Dear Students,
The storm of Prelims 2021 has just settled and you must have entered a phase to evaluate your preparation level while analyzing the changing nature of the Prelims exam. The Commission has stood up to its reputation to be dynamic, challenging, and ever-evolving. This year we have seen the continuation of conceptual questions derived from a rich balance of static and current affairs, there has also been a return of pre-2013 format with assertion/reasoning based questions, questions on personality, and major sports events etc.
Validating our performance with more than 2000+ selections in 2021 through our SFG Test series, we are hereby entering the 4th year of one of our most innovative programs for successfully cracking the Prelims Examination.
The Select Focus Group test series has been designed exactly to the demand of the Prelims examination. In Level 1 we will focus on:
- Developing theart of solving prelimsquestionsalong with developing a considerable knowledge base.
- Completechapter-wise coverageof standard books and all NCERTs (often neglected by students).
- 10Previous Years Questionswill be covered in each test, to accustom the students towards the type of questions asked by UPSC.
- Focusing onanalytical questionswith interlinkages of different dimensions.
- We will not be covering current affairs at this level, ratherfocus on the static syllabusand get it done comprehensively.
Notice: SFG 2022 - Level 1 Entrance test is now scheduled to be held on 26th Dec. 2021 and the program will start from 10th Jan. 2021. If the government allows the education institutes to reopen, then the tests will be conducted via both online and offline modes for all our centres. Otherwise, we will be conducting the tests in offline mode in Hyderabad and Patna centres and in online mode for the rest of the country. The registration for the test can be done byclicking here. |
SFG – How it works
Select Focus Group (SFG) is a small group of students who are selected by ForumIAS every year for coaching them to clear the UPSC Prelims Examination. Every single candidate selected and retained consistently in the group with Top ranks has cleared the Prelims examination in the past.
100 Students will be selected for the Select Focus Group, through the SFG Entrance Test, who will be required to report at 7AM every day 5 days a week to write an hour-long test based on a pre-planned syllabus, followed by a discussion on the same.
Candidates who are unable to make it to the SFG, will be maintained in a Reserve List, who can also write the tests. Candidates who couldn’t clear the cutoff and are unable to make it into both SFG and RLG can register for the 2nd Entrance Test.
Tests are conducted daily and results are provided within 8 hours of the test with Name and Rank list for candidates to evaluate their daily performance. On the basis of ranks, about 50% of bottom-performing students from SFG are migrated to the reserve list on a weekly basis, and an equal number of students from reserve list (RLG) are moved into SFG.
The decision of the management in this regard is final and not subject to dispute. Please note that this migration is done not keeping in mind the overall merit list but moving away bottom 50% from SFG and picking up an equal number of people from RLG.
Thus those who may be getting more than RLG students, but are bottom 50 in SFG will be moved to RLG.
Every month, the bottom 20% or so non-performing students are eliminated from the program to maintain the quality of competition.
All candidates writing the CSE 2022 are eligible to apply for the entrance test.
This year we introduce some changes as to how we conduct the SFG exam. Please note that changes that we bring are always in response to the examination pattern, the student feedback, and our own learning with respect to how to best enable a serious candidate to clear the exam.
Application Procedure
- The program will commence from 10th January 2022, admission to which will be entrance-based. The Entrance Test will be conducted on 26th December 2021 in both online and offline mode. The results of the Entrance Test will be announced by 28th Dec. 2021.
- Admission to the SFG and RLG are based on the rank of the candidate in the merit list of the SFG Entrance Test. Students can apply for the program by registering for the Entrance Test by paying a fee of Rs. 500+ GST. Candidates can register by visitinghttps://go.forumias.com/sfg22entrance. Okay sir, Will work on thisSir, initially in the SFG details also it was mentioned that SFG will be a 5 day per week plan.... When I saw the daily plan, it was scheduled to be a 6 day per week plan....
It was fine initially, but as week progressed, backlogs have been increasing, Not having much time to do anything else....
Please consider making the plan into a 5 day one....
If not, then I think I will have to push myself a little more to cover the backlogs, revise and also do optional and other things!!!I don't know how others are managing time!!!
I fully understand the stress that comes with it. But see the schedule. There are also students who are finding it less hectic. They think there is too much time for small parts of syllabus.
The time that you take is directly proportional to the preparation gap that you may have.
Can someone explain how is parliamentary privilege an instrument to keep a check on executive?Same question, how is parliamentary privilege an effective check on executive?
I am not understanding that all things are mentioned in NCERT. Are you not reading NCERTs or you are just trying to take it lightly. My point is this is the time to do NCERTs. Not later than this. If you dont do it well now, it will be difficult later.
Everything has to be done at a certain time. Do you know why some people are caught in low wages? because they did not skill up at the right time. Thing of a CS Engineer, who passed out from college. He has been on bench in TCS and things company is giving him free salary. Five years like that, and he has no skills. Now 5 years later, he wants a hike. Management fires him because he has no skills and a fresher can be hired at less cost. Now this guy will have to again join some company at fresher salary.
Reading these things that are given in the book are very important. If you do not do it now, even if you do it later, it WONT matter!
There are some people I know who have not read basic books. Now their attempts are over. Now when they join job at Byju's or Unacademy, they are reading these books for the first time. Also they will end up getting less salary. Just the same as someone who has given 1 attempt AND NOT READ THE BASIC BOOKS. The people with 6+ attempts feel entitled that they have 6+ years UPSC experience but when the technical round happens for job in EdTEch companies, they get hired at fresher salaries. This is the time to study and finish them up.
In the end and in the exam, we will solve things by guess work only. Educated guess work I should say. But right now, what is to be done from book, has to be done from the book alone.
What could be the possible reason to miss somethng verbatim from the book ( though the question is conceptual )
I haven't read NCERT in my previous attempt especially for polity thinking its all just basic stuff and of course UPSC won't ask us that.
But this time with SFG I have started reading NCERTs and couldn't agree more on what you have said sir. NCERT's are great books. Not are they just important for an exam but they provide us the conceptual understanding of a lot of things which we don't know and we assume we know them.
So I believe reading NCERT's is a very important thing and one should not skip them, moreover they are not only important for prelims but also for mains.

