u r correct dost…blunder ho gya tha… yellow stone park, USA ko hot spring se link kr diya tha…
No, Geysers are rare ,very rare.
hot springs are very common…….If you have visited Kund in haryana ,you’ll see hot springs there………
rememer Geysers are very rare and Comes with Explosion.
Hot springs are very common and due to suplhur content in that, its good for curing skin problems. I know because i have gone to Hot spings in Aravalli mountains quite often….
Yellow stone Geysers in USA is biggest in world.
I don’t know about you, but I do think that Sun is an indirect agent of denudation not a direct one (In which case, Sunlight is: causing exfoliation).
You might be half right but if we think about it, stresses and pressures (in this case either by repeated temperature changes or repeated wetting and drying) are maximum near the surface of any rock. In both the cases, the result will be similar at least on the areas near the surface which is the onion peeling effect or what is also known as exfoliation. I remember this was also mentioned in GC Leong which mentioned exfoliation in the both the conditions mentioned above.
ForumIAS,adding explanation to the question will make this initiative less time consuming and more worth.
Please look into the same .
paragraph-2 ka last 2 line padho… ans is correct, exfoliation may occur due to alternate of wetting and drying of rock surface..
option 1 & 2 are correct.. 3rd is wrong as geyser are more common than hot spring…

Thanks for attempting the Quiz
Need to go back to basics :'(
How sun, a factor for denudation? Can anyone explain, pls
Maybe because Geysers are explosive and too hot to be used for medicinal purposes? Idk very vague question. I marked 2 and got wrong 😐
3/5 this time.
No actually it cannot as freezing does not form layers but instead crack open the rock from inside. The kind of stresses required for exfoliation is not consistent with freezing action,
Freezing action causes Wedging and Fracturing, not Exfoliation,
Yes, but it also goes on to say that freezing induced stress can cause the same. So other option should also be true. I take the point, the question asks the cause. Multiple options seem to be correct here.
Geysers do. The statements 1 and 2 state the converse. Geysers throw up steam with explosions due to constraints while hot springs have a free flowing convection cycle and is more common than geysers. As for medicinal value, hot springs are said to contain dissolved minerals due to unsaturation of higher temperature of water. But same logic should apply to geyser as it is also contains heated water…no idea why it does not have the said property. Maybe because of its covered surface..
The link explains clearly that it does lead to layered removal in the same way as sun’s heat does. Here water causes clay formation. Clay expands when wet and contracts when dry. This causes similar effect to the more familiar Sun caused exfoliation.
Thanks for the article. My point was that exfoliation is removal of rocks in form of sheets/layers whatever maybe the causal agent. Hence the question is still incorrect. It is not specifically wet-and-dry cycle or rocks..the emphasis is on layered removal.
Someone explain me the Hot Spring wala question. Statement 2 is definitely correct, Geysers do uplift minerals while passing through rock boundaries in the vertical ascent.
Yes I’m sure its a wrong answer. Water has nothing to do with exfoliation
Yes, I feel the same.
But how is exfoliation related to wetting or drying? It is heat induced process in arid regions.
I am 100% sure this is wrong.
Exfoliation answer should be none of these? It refers to peeling of the rock in layers, and not alternate wet and dry cycles of weathering. Please confirm. @ForumIAS
I am nobody to decide if Ncerts are enough or not my friend 🙂 All i can tell you is that Gc Leong is a wonderful book and if you have time, do go through it.
However, these concepts can be found in Ncerts too, but in this case, they have been lifted from GC Leong verbatim. ATB 🙂
Ncerts are not enough..??

All the questions are directly from Goh Cheng Leong, first 5 chapters. I’m studying it at the moment.
Thanks Bhavika,
The information is of great use.

The abyssal zone or abyssopelagic is a layer of the pelagic zone of the ocean. “Abyss” derives from the Greek word ἄβυσσος, meaning bottomless. At depths of 4,000 to 6,000 metres (13,123 to 19,685 feet), this zone remains in perpetual darkness and never receives daylight
