{"id":95963,"date":"2021-03-17T17:11:47","date_gmt":"2021-03-17T11:41:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=95963"},"modified":"2021-03-17T19:58:57","modified_gmt":"2021-03-17T14:28:57","slug":"genome-mapping-of-indian-ocean-by-nio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/genome-mapping-of-indian-ocean-by-nio\/","title":{"rendered":"Genome mapping of Indian Ocean by NIO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What is the News?<br \/>\n<\/strong>National Institute of Oceanography(NIO) has launched its first-of-its-kind project of Genome Mapping in the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>About the Genome Mapping in the Indian Ocean Project:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Aim of the Project:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>To reveal the internal working of the body of the ocean at a cellular level.<\/li>\n<li>To understand the biochemistry and the response of the ocean to climate change, nutrient stress and increasing pollution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Duration of the Project: <\/strong>The project will take three years to complete.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>How will the Project be conducted?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>The NIO research team onboard its <strong>research vessel Sindhu Sadhana <\/strong>will travel from India&#8217;s east coast, all the way to Australia, then onward towards Port Louis in Mauritius and up to the border of Pakistan.<\/li>\n<li>During this journey, they will <strong>gather samples for genome mapping<\/strong> of microorganisms at an average depth of 5 km.<\/li>\n<li>They will then <strong>map the DNA and RNA of these microorganisms<\/strong> just like gene mapping on human blood samples.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Significance of the Project:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The genome mapping will enable scientists <\/strong>to identify the factors controlling the changes in RNA, DNA in the oceans and various stressors impacting them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The project will also help in identifying<\/strong> which part of the ocean has a greater concentration of which mineral or element.Scientists will then use these as tracers to tackle the causative factors for excess or lack of a certain mineral or element and suggest possible solutions for their mitigation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Further, the genome mapping of oceans <\/strong>will enable commercial biotechnology applications from anticancer treatments and industrial enzymes to antiviral molecules.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>What is Genome Mapping?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Genome refers to an organism\u2019s complete set of DNA which includes all its genes and mapping these genes simply means finding out the location of these genes in a chromosome.<\/li>\n<li>Therefore, Genome mapping essentially means figuring out the location of a specific gene on a particular region of the chromosome and also determining the location of and relative distances between other genes on that chromosome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About National Institute of Oceanography(NIO):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>NIO<\/strong> is an autonomous research organization established in 1966.It is one of the 37 constituent laboratories of the Council of Scientific &amp; Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Focus: <\/strong>The principal focus of research has been on observing and understanding special oceanographic characteristics of the Indian Ocean.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Headquarters: <\/strong>Goa<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/nio-scientists-indian-ocean-research-project-explained-7223532\/\"><strong>Indian Express<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
