@DramaticAdmiral some of the bigger matches are too good to pass up. Even if I don’t watch them fully I generally have a live stream on by my side.
Now I’m trying to cut down and might stop watching altogether till the prelims. (Or that’s what I’d like to tell myself)

@AzadHindFauz that’s ancient history :P
I started my foray in football with Chelsea, only because one of my good friends liked them. Slowly got more and more into football, went out to buy a Chelsea jersey, wasn’t available, Arsenal’s was. That started my love-hate relationship with the club.
Although I stuck with Chelsea till the night they won the CL. Then started watching Arsenal and fell in love with Wengerball.
Arsenal is still my go to club but the club just doesn’t have the same excitement to it. Earlier even in defeat Arsenal played some breathtaking football. Now it’s just:
-Play well in the start
-Score/Get close to scoring
-Make an error and concede
-Try to breakdown the team
-Get hit on counters
-Bring on Willian
-Pain

Does anyone play FPL?
4.3k views
@DramaticAdmiral I would instead argue that it makes football more interesting. Since I’ve started FPL, I’ve developed interest in teams I wouldn’t normally have given two hoots about.
Though I agree it tends to take a lot of time, plus when you’ve given a test, not performed well and simultaneously your captain blanks, it’s very depressing XD

@AzadHindFauz He took off Partey last game to protect him for the Spurs tie. Elneny definitely won’t be starting.
Arteta prefers Willian against low block team generally, Tottenham are a pretty defensive side so I feel Willian will definitely start.
The squad will be the same as against Olympiakos.

@DramaticAdmiral I’d love to see that happen. I absolutely despise Mourinho and Spuds

Leicester win the FA Cup :D

There’s quite a few lessons in there for us plebs if we choose to learn from them :P

@dwightschrute I have a hunch Brentford might surprise and have a good stint in the PL. Additionally, don’t overlook how poor Wolves were, especially in the back end of the season, now with Nuno gone they might see their pack go down. Crystal Palace are another team on the downward spiral, an ageing squad and a new manager, even Lampard chose to steer away.
Somehow now I just can’t see Newcastle go down. Despite them not being a great team they’re still able to grind out results.

So as of now before any transfer business I’d say Crystal Palace, Wolves and Norwich

@dwightschrute I’d hate to see Chelsea winning because of the sheer absurdity of it and the fact that it would have happened twice. In such bad shape when Lampard left them, strikers still not firing and if they still win it then it’ll be all on Tuchel’s genius.

It’d nice to see an Aguero farewell with a CL trophy and heavenly if they win it courtesy another stoppage time Agueerrroooooooo

@SergioRamos mate Pep bottled it with the lineup. When I saw the team sheet the first thought was: who’s going to protect that back 4. Pep was too adventurous with such an attacking lineup, definitely hasn’t learnt his lessons when he’s done the same thing in earlier knockout games, experimenting at this stage.

Chelsea were perfect tonight, Kante is a baller and Tuchel is a superb conductor, got the team to play with absolute perfection like his orchestra.

@DramaticAdmiral there’s no gyaan to be given here, these were just my thoughts, how can I possibly know better? Even then I can criticise his formation because this wasn’t his best 11 that was winning him games. The DM point wasn’t even a post game conclusion.
With how City play, one of their fullbacks nearly always either stays in midfield or pushed up on one wing, they needed some stability. He risked it having no DM which just allowed easy Chelsea counterattacks. You don’t just change your best 11 for a final and then expect not to be criticised.
Tuchel went with his set and forget best 11. He didn’t overthink if Pulisic’s pace would be better on the counter instead of Havertz or if he needed Kovacic to break down their possession instead of Jorginho. Pep gets criticised because he overthinks. He did it in the Lyon game, he did it in this final again.
He still hasn’t won a CL without Messi.

The Kane point is moot because then you’re not separating genuine criticism from outrage.

