In simple words. Consider your eyes – whatever you can see, is in your line of sight. Similarly, whatever is in the direct sight of anything, comes in it’s light of sight.
In WiFi, you don’t need to place your phone in line-of-sight of router; similarly in Bluetooth and NFC.
Whereas, in TV remotes, you need to point the remote to TV receiver in order to operate it – so it’s in line-of-sight. (Similarly in reading BarCode and QR-Code) -

It’s in phone generally. Was in OnePlus 1, Nexus 6P etc. Can be in PoS too.
So bring two phones nearby, and transmit data. Used for payment services too – like in Google Wallet and Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. -
