimates, there are more than 40 start-ups working in India on space and satellite projects. It can complement the efforts of the government.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Rising Demand in the Future:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Technology innovations in the future will increase the need for higher bandwidth capacity, throughput speeds, improved radar, and thermal imaging. This can be readily met by strengthening the space sector.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Unrealised Potential<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: As per Satellite Industry Association Report (2020), the global space economy in 2019 was valued at US$ 366 billion. However, the Indian space economy is valued at US$ 7 billion, which is around 2 percent, signifying how much the sector can truly achieve.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Challenges For India&#8217;s Space Sector<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Lower Spending: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The funds allocated to the space sector are very less in comparison to other countries. The US spent 10 times and China 6 times more than India in the space sector in 2019-20.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Absence of a Clear Legislative Framework<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The draft Space Activities bill was introduced way back in 2017 but hasn\u2019t been passed yet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Lack of robust Dispute Settlement Mechanism:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This discourages private investment in the space sector. The void was seen in Antrix &#8211; Devas cancelled satellite deal. The Government of India owes nearly $1.2 billion to Devas Multimedia as per an order of a tribunal of the International Chamber of Commerce.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Brain Drain:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> India produces the best brains in the world but is unable to retain them. People emigrate from the country for better opportunities and careers that might hamper the development of the space sector.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Managing big constellations of satellites:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Although India has a good potential to launch satellites, managing a huge number of satellites in space could be a challenging task in the future. This should be done keeping in mind the <\/span><b>possibilities of a future space war<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Suggestions<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plan to set up an<\/span><b> independent tribunal <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to adjudicate disputes among private space entities should be implemented promptly.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>passage of the Space Activities Bill<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should also be done in order to give private players greater clarity and protection. This should involve proper consultation and discussions with the concerned stakeholders.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The focus should be on <\/span><b>aiding space start-ups to penetrate rural India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>encourage youth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to build careers in space applications and sciences.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>NSIL should function more than a marketer of ISRO\u2019s technologie<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s. It should find newer business opportunities and expand the sector itself.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country should also <\/span><b>enhance spending <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">towards the sector considering the huge future potential and robust returns on investment.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country must do <\/span><b>more collaboration and research <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with pioneer countries like the US, Russia, etc. who are already managing big constellations of satellites. Further, programs like Mission Shakti (an anti-satellite weapon test) can help avoid future space wars.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Conclusion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian Space sector possesses huge untapped potential which can be realized with adequate policy measures by the government.
