(&gt;60 billion)<\/li>\n<li>Big firms like Google, Facebook, Walmart, Samsung, Foxconn, and Silver Lake made FDI contributions in India.<\/li>\n<li>However, India\u2019s latest FDI totals still lag behind other market economies such as China, and Brazil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Why India still lags behind China and Brazil in attracting FDI?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Even after three decades of liberalization (1991), India remains a complex and challenging place to do business because:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>One, frequent shifts in the policy landscape. For example, <strong>Retrospective taxation<\/strong>. India lost the Vodafone case and cairn energy case at the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/permanent-court-of-arbitration-pca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Permanent<strong> Court of Arbitration<\/strong>.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Two, persistent market access barriers. For example, anti-dumping duty, negative list, mandatory localized procurement, etc.,<\/li>\n<li>Three, the government\u2019s push towards \u201cself-reliant\u201d India also created distrust among the investors.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><strong>Then, why multinational companies are investing in India?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First, <\/strong>India\u2019s huge market with growing purchasing power makes India an attractive destination for investments. <strong>For example<\/strong>, India has a market of 1.4 billion people and a rising middle class of 600 million.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Second, <\/strong>shift in contemporary geopolitics due to rising U.S.-China competition. It has forced multinationals to reimagine their supply chain and production hubs. For example, Samsung has invested billions in the Indian market.\n<ul>\n<li>Additionally, manufacturers such as Cisco, Nokia, Ericsson, and Flex are planning to invest in India to take advantage of India\u2019s incentives in the manufacturing sector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Third, the <\/strong>rise of the \u2018next-gen netizens\u2019 is one of the key reasons why leading global tech companies are investing in India. For example, India has 700 million Internet users.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fourth<\/strong>, a showcase of India\u2019s resilience during adversities. For example, India has managed the pandemic better than many of its western peers and restored economic activity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>What is the way forward?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Increasing FDI investment should not result in a drain of wealth from India. MNC\u2019s should be made to demonstrate their commitment towards India.
