Geography optional Mains 2019 discussion | Lessons Learnt
Where are all the poor souls of geo in forum ?
Guys... What do you think about paper 1 ? Would it be like 2017 where people claimed they got much more than expected due to some lenient correction ?
Similarly in paper 2 I found that I had very less case studies and facts to quote on paper. Pls do comment so that we can have a gauge of the way optional is going.

@Rand_Al_ThorI was expecting 125-130 in 2017, got 133. This year I had much better preparation, still found it tougher than 2017, expecting around 125 only.
@vvvikas0078212What about paper 2 ? How do you think it was ? Easy or moderate ?
@Rand_Al_Thormap only 5 correct. Rest was ok. Finding geo oriented contect was difficult though.

@Scorpion888yeah. And in inter state migration I brought in ravenstein and stouffers migration law. But it all looks as if we forced a theory into an answer. Lacked real linkage

@Bubba_gumpI have written mains twice before. So I calculate based on previous marks.
@Scorpion888Paper 1 human geo was like gs only. I wrote about Perrourx theory of growth poles in two lines and spread effect by Myrdal. Rest I wrote general about argument for and against growth pole based development.

My observations for 2019 Optional Paper 1: (Will write soon for paper 2)
Paper seems easy in first outlook, but it is not. All the questions are from Hardcore Geography Subject and requires extreme extreme understanding of the subject. This subject is opted by 1/3 mains aspirants (UPSC data). UPSC has explored depth of Geography this year.
All questions from standard books: All the questions in Paper 1 are framed by Savindra Singh, Rupa and Majid Hussain books. Line by line/ topic by topic. If anybody interested, I can share page numbers.
No shortcuts: Geography Optional is not for shortcuts now- like coaching handwritten notes, test series, 500 etc.
A direct blow on Delhi Coachings: There is no question from hardcore Perspective Topics. The Perspective questions are: HDI, Cultural region, climatic migration- and these are not from Coaching wala Perspective.
Read Books: All the fringe questions are from books. Including Phreatic, Tombolo, wave of life (Q. 3(c)), ocean waves, GRR.
Read Standard Books: Physical Geography by Savindra Singh is deliberately ignored. All the questions are direct lines/ Topic of four part books for physical geography by Savindra Singh: Geomorphology, Climatology, Oceanography, Environmental Geography. Those topics are asked, which are asked which are not in Physical geo book, but are in part books.
Environmental geo questions, though seems easy, they are not, except Q 2(a). Those are hardcore Geography Optional topics.
....Q 2(c)- Directly from Applied Climatology wala chapter: Quote Study by W.R. Rouse, Harmack and Landserg, H.E. Hobbs, Changnon, TR Oke. Discuss concepts like urban climatology, building climatology, heat island, urban wind cell) etc.
....Q 3(c)- Theory by MJ Holiman (Four Ecological Principles)
....Q 4(a) and 4(b): Direct hit from Envt. geo book.Pattern is repeated. 21/28 questions are repeated from PYQs.
My recommendation: Don't run blindly behind a coaching, test series or answer writing. Those are increasingly become useless
@jnik21/28 questions repeated ? I thought only the theme of the question was repeated. The question by itself I dont think was from PYQ.
@jnikI have done 500 program of guidance and I have found many questions from the notes of sir. Concepts and theories he taught were applicable in several of the questions of paper 1 And 2.
@Hartshornebro when I told that 500 is bad. many questions are from 500. but all questions are from books. there is difference between 'many' and 'all'

@Hartshornewhile writing mains this year, in the first look both papers looked very easy. At least questions were approachable.. except one or two.
But when I actually started writing, I realized that the questions demand core concepts of geography, even in paper 2. Many questions are asked from core geography theory in paper 2, which looks like simple GS type questions. Like Price of land question. Its core theory of urban morphology. Many questions are framed from savindra Singh part books in paper 2. I gave up in between. J knew what I am writing that is purely BAKAR for a geography teacher.
Marks might increase because everyone was able to write something. But my prediction for geography optional is poor result.
