SC judge seeks clarity on constitutional role of CJI: The NJAC bill, which seeks to enable the political class to have a say in the appointment of Supreme Court judges is currently being examined by a Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court. A question has arisen about the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, as to whether he is the “Chief Justice of India” or the ” Chief Justice of the Supreme Court”. Because, if he is regarded as the CJoI, then his position becomes a basic structure of the constitution and cannot be altered. But if he is CJoSC, then he is merely first among the judges of the Supreme Court, and the method of his appointment as prescribed by the Constitution is open to amendment.
GST: govt. firm on extra tax: The GST bill has been passed by the Lok Sabha. In the Rajya Sabha, it has been referred to a Select Committee which is evaluating it. The Opposition parties are protesting the move by the Ruling party to levy a 1 per cent additional tax, over the GST, to help manufacturing states recover their investments. And they are also protesting the exclusion of tobacco, alcohol and electricity supply from the ambit of the tax.

China slams Japan over security bills: China has slammed the passage of two controversial bills by Japan, which would, for the first time after World War-II, allow Tokyo send troops overseas even without an imminent threat to Japanese territory or citizens. (Relations between China and Japan have historically never been that good. In World War II, Japan had managed to overrun almost the whole of China, and after that there has been the clash of Japanese capitalism (a close ally of US) and Chinese communism.
