It is an independent research organization founded in 2014 by Swedish political scientist Staffan Lindberg.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objective: <\/strong>The report summarizes the state of democracies of the world against the backdrop of developments, over the past decade.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data: <\/strong>The report gathered its data using surveys from country experts and then analysed using a statistical model.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Key Findings Related to India:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>India is rated as autocratic along with Pakistan. It is a poor rating than both its neighbors Bangladesh and Nepal.<\/li>\n<li>India is also among 25 \u201cautocratizing nations\u201d along with Brazil, Turkey, and other countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Reasons for the downgrading of India:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Frequent use of <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/what-is-criminal-defamation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defamation(Section 499)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/what-is-sedition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sedition(Section 124-A)<\/a> to silence journalists and critics.<\/li>\n<li>Use of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act(UAPA) to place constraints on civil society.<\/li>\n<li>The passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 to grant citizenship based on religious lines.<\/li>\n<li>Increased use of Foreign Contributions Regulation Act(FCRA) to restrict the entry, exit, and functioning of Civil Society Organisations(CSO).<\/li>\n<li>In general, the report mentions <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-security-laws-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Security laws<\/a> are getting misused in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Other key Global Findings:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>The liberal democracies have reduced over the past decade from 41 countries to 32 countries.<\/li>\n<li>The global decline during the past decade is increasing especially in the Asia-Pacific region, Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/rahul-gandhi-flags-indias-slide-in-democratic-norms\/article34045122.ece\"><strong>The Hindu<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
