[Solutions]

Q.1) Three taps A, B and C can fill a tank in 12, 15 and 20 hours respectively. If A is open all the time and B and C are open for one hour each alternately, in what time will the tank be full?
a) 9 hours
b) 7 hours
c) 8 hours
d) 10 hours

Ans. (b)

Explanation :Let the capacity of tank be the L.C.M of 12, 15 and 20. Thus capacity is 60 litres

Now A can fill the tank in 12 hours => A fills 5 ; 60/12 ; litres in 1 hour

B can fill the tank in 15 hours => B fills 4 ; 60/15 ; litres in 1 hour

C can fill the tank in 20 hours => C fills  3 ; 60/20 ; litres in 1 hour

Thus in first hour A and B fill 9 ; 4 + 5 ; litres  and in second hour A and C fill  8 ; 5 + 3 ; litres

Thus in 2 hours A, B and C fill 9 + 8 = 17 litres => In 6 hours A, B and C fill 17 x 3 = 51 litres.

In next two hours  A and B fill another  9 litres making 51 + 9 = 60 litres

Total time taken = 6 + 1 = 7 hours.

Hence, option C is correct.

Q.2) A and B started a business in partnership investing Rs. 20,000 and 15,000 respectively. After 6 months, C joined them with Rs. 20,000. What will be B’s share in total profit of Rs. 25,000 earned at the end of 2 years from the starting of the business?
a) Rs. 8000
b) Rs. 8500
c) Rs. 9000
d) Rs. 7500

Ans. (d)

Explanation :    A invests 20,000 for 2 years => Net value of capital = 20,000 x 2 = 40,000

B invests 15,000 for 2 years => Net value of capital  = 15,000 x 2 = 30,000

C invests 20,000 for 1.5 years => Net value of capital  = 20,000 x 1.5 = 30,000

Ratio of capitals of A, B and C = 40,000 : 30,000 : 30,000 = 4 : 3 : 3

Now profit must be shared in the ratio of capital invested

Thus ratio of Profit of A, B and C = 4 : 3 : 3

Thus, 4x + 3x + 3x = 25,000 => 10x =25,000 => x = 2,500

Thus A gets 4x = 10,000 at the end of 2 years

B gets 3x = 7,500 at the end of 2 years , and C gets 3x = 7,500 at the end of 2 years.

Hence option d) is correct.

Q.3) A boatman goes 2 km against the current of stream in 1 hour and goes 1 km along the current in 10 minutes. How long will it  take to go 5 km in stationary water?
a) 80 min
b) 75 min
c) 70 min
d) 72 min

Ans. (B)

Explanation :   Boatman goes against the stream @2km / 1 hour. There speed while against the current = 2kmph.

Boatman in direction of stream covers  1km/ 10 minutes = 6kms / 60 minutes = 6kmph

Speed of Boat in Still Water + Speed of Current = 6

Speed of Boat in Still Water – Speed of Current = 2

============================================

2 x Speed of Boat in Still Water = 8

Speed of Boat in Still Water = 4kmph = 4km in 60 minutes

Therefore time to cover 25% more distance ( 5 kms is 1.25 times of 4 kms ) = 60 minutes * 25% more time = 75 minutes.

Directions (Ques. 4 – 6) Study the following information carefully and answer the given questions.

Explanation : It can be explicitly seen from the figure that A is in east direction with respect to C. Hence option a) is correct.

Passage 1

Financial inclusion enables improved and better sustainable economic and social development of the country. It helps in the empowerment of the underprivileged, poor and women of the society with the mission of making them self-sufficient and well informed to take better financial decisions. Financial inclusion takes into account the participation of vulnerable groups such as weaker sections of the society and low income groups, based on the extent of their access to financial services such as savings and payment account, credit insurance, pensions etc. Also the objective of financial inclusion exercise is easy availability of financial services which allows maximum investment in business opportunities, education, save for retirement, insurance against risks, etc. by the rural individuals and firms.

The penetration of financial services in the rural areas of India is still very low. The factors responsible for this condition can be looked at from both supply side and demand side and the major reason for low penetration of financial services is, probably, lack of supply. The reasons for low demand for financial services could be low income level, lack of financial literacy, other bank accounts in the family, etc. On the other hand, the supply side factors include no bank branch in the vicinity, lack of suitable products meeting the needs of the poor people, complex processes and language barriers. Since 2005, many concerted measures are initiated by the Reserve Bank of India and Government of India in favor of financial inclusion but the impact of these did not yield satisfactory results.

