Mains 2020 : Essay and GS Discussion, Issues, Difficulty Level, Way ahead

Hello All, Essay paper is done. Question was a bit weird, at least part A where quotes were also not famous types. How did people approach the essay paper, which topics did you write on ? Did you use whitener anywhere? Did you do rough work ?

GS 3: Attempted all..Some bouncers in 1-2 questions like GS 2

GS 4: Went like disaster..Ethics theory was looking like philosophy questions..Required anaytical thinking..Case studies me case hi samajh nhi aa rha tha..That APW one and that Arms Trade..Kehna kya chah rha tha bhaiya😂

Found paper difficult than last year. Questions needed specific knowledge. Saw in one telegram group where a much followed person (kaptaan) posted after GS1 that questions were easy. I found it most difficult due to Pala, Persian etc.

So came here to see general review. Slightly relieved to see everyone found it on difficult side.

So, having gone through all these comments, am I the only one thinking GS 4 was easy, or is it Dunning Kruger in effect? Cause I found it more difficult in GS 3. It was impossible to differentiate my answers from that a 12th class student would have written. Also, if you don't manage to write a conclusion in essay, how many marks do you lose? 20, 30? I shat the bed in 2nd essay.

@pavit Hi, I also wrote on the same topic. I introduced with the story of Budhha and his journey from Human being to bring Human(ordinary intro though) then explained the meaning of these two. The divided body into two headings, 1) Human being and Being Human: The Gap, 2) Human being and Being Human:The Convergence, and then last page for conclusion. I don't know how it went? Bus likh diya.

Just saying; Finishing the question paper as a standard for success is a misnomer; many toppers have written on quora how writing for the sake of it might have a negative impact on the checker, which in turn reduces the scope for extra marks even in good questions.

This year looks like evaluators will be frustrated with every answer sheet given everyone seems to have completed the paper, or maybe this is the case every year.(18-19 question I guess should be the optimal position)

Personally, i have focussed on quality over quantity(except case studies) ,will have to wait for the result to see how the approach works

@HotBloodPrince APW, I started with appreciation, that everything he did was what an ideal government should be doing
Environment, SHG (women), School (children), Skill development (employment), health (ambulance) and so on. That the guy should be appreciated and even imitated was a no brainer

Then I went for the caveat

I started with a disclaimer that even though it is stereotypical to think so, an industrialist by the very definition is a profit minded individual,, and so on the balance of probability, it can be reasonably assumed that Mr. Anil is not so different, and his actions merited adequate caution based on two factors: Tax holiday began in 2010, and it was 2019, so soon to end, and second, that he had cultivated undying loyalty.

So, if in 2020, when the holiday ran out, and he went to the Noora villagers and declared that he must leave now, because he cannot sustain the APW anymore, the villagers could very well rebel. He was their Messiah, or as close to being it. If he asked them to pressure the government into continuing the tax holiday, the villagers would readily be up in arms about it. This has two major drawbacks: he becomes a parallel government and the exchequer may lose further if incentives began to be misused like this all over the country

In a democracy, undying loyalty to a person can tear the society apart from inside.

Of course I wrote this whole thing in points, and with a little more clarifying details, but this is the long and short of it.

@Master attempted same question... Started with the story of man carrying body of dead daughter on shoulders and how people clicked photos but didn't helped...
Than few arguments why people are not behaving in humane manner like due to materialistic philosophy which focusses on individualism... Value less education system...Ethical values not part of our operating values...
Some positive examples of mother Teresa, baba amte...Civil servants like pratik nair etc.
Few teachings of buddha and mahavir.
Than few quotes of Gandhi, Ambedkar and Vivekanand about service to humanity like To reach Narayan (god) serve Daridra Narayan(poor).
Sarvodaya through Antyodaya...

GS 4 was not easy! Probably the most difficult after the paper was introduced. This is because over the years students have got used to a pattern in case studies and theory questions. Usually 4-5 theory questions from “civil services values” are written well with examples etc. Another 2-3 basic questions on moral philosophy also could be written. This year there were no questions from these topics. Case studies were very lengthy to read and had unconventional instructions which required re-reading and it ate away a lot of time.

Wrote 4 mains including this one, and I can certainly day that give priority to quantity over quality..

