{"id":97869,"date":"2021-03-27T10:08:01","date_gmt":"2021-03-27T04:38:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=97869"},"modified":"2021-03-27T12:57:59","modified_gmt":"2021-03-27T07:27:59","slug":"indias-stand-on-human-rights-violation-in-sri-lanka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indias-stand-on-human-rights-violation-in-sri-lanka\/","title":{"rendered":"India&#8217;s stand on Human Rights violation in Sri Lanka"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Synopsis: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India maintained balance between the diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka and its support to Tamil minority people in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Introduction\u00a0<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The previous government in Sri Lanka had made some <b>commitments to the UNHRC<\/b>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The commitments include constructive engagement with the international community on the Human Rights violation in Sri Lanka. Further, the government also committed to provide a consensual resolution to the problem of the Tamil people. But the <strong>current government of Sri Lanka withdrew from the commitments<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, the 46th session of the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/us-decides-to-rejoin-un-human-rights-council-unhrc\/\">United Nations Human Rights Council(UNHRC)<\/a> adopted a resolution titled \u201cPromoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, <\/span>India abstains from the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-abstains-in-the-unhrc-resolution-against-sri-lanka\/\">UNHRC resolution against Sri Lanka<\/a>. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is done to indicate the following things.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India attempted to preserve its diplomatic space. Further, India wants to contain persistent Chinese influence in Sri Lanka. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, India is also maintaining its support for the Tamil minority to achieve equality, justice, dignity and peace.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><strong>The Present Status of the <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Human Rights violation<\/strong> <\/span>in Sri Lanka:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><b>The UN High Commissioner\u2019s report<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has raised certain concerns on the following issues in Sri Lanka. They are,\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing militarization in Sri Lanka<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intensified surveillance against rights defenders and NGOs, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interference with trials in certain symbolic cases from the past <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dangerous anti-minority rhetoric among other sections of people.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><b>What has been India\u2019s stance <\/b><strong>on the Human Rights violation?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has never supported externally mandated investigative mechanisms. India voted in favour of a <strong>credible investigation into human rights violation<\/strong> in 2012. But India mentioned the importance of Sri Lanka\u2019s acceptance to solve the human rights dispute.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>India has emphasised meaningful decentralization<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to meet Tamil aspirations. Also, India demanded the unity and integrity of Sri Lanka.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>India\u2019s concerns in Sri Lanka have been different<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the rest of the international community. India is well-informed by a sense of the long-term well-being of the Tamils. Hence, India <strong>stresses devolution<\/strong> rather than accountability.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>India has its own limitations in expressing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disappointment over Sri Lanka\u2019s stand on Human Rights violation. Reasons such as the Chinese presence in the Sri Lankan region can be one of them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India did not change its position on tactical neutrality on the Human rights violation in Sri Lanka. When practicality and principle needed an equal measure, the Centre has chosen non-participation as an easy way out.
