    On Wikipedia it says that, {” Currently, there are two hypotheses that attempt to explain their (hotspots) origin. One suggests that hotspots are due to mantle plumes that rise as thermal diapirs from the core–mantle boundary. The other hypothesis is that lithospheric extension permits the passive rising of melt from shallow depths.”}

Two hypothesies – mainly for the provenance (source) of magma, i.e core-mantle boundary (upper mantle derived) shallow source magma and deeper mantle magma for hotspots.

For deeper source there is no controversy.

For shallow source like that of Yellowstone, Lithospheric extension model is proposed. This extension is of localized origin unlike MORs. The pre-existing upper-mantle derived magma is erupted due to release in pressure due to extension of lithosphere.

Now, The mechanism of this extension is contested. Dr. Gillian Foulger (who is the foremost proponent of this concept), claims that it is related to plate movements, mimicking MOR on a smaller scale.

But other Geoscientists claim that it is due to localized straining associated with faulting (as in Basin and range province of US), and not because of localized convection of magma as Dr. Foulger suggests.

Therefore Dr. Foulger associates hotspots with localized ”plate movements” due to localized convection of shallow magma chamber. i.e., mimicking MOR on a smaller scale and hence hotspots (atleast those of shallow source origin) are considered to be originated from Divergent boundaries (if at all you can call it a divergent boundary). Hence it is CONTESTED.

But she has few supporters in the fraternity. Because similar settings elsewhere in the world like Mt. Tibesti donot show such mechanism and Yellowstone is a unique case.

    Hope this helps Lordy !

Accepted. I studied Divergent Boundaries again, and found out divergence causes basaltic magma flow which cannot build mountains.

But on Wikipedia it says Hotspot Volcanism is contested. So I don’t understand..what is it?

Kaunsi hai woh ridge Lordy bhai? It is on the emperor chain of seamounts where u’ll find Hawaii, and not any ridge. This chain is not created by MOR activity as Paleomagnetic data doesnot support MOR activity.

Hotspots are not contested. They are accepted by IUGS (International Union of Geological Sciences). It is the body that facilitates Intl. cooperation in Earth Sciences. Similar to IUPAC for chemistry.

And if Hawaii is on MOR then evidences like alternate bands of reverse and normal magnetic polarities on Oceanic crust (Paleomagnetism) should have been documented. But nothing of that sort has been observed. Infact lack of such evidence forced Geologists to think of another mechanism of formation of Volcanoes like Hawaii, Reunion, Kergeulen. And they concluded on Hotspot volcanism.

Lordy Bhai bahut saal Geology padhne mein guzaare. Aise mat bolo yaar. Aise Qs pe main bhi Khushfaimiyaan rakhta tha exams ke baad. Kuch kaam nahi aati. dil zaroor bahal jata hai magar, neend nahi aati.

Hawaii is a seamount chain on a Mid-Oceanic Ridge. Therefore it is an example of Divergence created Volcano.

The idea of Hotspots is still contested. Many link it to Divergent Boundaries, others consider mantle plumes to be the cause. Either ways, Hawaii can be considered a Divergence Volcano.

Thanx Lordy!!! 🙂 but the Q says which type of plate convergence zone will generate most volcanoes, so technically it doesn’t matter whether incidences of O-O are lesser/greater than O-C. What matters is the ease of magma finding its way out, which is easier in O-O setting than O-C.

The Q nowhere mentions ”documented”. But yes in the exam I wud assume that to be the case. Also Lordy! Hawaiian volcanoes are not O-O divergence volcanoes. They are hotspot volcanoes like Tristan da cunha and Azores.

    Simple explanation for you Ali,
O-O boundaries are generally in divergence. Therefore incidences of O-O convergence are much lesser than O-C convergence.

Q also asks about the most number of documented volcanoes. It does not take into account Divergence created volcanoes (like Hawaii). I think the answer is perfectly justified.

So, if dust particles will not be there, sky will not appear to be blue ?

  85. Tyndall and Rayleigh thought that the blue colour of the sky must be due to small particles of dust and droplets of water vapour in the atmosphere. Even today, people sometimes incorrectly say that this is the case. Later scientists realised that if this were true, there would be more variation of sky colour with humidity or haze conditions than was actually observed, so they supposed correctly that the molecules of oxygen and nitrogen in the air are sufficient to account for the scattering. The case was finally settled by Einstein in 1911, who calculated the detailed formula for the scattering of light from molecules; and this was found to be in agreement with experiment. He was even able to use the calculation as a further verification of Avogadro’s number when compared with observation. The molecules are able to scatter light because the electromagnetic field of the light waves induces electric dipole moments in the molecules.

5th: Dust Particles cause refraction (Scattering of light)….they scatter blue light more than ohter high wavelength light (coz particles size is too small)………water vapor iofc is the reason of Green house effect…they absorb reflected (long waves) light..!!

  87. CSE2017 aspirant (ABG) Avatar