Its very very difficult to clear this exam if you aren't completing your paper (by completing I mean not being able to attempt a qn which you know. But unable to due to paucity of time..

Hello, I wrote the being human and being humane wala essay, but i did not approach it from a very philosophical pov, I wrote a story about migrant crisis, proceeded to write about social contract and that it is under stress, wrote how being human and humane is Diverging (7-8 perspective), then why divergence is happening and finally concluded with how to bridge the gap?

Will I be penalized for not approaching this essay philosophically?

Thank you.

No, if you are able to relate it with topic. Doesn't matter much if you have not addressed it from philosophical dimension. It's essay paper not political science, philosophy, or any other.

@Dip gs1 and gs4 case studies were most difficult for me as well

In social and economic essay i emphasised the vulnerabilities of sc,st, minorities, manual scavengers, transgenders and how economic growth is necessary fr ensuring justice fr them.

Thn in second part i wrote hw economic growth without justice to these ppl becomes meaningless fr them and also for the country.

Thn i suggested inclusive growth strategy by ensuring capabilities development of vulnerable sections as the way forward.

Is it relevant?

Need some help, in ethics question 7 about appropriation of fund /sez/8300 crore. I have talked about a step which says that political executive is the authority which takes decisions and civil servants are duty bound to follow it.

Effectively ask for in writing, register my opinion/comments over the matter that it should not be re appropriated. But will follow it because as per my knowledge civil servants duty bound to follow political executives/govt of the day. Though it was vague but in such short time I understood from finance ministry para that probably the govt/union was involved. (not talking about state executives)

How damaging can it be to my over all score?

Experience has taught me any extremity can affect over all score especially in ethics. I deliberately tried to avoid. But I may have fallen back in the well.

Unnecessary length of ethics case study were very taxing on mind in those menacing hours.

Asking again. Bhai koi bata do

In "Ship" wala essay

I wrote that crisis though persists in world like covid, environment, poverty etc. , But when we don't do enough to solve those crisis in time and it overpower us then the problem gets aggravated and proves havoc for us.

Is this interpretation alright?

Essay:being humane and patriarchy. Personally, had strayed very far in the unconventional type of topics in MGP Essay tests, so stuck to options where I understood the topic properly. I think philosophical topics have been increasing in focus over time so was not worried seeing the merger of philosophical topics and factual ones. Rushed a bit in the conclusion of the 2nd essay, so had to leave one page blank, but let's hope the rest made up for it because patriarchy was a very interesting topic.

GS 1:A&C is my Achilles heel, and Pala and Persian literature questions stumped me, cause hadn't revised since prelims. The other A&C questions were more open-ended so could write some specific facts. History was fine, misattributed vernacular press act to Curzon but did focus on the partition of Bengal as well. Geography and Society were quite straightforward. Also felt that they are unnecessarily asking environment(Q15), energy (Q16) and education (Q20) and not respecting GS1, 2 & 3 boundary but I mean I could answer those but perhaps examples, data was missing as mentally was in GS1 frame.

GS 2:Mostly on expected lines. Questions framing (Q12, Q13, Q16) required the presence of mind and I hope I've understood the key demand correctly. Q4 was tough even for me with law optional, but I think mostly rest of Polity and Governance and SJ was fine. IR Q 9 & 10 were fine but Q19&20 were a bit on the unconventional side.

GS 3:Nothing was very out of the box. Q5 (Nanotech) was a bit tough to give many examples so was a little unsatisfactory. I think more stats, keywords, diagrams can differentiate answer copies here because I am sure most people had prepared or were expecting questions in this paper.

GS 4:Section A went pretty well I think. Could write lots of quotes and examples, and understood most things. Didn't know what Savitribai Phule did exactly so little faff there. Section B was blend of expected topics (Q12 migrant labour) and unconventional ones (Q7 finance one, Q12 APW) - but I liked that case studies were long, so we had less space to fill because usually, that's where my time-management suffers. On the flip side, couldn't cover all the facts in the case study in analysis.

All the best to all for the last leg of UPSC!

You will get marks if your essay have given facts, important laws, reports etc. Even if you have not addressed the demand precisely but somewhere around it. Even in that case you can get 125 marks.
