  • SC judge seeks clarity on constitutional role of CJI: The NJAC bill, which seeks to enable the political class to have a say in the appointment of Supreme Court judges is currently being examined by a Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court. A question has arisen about the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, as to whether he is the “Chief Justice of India” or the ” Chief Justice of the Supreme Court”. Because, if he is regarded as the CJoI, then his position becomes a basic structure of the constitution and cannot be altered. But if he is CJoSC, then he is merely first among the judges of the Supreme Court, and the method of his appointment as prescribed by the Constitution is open to amendment.
  • GST: govt. firm on extra tax: The GST bill has been passed by the Lok Sabha. In the Rajya Sabha, it has been referred to a Select Committee which is evaluating it. The Opposition parties are protesting the move by the Ruling party to levy a 1 per cent additional tax, over the GST, to help manufacturing states recover their investments. And they are also protesting the exclusion of tobacco, alcohol and electricity supply from the ambit of the tax.

Opinion/Editorial

  • Breaking the ice and avoiding a refreeze: A narration in general of the events unfolding in our two countries in the context of the Ufa summit. Nothing much in a Civil Services sense, just an understanding of facts that will make the picture clear for you.
  • Talking tough with Pakistan: A narration of of the history of India-Pak relations in the last decade vis-a-vis India’s policy of deterrence, and how this policy has changed somewhat over the past six months.
  • Stimulated economy, sluggish investments: Muted demand, delays in land acquisitions and environmental clearances, loans from banks getting stuck due to all these factors that is forcing them not to finance new loans etc have all been causes for slow growth of industry in the country.

International/World Affairs

  • Iran promises preferential treatment to Indian investors: When Iran had been crippled by the trade sanctions imposed by the Western powers (they have just been lifted after the nuclear agreement), India had continued trade with Iran. So, as a thank you gesture, Iran has promised that Indian investments in Iran will get preferential treatment over other countries.
  • China slams Japan over security bills: China has slammed the passage of two controversial bills by Japan, which would, for the first time after World War-II, allow Tokyo send troops overseas even without an imminent threat to Japanese territory or citizens. (Relations between China and Japan have historically never been that good. In World War II, Japan had managed to overrun almost the whole of China, and after that there has been the clash of Japanese capitalism (a close ally of US) and Chinese communism. See yesterday’s newspaper for the original article).

    Thank you for two things:-

    1) Covering alll articles well. I have matched it with the Newspaper and you seem to a full replacement for it

    2) Making the fonts clear so that it is not hurting the eyes anymore.
