  • Deep divisions over NSA talks: The proposed talks between the National Security Advisors of India and Pakistan are hitting several roadblocks, both over the date of the meetings as well as the agenda.   • Aadhaar enrolments of NRIs, PIOs, OICs: Government has decided that Aadhaar enrolment of Non-Resident Indians, Persons of Indian Origin and Overseas Citizen of India should be eventually allowed to help them authenticate their identity digitally, Parliament was informed today. But, no timeframe has been formulated yet for achieving the goal.
  • Weave new designs, says Modi: Today is National Handloom Day, and the Prime Minister has stressed on new designs, branding and e-commerce to launch this rich and colourful heritage on a global scale.
  • Varsities face grant cut if they fail to provide information on faculty:  The All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) began as an exercise four years ago. But universities have failed to provide timely and proper details to the Survey. So, the govt has decided to use its financial control to make them fall in line. And, it has also empowered itself to take punitive action.

Opinion/Editorial

  • The meaning of cheaper oil: This article highlights the impact the low oil prices are going to have on economies worldwide, including India.
  • Give debate a chance: The boycott of Parliament by the leading opposition party during the current session has denied the nation some meaningful debates over the issues, besides holding up critical pieces of legislation such as the GST. However, the fact that senior politicians of the two largest political parties took to debating on policy matters on a point-by-point basis on new media points to a welcome trend.

  • Banks told to be sensitive to needs of MSMEs: Lending to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) is backed by a strong business case, according to the RBI. In this country, they are contributing to some 45 per cent of manufacturing output, 40 per cent of exports and almost 8 per cent of the GDP.
