• Rajasthan govt. opens mother’s milk bank – The govt owned human milk bank, “Jeevan Dhara”, will collect excess breast milk from lactating mothers and provide it to infants deprived of it. This would bring down infant morality rate, govt hopes.

• All trains to have bio-toilets in 5 years – Anaerobic bacteria – developed by DRDO  – converts human waste into water and gas which is released through outlets.

• Blow to anti-tobacco campaign – Govt has decided to put on hold its decision to increase pictorial warnings on tobacco products to 85 per cent.  Studies show that heavy use of chewing tobacco is associated with high prevalence of oral cancer in India.

International

• Maritime Silk Road to reset Beijing-Colombo ties – China and Sri Lanka wants to evolve a new relationship defined by the Maritime Silk Road  and avoid a clash with India

• Sri Lanka likely to have access to Asian infrastructure bank – China has hinted that it will provide Sri Lanka access to the $40 billion Silk Road Fund and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

• An embarrassing stance – India voted in the UN in favour of a Russian resolution limiting benefits to same-sex couples. Globally, India is now in the minority, because  only 76 countries  criminalise same-sex relationships.
