I was going to write something but i found this online.

At the very onset, Carl cited the ancient Hindu sacred text of Rigveda and conceded, “The most sophisticated cosmological ideas came from Asia and particularly from India. Here, there is a tradition of sceptical questioning and unselfconscious humility before the great cosmic mysteries.”
There is also a YouTube video of him saying this.
I'd say Carl Sagan trumps PBM.

I believe the problem arises when compared to Abrahamic systems. Otherwise, not having any fixed identity is the identity of Hindus IMO.
Attempts have been made and are currently being made( e.g ISKCON and Focus on Lord Krishna and Bhagvat Gita) but I doubt they will reach any definitive identity. For example, I know Sagun and Nirguna worshippers, Vegetarians and Non-Vegetarians ( I know a bunch of families who eat Non-veg on Diwali, a pretty unusual sight). I know people who worship Lord Rama and others who only worship Lord Shiva. The festivals vary, the Gods vary, and even the way of worship varies. From Animism to Totemism, you will find great varieties. Even, the way of bidding farewell to the deceased varies from funeral pyres, to burials and even water burials. On top of that, it is all inter spread in a huge population. You just cannot push a one size fits all approach onto a population so huge, so diverse.
Therefore, India should be handling politics and religion should be akin to holding sand in your fist, i.e.- a loose hold. The tighter you hold, the more difficult it would be to sustain.

There is no trumping. Both are correct. Competition thodi na hai. PBM is talking about one thing, Sagan about other.
+101

I think that's the real beauty of Hinduism - it has space for everyone. I don't think we should be looking to create a one size fits all identity. It's a futile exercise. There's just too much diversity. The freedom to practice Hinduism in whichever way one sees fit is one of the reasons why it has survived for centuries and that's what what sets it apart from the Abrahamic religions. State interference should be resisted unless it is to abolish cruel practices (Sati, untouchability are good examples).

I commented without looking at this post. Perfectly sums up my thoughts!