@SergioRamos I completely agree that he got outwitted in every dimension. My DM fear was just that if City concede first, which they did, they wouldn’t be able to break down Chelsea. They don’t have a proper striker, everyone knows Kante wouldn’t let Foden or KdB have the ball in the middle, Chelsea defend with 2 on the flank so nearly zero chance for any overlapping runs from City’s wingers. I’d still say that with more defensive stability, City would have had more chance at winning because then you’re also not letting Chelsea score. Pep’s whole game plan relied on them getting the first goal and it failed.
Pehle people used to say he can’t win a CL without Messi and I just laughed it out but now after seeing his teams bottle it again and again despite him signing the best players that he wants, I just consider other managers to be tactically better because they’re doing it with fewer resources.

On paper England possibly have the best squad. Just feels like the right mixture of experience and youthful adventure. The bigger matchups are most likely going to be drab games devoid of goals and like the final last time, feels like it would be a competition of the best defences.

France look strong, Belgium on paper but an out of form Hazard, an injured and cautious KdB and an old, creaky defence with an uninspiring Martinez look like disappointment again, Germany still look lost in the wild and have a very tough group. Portugal are an even better team than last time so a safe bet would be them. They just don’t like conceding, a lot of players are returning from successful domestic seasons so they’re the favourites for me.

As much as I’d like, England cannot afford to play Grealish, Foden, Mount, Sterling, Sancho, Kane, Rashford all together. It’s either Mount or Grealish, Foden or Sancho. Till a few months ago, I was of the opinion that Southgate is a stupid manager for choosing Mount over Grealish but I differ now. Most of the teams play a low block against England, Grealish wouldn’t be too effective. Also, are we forgetting that even the currently benched players have been given ample chances to see if that makes their attack click. Unfortunately, what sounds good on paper doesn’t always work in real life.

People saying Rice and Mount aren’t elite level and then count Pogba among the elites, idk what football y’all are even watching. Kante plays a different role to Rice, Gini’s role is different. Comparing unrelated players isn’t right here.

Rice and Phillips make a solid defensive partnership. England need that.

That all being said, even I’d like a little more adventurism from Southgate. He’s got the chance to do it tonight.

Portugal’s defence has greatly disappointed even with 2 DMs. Semedo drew way too much flak for what was essentially a tactical problem he couldn’t have done anything about.

And while we’re criticising, France? What role does Rabiot even have? Is he a ball winner? Is he there for ball progression? I absolutely don’t understand why he’s getting game time in a team dripping with talent. France is the one underperforming in my opinion. Have a better striker than Giroud in Karim, a firing Mbappe, an always awesome Kante and a pretty stable defence.

Italy would be the favourites at this point. A rock solid defence, such a free flowing attack. They’ve got a good mix of young talent and experience plus superb chemistry.

Germany too look hungry and determined again.

I’m also loving how Czech Rep are playing. I personally want them to do really well after reading a lot about how the players are racists, the nation is too and what not.

Also, the intensity of the Azzurris during their national anthem!

@SergioRamos Portugal! Belgium are the Tottenham of national teams. I predict it would be a low scoring game. Plus my brother absolutely loves Ronaldo and I wouldn’t want to see him sad. He bawled his eyes out when Ronaldo left Madrid XD

What a crazy day of football. 14 goals in 2 games!

Take a bow Xhaka man, I absolutely love you! Rock solid (get it?)!!

Bringing on Emre Can when you desperately need a goal is peak Löw. At least that’s what the unforgiving internet believes.

I for one don’t think Germany were that bad. They did create better chances in the 1st half and had that Muller chance been converted it might be a different story altogether. In the end it was their most suspect position that let them down, their central defence.

I do hate how Southgate plays so defensively and still churns out results. I mean, he gets the job done but give me my dose of fast, breathtaking attacking plays dammit!

The football fan inside me has been absolutely spoiled with what happened yesterday :|

@MikeWozniak Spinazzola & Maehle have been great. The most in demand breakout player is surely going to be Patrick Schick, he’s having an absolutely mental tournament so far. Almost definitely going to get goal of the tournament too.

