{"id":98728,"date":"2021-03-30T07:21:48","date_gmt":"2021-03-30T01:51:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=98728"},"modified":"2021-04-28T07:24:22","modified_gmt":"2021-04-28T01:54:22","slug":"india-bangladesh-relations-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-bangladesh-relations-3\/","title":{"rendered":"India-Bangladesh relations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source- <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/opinion\/columns\/narendra-modi-bangladesh-visit-meets-sheikh-hasina-foreign-policy-7249647\/\">Indian Express<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Syllabus- GS 2- \u00a0<\/strong>India and its neighbourhood- relations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Synopsis &#8211;<\/strong> This article signifies the importance of the Indian Prime Minister&#8217;s recent visit to Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Indian Prime Minister visits Bangladesh to commemorate two significant events: the country&#8217;s 50th anniversary of independence and Mujibur Rehman&#8217;s 100th birthday.<\/li>\n<li>The other events are the celebration of 50 years of Bangladesh Liberation and the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh.<\/li>\n<li>Despite the remarkable progress, the water sharing issue\u00a0looms large.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Issues not discussed-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Water-related issue- <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Teesta water sharing issues remain unattended.<\/strong> India and Bangladesh have been engaged in a long-standing dispute over water-sharing in\u00a0the Teesta.<\/li>\n<li>Lack of movement with regard to Feni, Kushiyara.<\/li>\n<li>In 2015, the Indian Prime Minister\u2019s visit to Dhaka generated expectations to take forward the issue however, it still remains unresolved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Border Management and illegal migration-<\/li>\n<li>Furore over implementation of the National Register of Citizens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Positive aspect of the meeting- <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sub-regional connectivity-<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Bangladesh requested India for additional road connectivity\u00a0link to\u00a0Nepal\u00a0and\u00a0rail\u00a0links to\u00a0Bhutan\u00a0via Indian Territory.<\/li>\n<li>Bangladesh\u00a0also wants to join the\u00a0India-Myanmar-Thailand\u00a0(IMT) trilateral\u00a0highway.<\/li>\n<li>Bangladesh offered the use of Chattogram, Sylhet and Saidpur Airport, by the people of North East India, especially of Tripura.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Strengthening sub-regional cooperation in power and energy connectivity.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>India is focusing on enhancing investments and creating capacity as well as power infrastructure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Way forward- <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>According to a World Bank report, if there is free trade and liberal connectivity, trade would expand exponentially, resulting in an increase in GDP for both India and Bangladesh.\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s promising to see that the two countries are working toward a CEP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>There should be efforts to resolve pending issues concerning\u00a0sharing of waters from both countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source- Indian Express Syllabus- GS 2- \u00a0India and its neighbourhood- relations.
