Both these rivers are tributaries of the river Yamuna.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"n3VNCb aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Rajni-Jain-4\/publication\/346937359\/figure\/fig1\/AS%3A967445288349696%401607668339110\/Bundelkhand-region-comprises-13-districts-covering-states-Uttar-Pradesh-and-Madhya.png?resize=462%2C286&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Bundelkhand region comprises 13 districts covering states Uttar Pradesh\" width=\"462\" height=\"286\" data-noaft=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This project will spread across the districts of MP and UP i.e. Tikamgarh, Panna and Chhatarpur districts of MP and in UP; Jhansi, Banda, Lalitpur and Mahoba districts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-97572 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ke-betwa.png?resize=545%2C442&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ke-betwa.png?w=545&amp;ssl=1 545w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ke-betwa.png?resize=300%2C243&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Source:<\/strong> Indian Express<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phases under the Project: <\/strong>The Ken-Betwa Link Project has two phases.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Under Phase-I,<\/strong>\u00a0 Daudhan dam complex and Ken-Betwa link canal and Powerhouses \u2014 will be completed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Under Phase-II,<\/strong> three components \u2014 Lower Orr dam, Bina complex project, and Kotha barrage \u2014 will be constructed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Benefits of the Ken-Betwa Project:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The project will be of immense benefit to the water-starved region of Bundelkhand spread across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.<\/li>\n<li>It will <strong>boost irrigation and provide drinking water supply<\/strong> to 62 lakh people. It&#8217;ll also generate 103 MW of <strong>hydropower<\/strong> and 27 MW of <strong>solar power.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is also expected to <strong>boost socio-economic prosperity<\/strong> in the backward Bundelkhand region on account of increased agricultural activities and employment generation. It would also help in arresting distress migration from this region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Concerns:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Biodiversity Concerns: <\/strong>The project might affect the Panna Tiger Reserve. Out of the 6,017 ha of forest area coming under the Daudhan dam of Ken Betwa Link Project, 4,206 ha of the area lies within the core tiger habitat of Panna Tiger Reserve.<\/li>\n<li>The Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh also could not agree on how water would be shared, particularly in the non-monsoonal months. They reached an agreement in March 2021.<\/li>\n<li>Moreover, the <strong>claims of Ken having surplus water may be unrealistic<\/strong> as the river is not perennial as in the past sometimes, it has slowed to a trickle.<\/li>\n<li>Another difficulty will be that the <strong>Ken flows 60-70 feet lower than the Betwa<\/strong> and at least 30% of the 103 MW power generated will be used for pumping the water up.<\/li>\n<li>A challenge to the environmental clearance given to the Ken-Betwa project is pending before the National Green Tribunal.<\/li>\n<li>Further, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/eia\/\">environmental impact assessment<\/a><\/strong> of the project, based on which the project was given environmental clearance in 2017, has been tagged as inadequate with factual errors by a number of official agencies, including the Forest Advisory Committee within the environment ministry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>About National River Linking Project(NRLP):<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>National River Linking Project (NRLP)<\/strong> also known as the <strong>National Perspective Plan<\/strong> aims to link Indian rivers by a network of reservoirs and canals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objective: <\/strong>The main objective is to transfer water from water \u2018surplus\u2019 basins suffering from floods to water \u2018deficit\u2019 basins suffering from drought\/scarcity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prepared by: <\/strong>The then Ministry of Irrigation prepared this plan in August 1980.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Managed by: <\/strong>The NRLP is managed by National Water Development Agency (NWDA) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Components: <\/strong>The plan proposes 30 river links to connect 37 rivers across India under two components:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Himalayan Rivers Development Component: <\/strong>Under this, 14 river links have been identified.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Peninsular Rivers Development Component or the Southern Water Grid: <\/strong>It includes 16 river links.
