[Solutions]

ANSWER  KEY

Ans1.  C |Ans2.  A |Ans3.  C    |Ans4.  A   |Ans5.  D|Ans6.  C|Ans7.   C| Ans8.  D|Ans9.  D|Ans10.  D

Explanations

Ans.1)
Let the amounts invested in A,B and C be p,q and r respectively
Then  (p x 2 x 5) / 100 = (q x 3 x 5) / 100 = (r x 4 x 5) / 100 = Say k
Thus p = 10k , q = (20k)/3 and r= 5k
So p : q : r =  10k : (20/3)k : 5k => p : q : r = 30 : 20 : 15 => p : q : r = 6 : 4 : 3
Hence the  correct option is C

Ans.2)
The smallest  interval after which all lights change  together is the lowest common denominator of their respective times to change i.e. LCM of 24, 72 and 120 which comes out to be 360 seconds i.e 6 minutes.
Thus they will all change simultaneously after 6 minutes from  10 : 54 : 00 which is 11:00:00
Hence the  correct option is A

Ans. 3)
Lets define expenditure (E) as No of quantity  consumed (Q) x Price of one quantity(P).
Thus, as per question expenditure is same in both cases i.e  E = Q1 x P1 = Q2 x P2
Now consumption by 20 % i.e Q2 = Q1 + 0.2 Q1 = 1.2  Q1 .
Hence from above equation we get P2 =(5/6)P1. Thus decrease in consumption is P1-(5/6)P1=P1/6
Now percentage decrease is ( (P1/6) /  P1 )x100 = 16.67 %
Hence the  correct option is C

 Ans.4),  Ans.5) and Ans.6)

GIVEN :: Rama and Mohan are a married couple having two daughters named Smita and Devika.  Devika is married to a man who is the son of Madhu and Jeevan .Romila is the daughter of Aman. Krishna who is Aman’s sister is married to Sunil and has two sons Anuj and Ankur. Ankur is grandson of Madhu and Jeevan.

From the information given above, we can conclude the following ::

  1. Rama and Mohan have two children namely Smita and Devika
  2. Devika is married to a male, say X, who is the son of Madhu and Jeevan.
  3. Madhu and Jevaan have two more children (apart from X) namely Krishna and Aman. Thus Madhu and Jeevan have three children namely X, Krishna and Aman. Thus X, Krishna and Aman and siblings.
  4. Krishna is married to Sunil and they have two children namely Ankur and Anuj.
  5. Aman has one child called Romila.

6.Thus Ankur, Anuj and Romila are the grandchildren of Madhu and Jeevan.

Ans.4)
Thus Krishna’s   brother (X) is the husband of Devika. Hence Krishna is the sister-in-law of Devika
Hence the  correct option is A

Ans.5) We know that Krishna and Aman are siblings. Also Anuj is Krishna’s son and Romila is Aman’s daughter. Thus Anuj and Romila are Cousins.
Hence the  correct option is D

 Ans.6)
Option a)  Anuj is son of Smita./ WRONG. / Anuj is son of Krishna and Sunil. Hence rejected.
Option b) Romila is the cousin of Krishna. /WRONG./Krishna is Romila’s aunt.Hence Rejected.
Option c) Madhu is Sunil’s mother-in-law./CORRECT./Accepted.
Option d) Jeevan is Devika’s maternal uncle./WRONG/Jeevan is the Father-in-law of Devika. Rejected.
Hence the  correct option is C

Ans.7)
Except Option (C) all other options are out of context and do not confirm with what has been explicitly stated in the passage. Option C is true and can be seen stated in the lines of passage which says “Dolphins are regarded as the friendliest creatures in the sea and stories of them helping drowning sailors have been common since Roman times”
Hence correct option is C.

Ans.8)
Except Option D. all other options are out of context and do not confirm with what has been explicitly stated in the passage. Option D is true and can be seen stated in  lines of passage which says “Certainly the most common argument in favor of man’s superiority over them that we can kill them more easily than they can kill us is the least satisfactory. On the contrary, the more we discover about these remarkable creatures, the less we appear superior when we destroy them”.
Hence correct option is D.

Ans.9)
Except Option D. all other options are out of context and do not confirm with what has been explicitly stated in the passage. Option D is true and can be seen stated in last line of passage which says “They look after other dolphins when they are ill, care for pregnant mothers and protect the weakest in the community, as we do”.
Hence correct option is D.

Ans.10)
Both 1 and 2 look very tempting to conclude from the passage but again they do not confirm with what has been explicitly stated in the passage. For ex– 1.) can be negated  because nowhere in the passage does the author has discussed the mode of communication via sound waves of high frequency. Thus we don’t know for sure. Also 2.) can be negated because nowhere in the passage does the author has the author  compared the complexity of Dolphin’s society with that of human society.
Hence correct option is D.

Thanks for you liked it Vijay!

  2. This is how I would solve it. UPSC may give questions that look calculation intensive, but they are never calculation itensive. They simply require you to think and “deduce” the answer rather than calculate it.

Thanks for Ur assistance .The moment i saw that question , i left it without out giving much attention (even read the first sentence only )as i thought i didn’t understand the question. But now after seeing Ur method i wish i could have attended that question. Again thanks for Ur selfless or generosity in showing the good method to students….Big applause……..

    Shortcut to solve question 1.

Amounts are to be invested for 2yrs, 3yrs & 4yrs respectively and the returns are same with a given interest rate (5%).
Here, instead of solving the question mathematically we can look at the options available and reach the answer.

By simple logic, the amounts invested should be in descending order. Because the time period is increasing. Amount invested for 2yrs should obviously be higher than that invested for 3yrs and investment for 3yrs should be higher than investment for 4yrs, to get the same returns.

If we look at the options, only Option C has the invested amounts in descending order, i.e., most for 2yrs and least for 4yrs. Hence, this only is the correct answer.
