Q.1) Consider the following statements regarding the solar cell
1. The efficiency of the solar cell is about 14%
2. The conversion of light into electricity in a solar cell involves both physical and chemical phenomenon
3. Solar cells are knows as photovoltaic cells irrespective of whether the light falling on them is sunlight or artificial light.

Select the correct statement/s using the code given below

a) 1 and 2 only
b) 1 and 3 only
c) 2 and 3 only
d) 1, 2 and 3

Answer: d

Explanations:

Solar (or photovoltaic) cells convert the sun’s energy into electricity. Whether they’re adorning your calculator or orbiting our planet on satellites, they rely on the the photoelectric effect: the ability of matter to emit electrons when a light is shone on it.

Silicon is what is known as a semi-conductor, meaning that it shares some of the properties of metals and some of those of an electrical insulator, making it a key ingredient in solar cells.

Sunlight is composed of miniscule particles called photons, which radiate from the sun. As these hit the silicon atoms of the solar cell, they transfer their energy to loose electrons, knocking them clean off the atoms. The photons could be compared to the white ball in a game of pool, which passes on its energy to the coloured balls it strikes. (Physical Phenomenon)

Freeing up electrons is however only half the work of a solar cell: it then needs to herd these stray electrons into an electric current. This involves creating an electrical imbalance within the cell, which acts a bit like a slope down which the electrons will flow in the same direction.

Creating this imbalance is made possible by the internal organisation of silicon. Silicon atoms are arranged together in a tightly bound structure. By squeezing small quantities of other elements into this structure, two different types of silicon are created: n-type, which has spare electrons, and p-type, which is missing electrons, leaving ‘holes’ in their place. (Chemical Phenomenon)

When these two materials are placed side by side inside a solar cell, the n-type silicon’s spare electrons jump over to fill the gaps in the p-type silicon. This means that the n-type silicon becomes positively charged, and the p-type silicon is negatively charged, creating an electric field across the cell. Because silicon is a semi-conductor, it can act like an insulator, maintaining this imbalance.

As the photons smash the electrons off the silicon atoms, this field drives them along in an orderly manner, providing the electric current to power calculators, satellites and everything in between.

Q.2) What was referred to as ‘The new Quad’ at the World Trade Organization (WTO)?

a) The decision-making structure composed of the US, the EU, Australia, Japan,Russia and India.
b) The decision-making structure composed of the US, the EU, Australia, Japan,Brazil and India.
c) The decision-making structure composed of the US, the EU, Australia, Japan,South Africa and India
d) The decision-making structure composed of the US, the EU, Australia, Japan,China and India

Answer: b

Explanations: Having over 150 members means that decision-making could be a huge potential pitfall for the World Trade Organization. In order to balance representation and efficiency four key groups actually participate in the final stages of decision-making

Q.3) Out of these sectors which of the following does not have of 100% FDI cap?
a) Infrastructure
b) Ecommerce
c) Automotive
d) Services

Answer: d

Explanations:

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India is the major monetary source for economic development in India. Foreign companies invest in India to take benefits of cheaper wages and changing business environment of India. Economic liberalisation started in India in wake of the 1991 economic crisis and since then FDI has steadily increased in India.

There are two routes by which India gets FDI.

  • Automatic route: By this route FDI is allowed without prior approval by Government or Reserve Bank of India.
  • Government route: Prior approval by government is needed via this route. Foreign Investment Promotion Board is the responsible agency to oversee this route.

Service
FDI in service sector was increased by 46% in 2014–15. Service sector includes banking, insurance, outsourcing, research & development, courier and technology testing. FDI limit in insurance sector was raised from 26% to 49% in 2014.

Q.5) Under Defense Procurement Policy (DPP), capital acquisitions are categorized into:

1.Buy(Indian)
2.Buy & Make (Indian)
3.Buy (Global).

Select the correct answer using the codes given below:

a) 1 only
b) 2 only
c) 1 and 2
d)1, 2 and 3

Answer: d

Explanations:

Defence Procurement Policy came into effect in 2002. Under DPP all capital acquisitions are categorized into: Buy(Indian), Buy & Make (Indian), Make, Buy & Make, Buy (Global).

Buy (Indian) : minimum of 30% indigenous content.

Buy & Make (Indian) : Initial quantities are purchased through the Indian company followed by licensed production in India by an Indian company / joint venture(JV). Indigenization level should be a minimum of 50%.

Make: applies to cases where Indian companies and / or DRDO have the capability to develop high technology complex systems through local research, design and development in a reasonable amount of time. Indigenization level is a minimum of 30%.

Buy & Make with ToT (Transfer of technology): It applies to cases where Indian companies buy from foreign entities with offset obligation of 30%.No offset obligation will apply if the indigenous content is 50% or more.

Q.7) Which of the following statement is correct regarding MGNREGA?
1. It was inspired by Maharashtra Employment Guarantee Act, passed in 1977
2. People were empowered through wage employment
3. Aims to guarantee the ‘right to work’
4. Providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year

Select the code given below:

a) 1, 3 and 4
b) 1, 2 and 4
c) 2, 3 and 4
d) 1, 2, 3 and 4

Answer: d

Explanations: “Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act” (or, MGNREGA), is an Indian labour law and social security measure that aims to guarantee the ‘right to work’
The MGNREGA was initiated with the objective of “enhancing livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year, to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
It was inspired by Maharashtra Employment Guarantee Act, passed in 1977.
Starting from 200 districts on 2 February 2006, the MGNREGA covered all the districts of India from 1 April 2008
Apart from providing economic security and creating rural assets, MGNREGA can help in protecting the environment, empowering rural women, reducing rural-urban migration and fostering social equity, among others.
MGNREGA is to be implemented mainly by gram panchayats. The involvement of contractors is banned. Labour-intensive tasks like creating infrastructure for water harvesting, drought relief and flood control are preferred.
The NDA government has decided to provide 150 days for rain hit areas
