[Solution] – Saturday CSAT Quiz #4

                                 [Solution] –  CSAT  QUIZ    1

Q.1) Raman sells 2 horses for Rs. 200 each. On one he gets a profit of 10% while losing 10% on the other. What is his overall profit %  or loss % ?
a) 2 %
b)  1 %
c) 11 %
d) No profit and No loss

Ans1.  When S.P. of two things is same and On one there is a profit of X % while on the other there is a loss of X%  then there will always be a loss of  (X*X / 100) % on the net  transaction.

Hence here loss is (10*10 / 100) = 1% =>  B is the correct answer.

Proof :    let SP1 = SP2 = p  |   => CP1 =( 100 / (100 + X) ) * p  & CP2 = (100 / (100 – X))*p

Net SP = p+p=2p  |   Net CP = CP1+CP2  |   Now  loss = Net CP – Net SP and loss % =( loss /Net CP ) * 100

Thus  Loss % = (X*X) / 100 %

Hence correct option is B

Q.2)  Rs. 1150 is to be divided among A, B and C such that the ratio of share of A to that of B is equal to   3 : 2 and share of B to share of C is equal to is 3 : 4. Find out their respective  individual  shares that they get after such a  division.
a) 450, 400, 300
b) 450, 300, 350
c) 400, 300, 450
d) 450, 300, 400

Ans2.   Given A : B = 3 : 2 = 9 : 6 and B : C = 3 : 4 = 6 : 8 = > A : B : C = 9 : 6 : 8

Thus A’s share =  ( 9 / (9 + 6 + 8) ) * 1150 = (9 / 23) * 1150 = 9 *  50 = 450

Similarly B’s share = (6 / 23) *1150 =  6 * 50 = 300 and C’s share = (8 / 23)*1150 = 400

Hence correct option is D

Q.3)  A hare takes 9 leaps in the same time as a dog takes 4. But the dog’s leap is 2 and 1/3 m long while hare’s is only 1 m. How many leaps will the dog have to take before catching the hare if the hare had a head start of 16 m?
a) 129
b) 921
c) 192
d) 291

Ans 3. For hare;  9 leaps and each leap is 1m

=> Distance in 9 leaps = 9 *1 = 9 m in time ‘t’

For Dog; 4 leaps and each leap is 2 and 1/3 or 7/3 m

  • Distance covered in 4 leaps is 4*(7/3) = 28/3 m in time ‘t’

Now 28/3 = 9 +(1/3 ) > 9 => Dog gain 1/3 m in  4 leaps =>  Dog gains 1 m in 12 leaps

But the initial distance between dog and hare is 16 m (given).Thus dog will gain 16 m in 16 X 12 = 192 leaps and catch the hare.

Hence correct option is C

Read the following information to answer the three questions that follow

d) All of the above

Ans 5)  N is son of M (given)
Option a.  M + N x O =>  M is mother of N and N is bother of O =>  N is son of M. Thus selected.
Option b. M + N – O => M is mother of N and N is husband  of O =>  N is son of M. Thus selected.
Option c. N / M => N is son of M. Thus selected.

Option b. N + O x M  => N is mother of O and O is brother of M = > M is son of N. Thus rejected.
Option c. N / M + O =>  N is son of M and  M is mother of O => M is mother of N. Thus rejected.
Option d. None of the above.
Hence correct option is D

Read the passage given below to answer the four questions that follow

Opera refers to a dramatic art form, originating in Europe, in which the emotional content is conveyed to the audience as much through music, both vocal and instrumental, as it is through the lyrics. By contrast, in musical theater an actor’s dramatic performance is primary, and the music plays a lesser role. The drama in opera is presented using the primary elements of theater such as scenery, costumes, and acting. However, the words of the opera, or libretto, are sung rather than spoken. The singers are accompanied by a musical ensemble ranging from a small instrumental ensemble to a full symphonic orchestra.

Q.7) It is pointed out in the reading that opera —-.
a) has developed under the influence of musical theater
b) is a drama sung with the accompaniment of an orchestra
c) is not a high-budget production
d) is often performed in Europe

Ans 7) Except Option B. all other options are out of context and do not confirm with what has been explicitly stated in the passage.

Hence correct option is B.

Q.8) We can understand from the reading that —-.
a) people are captivated more by opera than musical theater
b) drama in opera is more important than the music
c) orchestras in operas can vary considerably in size
d) musical theater relies above all on music

Ans.8)  Except Option C. all other options are out of context and do not confirm with what has been explicitly stated in the passage. Option C is true and can be seen stated in last line of passage which says “The singers are accompanied by a musical ensemble ranging from a small instrumental ensemble to a full symphonic orchestra.” Here small to full means – orchestras in operas can vary considerably in size.

Hence correct option is C.

Q.9) It is stated in the reading that —-.
a) acting and costumes are secondary to music in musical theater
b) many people find musical theater more captivating than opera
c) music in musical theater is not as important as it is in opera
d) an opera requires a huge orchestra as well as a large choir

Ans.9) Except Option C. all other options are out of context and do not confirm with what has been explicitly stated in the passage. Option C is true and can be seen stated in the passage which says “. By contrast, in musical theater an actor’s dramatic performance is primary, and the music plays a lesser role”. Here “contrast” suggests that music in musical theater is not as important as it is in opera.

Hence correct option is C.

Q.10)  It can’t be concluded from the reading that —-
1. Opera is a form of dramatic art that that is used to display sensitive emotional content mostly.
2. The music and lyrics form the most integral part of opera as compared to scenery, costumes, and acting.

Select the correct answer using the codes given below.
a) Only 1 is correct.
b) Only 2 is correct.
c) Both 1 and 2 are correct.
d) Neither 1 nor 2 is correct.

Ans 10) Both 1 and 2 look very tempting to conclude from the passage but again they do not confirm with what has been explicitly stated in the passage. For ex– 1.) can be negated  if Opera might be used to display comic content too, not necessarily emotional or sentimental theme mostly. Thus we don’t know for sure. Also 2.) can be negated because nowhere in the passage does the author has compared the importance of the music and lyrics with the importance of scenery, costumes, and acting in the opera.

Hence correct option is D.
