{"id":98817,"date":"2021-03-31T17:07:36","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T11:37:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=98817"},"modified":"2021-03-31T21:27:16","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T15:57:16","slug":"us-2020-human-rights-report-flags-curbs-on-indian-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/us-2020-human-rights-report-flags-curbs-on-indian-media\/","title":{"rendered":"US &#8220;2020 Human Rights Report&#8221; flags curbs on Indian media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the News?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The US State Department released the \u201c2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/answered-what-are-human-rights-how-far-do-you-think-the-nhrc-has-been-able-to-fulfill-its-mandate-in-preserving-these-rights\/\">Human Rights <\/a>Report\u201d also known as \u201c2020 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices\u201d.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>About 2020 Human Rights Report:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Firstly, the Human Rights Report is an annual report.\u00a0 Each year the US State Department submits it to the US Congress.<\/li>\n<li>Secondly, the report is retrospective and contains a country-wise discussion on the state of human rights.<\/li>\n<li>Thirdly, the report is based on the rights listed under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Key Findings of the Human Right report Related to India:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Human Rights Issues in India:<\/strong> India has several human rights issues including:\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Unlawful<\/strong> and arbitrary killings;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Restrictions<\/strong> <strong>on freedom <\/strong>of expression and the press including violence, threats of violence, or unjustified arrests or prosecutions against journalists;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Restrictions<\/strong> on political participation;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Widespread corruption<\/strong> at all levels in the government;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tolerance of violations <\/strong>of religious freedom<\/li>\n<li><strong>Crimes involving violence <\/strong>and discrimination targeting members of minority groups including women based on religious affiliation or social status.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Requests for Data from Social Media Companies: <\/strong>The government\u2019s requests for user data from Internet companies increased dramatically. In 2019, the Government made 49,382 user data requests from Facebook, a 32% increase from 2018. Over the same period, Google requests increased by 69% while Twitter requests saw a 68% increase.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Improvement in Situation in J&amp;K: <\/strong>The report noted that there was an improvement in the human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