Conversely, who do you think had/ is having a stinker of a tournament?

Ruben Dias for me. After being praised so much throughout the season AND winning player of the season, he was absolutely rinsed by Germany. In the rest of the games too he looked very suspect and I only saw Pepe doing most of the defensive work.

In attack, Mbappe is the obvious name that comes to mind.

Kind of poetic that in the worst finals performance of Messi, Argentina finally win a trophy!

La Pulga gets the elusive!

Neymar had a great game, let down by his teammates in the end.

On a side note, saw a few Sinovac ads and couldn’t help but associate some conspiracy in the whole Covaxin deal suspension in Brazil

@balwintejas strangely enough, wages are also a part of finances.

Ronaldo himself is on 25 million a year. Varane, Sancho and Ronaldo is a million a week, nearly 50 million per year. Messi, Donnarumma, Ramos all are definitely on very high wages. City’s squad itself is 1 Billion plus and they added a single 100 million player.

Not sure Arsenal should be the ones being trolled here when you can see other clubs literally buying trophies.

Does anyone else feel Arsenal are driven a lot by emotions and mentality instead of the quality of the players?

Certainly you need to have a minimum requisite ability, but after that on different match days the team performs starkly different not because of the players or the tactical setup but their mentality.

A decently good squad against Nottingham, poor gameplay because the players didn’t seem up to it. A depleted squad against Liverpool 4 days later, went down to 10 men and churned out an exceptional performance. Same story against City, despite not having anywhere the same level of excellence they gave City a run for their money.

Tottenham game, at home, important match, churned out a great 1st half display. United game, very important, hadn’t won at Old Trafford since several years, United in a poor form, recently sacked their manager, went 1-0 up with a near fluke and then eventually lost. For most of the game it felt like Arsenal didn’t believe in themselves, I believe a win at OT wasn’t out of the reach if only they weren’t scared(?).

Everton game, possibly the worst performance in the league this season. A very winnable game lost due to mental complacency.

A lot of the Arsenal players are just not right in the head. There seems to be a clear void of leadership. I like Xhaka but he’s not going to become captain anytime soon, plus he’s a very polarising figure so maybe it won’t happen again at all. Apart from him, mentally strong individuals are in short supply here at Arsenal.

At one time I was growing in confidence about a top 4 finish but recent results and developments have ended that optimism. Nothing short of a near miracle can ensure a ‘good’ transfer window. Haven’t plugged the midfield gap, still don’t have a striker, don’t have a decent backup for Tomi.

The Vlahovic saga was pretty embarrassing and now unless Edu does a deadline day Wenger, Arsenal would definitely miss top 4, an omission of their own making entirely.

@KingSlayer23 I disagree on Arteta. Sure he isn’t a Guardiola, Klopp or Conte but he certainly isn’t in the league of OGS (can’t say much about Lampard, haven’t watched his teams enough)
Arteta certainly has tactical nous and his style is distinctly visible in the team now. OGS wasn’t ever tactically excellent and he also lacked the requisite coaching competence (as corroborated by sources inside the club)
Right now it’s more of if the club can support the manager with signings he wants because he’s the first manager in the last 5-6 years at Arsenal who’s atleast given a good competition to top clubs.

@KingSlayer23 I thought United fans would be quite familiar with his ‘quality’ :P

Lukaku was always hyped to be in the league of top strikers. I don’t think he is at that level or if he would ever get to that level. A striker who demands a very specific playing style can’t ever be one of the best. Benzema has versatility, Lewa has versatility, Lukaku can’t even get his first touch right. He’s majorly a bully striker who isn’t even clinical.
Chelsea’s striker woes seem to be never ending, not that I’m complaining :P

Look, OGS did a lot of good despite the shortcomings of the coaching staff, the team Mourinho left behind had become highly dysfunctional and the way he revived the team last season in Prem was commendable (especially after the abysmal start and that 1-6 hammering). Everyone is entitled to their opinion so I can't say you are wrong but I don't think one can reach the final of the Europa league or score 9 goals in one PL game or defeat Guardiola 3 times a season, etc, etc. without distinct tactical clarity. He had a playing style but he didn't have the cutting edge coaching ability to win trophies.

