What is Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS)? What are the applications of IRNSS? Why is it so critical to the military?

IRNSS or Navic is Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System analogous to GPS of US or Glonas of Russia. It is a system of 03 geostationary and 04 geosynchronous satellite system each in its defined set orbits. It has accuracy levels of approx. 15 m and has a wide service area of 1500 km.

It offers two services – public and other ‘restricted’ – limited to military usage.

The developments bears importance as India was denied GPS support during the Kargil War. With the system in place, India has pushed far in being resilient and self-sufficient in strategic aspects.

IRNSS Applications:
1. Defense – Navigation support during military operations.
a) It can help pinpoint military personnel location
b) Serve to help direct missile and other offensive measures to pin point target
c) Can monitor movement of troops as mapping measure

2. Navigation –
a )Support to road,
b) rail
c aerial and
d) marine transportation.

This would be beneficial in locating/ monitoring the movement of vehicle, direction and navigation support to boats and ships

3. Integration with mobile system – With this, it would come in handy for public who can track their movements as well as their vehicles

4. Disaster Management

It holds critical importance as India geo-politically shares boundaries with China and Pakistan amidst other neighbours. There has been a spurt in insurgency operations and border management is highly imperative from India’s perspective.
