The Chief Election Commissioner has proposed to include the \u2018remote voting facility\u2019 in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This will enable voters to cast votes from remote locations and improve voter turnout. However, the success of this method depends on various other steps including the creation of enabling infrastructure for remote voting. In this article, we will explain the remote voting facility and its challenges in India.<\/span><\/p>\n

Current Scenario<\/b><\/h5>\n
    \n
  • Firstly, the first pilot project of the remote voting facility is likely to start in the next 2-3 months.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Then, a team of experts from IIT Madras and other IITs is working on drafting the modalities of \u2018remote voting\u2019 or \u2018blockchain\u2019 voting system in full swing.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Other projects in pipeline:<\/span>\n
      \n
    • Introduction of E-Voting for NRI(Non-Resident Indians) in the next 6-12 months.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Linking of Aadhaar card with EPIC (Electoral Photo Identity Card). This will improve voter identification at polling stations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      About Remote Voting Facility (RVF):<\/b><\/h5>\n

      • It will enable a voter to cast his or her vote from any polling station in the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      • It will remove the compulsion on voting only at the domicile polling station. (As the voter is registered in his domicile).<\/span><\/li>\n
      • The project is being developed by the IIT-Madras using <\/span>blockchain technology<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        Blockchain Technology<\/b>:<\/span><\/h5>\n

        1. A blockchain is a distributed ledger of information which is replicated across various nodes on a \u201cpeer-to-peer\u201d network (P2P Network)<\/li>\n
        2. The data exists on multiple computers at the same time. It constantly grows as new sets of recordings or blocks get added to it in a decentralization manner.<\/li>\n
        3. All transactions that occur on a standard Blockchain are <\/span>verified and signed with cryptography<\/b> to ensure <\/span>security and anonymity.<\/b>\n