Personally, I would not mind if Arsenal continues with Arteta for several years :P

Mate I don’t think you got what I’m saying. I mean OGS isn’t tactically ‘excellent’. He definitely knows his stuff which helps in getting the results you’ve mentioned. But at the same time he also oversaw some pretty pathetic games. Sometimes it’s weird seeing so many United fans defend OGS despite him clearly not being enough. I’m not even talking about things from a results perspective. If you look at results, Arteta due to his 8th place finishes shouldn’t have a job. I tend to view things in context, so even if Emery had better or similar results compared to Arteta, with him the team wasn’t on any well defined path.

OGS always gave me some Wenger vibes. On days the players clicked, they produced some excellent free flowing football. However with how modern day football is, Wenger wasn’t able to replicate his earlier success and couldn’t sustain his brand of football since it requires the young hunger, innocence etc in the players. Idk if this makes any sense but in OGS and Wenger, I see an attitude of keeping football a ‘beautiful game’ instead of the tactical intricacy it has become nowadays.

United under Ole had a well established squad and I believe he should have delivered much better results. If I remember correctly, he did oversee that game against PSG. Compared to that game, in 2021 his squad didn’t have a visible identity, it was the same overall. As much as I hate United, they didn’t progress under OGS. With Arteta, despite what a lot of people think, there’s a stark change in how Arsenal played in the win against City (2020, FA cup) and the loss against City recently. Despite losing, they actually took the game to City and dominated for a lot of the game. Arsenal currently have the youngest squad in the league, there are serious depth and positional problems and despite this, he’s got the team playing some structured football again.

Ultimately football is a business and it’s the fine margins that will decide the future of managers so I’m not too attached. You may feel my opinion about OGS and Arteta is wrong but it’s not just my own belief. I trust the word of people who’ve been in this game for years when they say how tactically adept someone is. I watch almost all United and Arsenal games, even when exams are near :P plus I try to be as free from bias as I can be.

I’ll judge Arteta when he has a complete squad at his disposal which will definitely take another summer transfer window. On the same note, I hope Rangnick doesn’t move upstairs and continues his manager role at United :P

4.5k views

On a lighter note, I feel that the transfer window is the most entertaining period in football. For reference, someone spotted a Rolls Royce with a number plate reading ‘15 AAK’, which looks like IsaaK, so Arsenal fans are now convinced it’s Isak because the car was recently registered and his agent is apparently in London too. The fans managed to crash the vehicle registration website and are now scouring Instagram stories of his teammates to look for any transfer clues XD

It’s peak silly season and I absolutely love this!

@Arsene ever since I made my last comments I made a case to watch every Arsenal game (given that everyone was so confident about growth under Arteta) and I can't disagree any longer that tactically he has done something really positive with this squad....transfers too now appear to be inch-perfect (read Ramsdale and Odegaard) so yeah barring injuries I feel Arsenal are set to take top 4 spot, they even have a well-spaced fixture to allow good recovery periods.
United actually lost onto top 4 hopes after the Burnley draw only and then Watford draw and City loss have more or less sealed their chances...they squandered all the points in easier fixtures long before the testing ones began...there is no hope now

The growth is there but the oncoming fixtures aren’t kind. Arsenal enjoyed a good fixture list in the recent past but now in the crucial period of the season very difficult fixtures are piling up.

Though I’m hopeful, I’m still preparing for disappointment. Liverpool tonigh, Villa on Saturday. Also play Chelsea in a future midweek and then play United on the following Saturday. Still have the London derby to contend with :/

However, if Arsenal prevent a loss today, that would be a proper step up. That being said I’m still very happy with how squad is playing right now and also impressed by their mentality. This team looks like a proper professional no bullshit team. Might not have the best players, but have an amazing team which I’m very proud of :D
