It aims towards preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Secondly, Adoption: <\/strong>The Council of Europe Committee of Ministers adopted the convention in 2011. It came into force in 2014.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thirdly, Purpose: <\/strong>The convention sets minimum standards for governments to meet when tackling violence against women. Once ratified the Convention is legally binding on the country.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fourthly, Significance: <\/strong>It is the first legally-binding instrument that creates a comprehensive legal framework and approach to combat violence against women.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fifthly, Members of the Istanbul Convention<\/strong>: As of March 2019, 45 countries and the European Union have signed the convention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>About Council of Europe:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Firstly, Council of Europe<\/strong> is an international organisation. It aims to uphold human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in Europe.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Secondly, <\/strong>the council was <strong>founded in 1949<\/strong>. It has 47 member states. In that, 27 members are the members of the European Union(EU).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thirdly, Relation with EU: <\/strong>The organisation is distinct from the European Union (EU).