Q.7) Which of the following is the most logical aim of financial inclusion mentioned in the passage above?
a) Financial inclusion is the key factor to boost economic growth of India.
b) Financial inclusion would entitle the rural people to have a quality life by bringing opportunities and offering basic financial services to everyone.
c) Financial inclusion would help in keeping the track record of the rising income levels in India.
d) Financial inclusion would help the government to simplify tax structure.

Ans. (b)
Explanation :Option a) is only slightly relevant to  main theme and content of the passage while Option c) and d) are the extensions to the central idea of the passage which we can’t be sure about. Only option b) covers what has been explicitly message in the passage. Hence option b) is correct.

Q.8) The author mentions that the efforts towards bringing the rural population under the umbrella of financial inclusion has not yielded expected outcomes. Which of the following is not the reason behind it?

  1. Government has lacked to implement ground level schemes like direct benefit transfer which would require banking services to be used by rural population.
  2. The products that are being offered by banking services in rural areas are not much use to the people.
  3. Rural population is not skilled enough to earn at a decent income level which would require opening and operating bank accounts.
  4. The processes involved in utilizing banking services are not simple enough to be used rural population.

a) 1 only
b) 1, 2 and 3 only
c) 1, 2, 3 and 4
d) 1 and 3 only

Ans. (d)
Explanation :The passage nowhere explicitly mentions about govt. failure in implementing schemes like direct benefit transfer or insufficient income levels in the rural areas. Thus statement 1 and statement 3 are wrong. Also the passage mentions about “lack of suitable products meeting the needs of the poor people, complex processes and language barriers” which is mention in statement 2 and statement 4 . Hence option d) is correct

Passage 2

A progressive agriculture serves as a powerful engine of economic growth of any country. It helps in initiating and sustaining the development of other sectors of the economy. In view of this, after independence the Government of India adopted a positive approach and specific programmes like new agriculture technology were introduced. Indian farmers being poor were not in a position to buy these expensive inputs. Then the Indian Government started the scheme of subsidies on the purchase of various agriculture inputs to facilitate the farmers. Subsidies are often criticized for their financial burden, on the other hand there is a fear that agriculture production and income of farmers would decline if subsidies are curtailed.

Q.9) With reference to the above passage above, which of the following is/are true ?
1) The subsidies are rejected by some economists as they put heavy fiscal load on the exchequer.
2) Government should frame a more rational policy for subsidies in which small size category farmers, who are not actual beneficiaries of subsidies, could get more and subsides.

a)  1 only
b) 2 only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 nor 2.

Ans. (a)
Explanation: Statement 1 is true as can be in the line “Subsidies are often criticized for their financial burden”. Statement 2 mentions a more rational policy w.r.t small size farmers who do not get befitted from the ongoing subsidy policy. Statement  2 seems connected to the content but is not conveyed through the passage. Hence we can’t take it. Thus option a) is correct.

Passage 3
India continues to be an under-insured state compared to middle income countries such as China, Brazil and the developed countries such as United States of America and the United Kingdom. Hence, both private and public sector insurance companies are making enormous efforts to create insurance awareness. An analysis based on socio-economic parameters enables an understanding of the categories of people which are insured and aware of insurance. Thus, the government needs to create appropriate awareness and take necessary steps to protect the poor households. Also, poor people cannot access improved health and educational facilities and this makes them more vulnerable to the uncertainties.

Q.10) Which is the critical inference that can be made from the above passage?
a) As of now, the perception of households does not give required attention to the concept of insurance and its benefits.
b) An analysis on socio-economic parameters should be made by the government to enable an understanding of the categories of people which are insured and aware of insurance
c) A higher proportion of insured households are both salaried and regular wage earners or are self-employed.
d) If not insured due to lack of knowledge, the impact of financial loss can be disastrous for the economically poor people and hence they need to be guarded against it.

Ans. (d)
Explanation:  Option a) and Option b) are true w.r.t to the content and the tone of the passage but can’t serve as a critical inference from the passage while we can’t be sure about Option c) as it is not mentioned in the content. Option d) is most relevant and can be seen in the line “the government needs to create appropriate awareness and take necessary steps to protect the poor households”Hence option d) is correct.