You are seeing the Mains paper na of past 5 years? You will need the NCERT knowledge to write a good answer. I am completely for lean material and "coaching" - which mean minimum effort maximum output. Read more books = failure. But you have to be open to the pattern. The pattern requires you to have open mind. You will have to link things like - Parliamentray Previledge = legislative control over executive = no session = no control = no Question hour= no control= big issue.

You will get a second chance in Level 2 and and a third chance in May month. Its always hectic if you are studying. You only tell me, two months back, your life was not as hectic. Were you even studying so much?

Exactly that is how I arrived at parliamentary privilege, my thinking was at privilege motion where legislature can raise a issue if ministers provides wrong information in parliament.
And I totally agree that in mains questions require deeper understanding of basic concepts to write beautiful answers and for that NCERT's are very important.

Exactly that is how I arrived at parliamentary privilege, along with that, my thinking was at privilege motion where legislature can raise a issue if ministers( or any other member for that matter) provides wrong information in parliament, which in iteself is very important for accountability and control.

Sir honestly I am loving this... waking up at 6, taking bath, going to the center and writing the test... Never before have I been so systematic and yet enjoyed the experience...Okay sir, Will work on thisSir, initially in the SFG details also it was mentioned that SFG will be a 5 day per week plan.... The only worry is if I would be able to improve upon from my mistakes and make sure I don't repeat them again, and also if I would be able to revise them again.... Plus my Optional being Mathematics, I am slightly worried....
Otherwise, I have no complaints.... But I will definitely work on this and improve myself
You will get a second chance in Level 2 and and a third chance in May month. Its always hectic if you are studying. You only tell me, two months back, your life was not as hectic. Were you even studying so much?
SFG level 1 - Jan and Feb
Can you please let know, months of SFG Level 2 and What is planned for May month?
Luckily or Unluckily, Today, I got to know that I tested positive for COVID. Mild fever etc. Will be in isolation for next 3 weeks. Probably SFG level 1 will be taken care of with this free time in isolation
Just have to plan for Level 2!!
sfg (rlg in my case ) heping in exploring different things for different people ! ncert , morning sun etc !.. from being a night owl ,used to sleep at 5 am to waking up daily at 6 am is certainly a thing i cant do without this hectic schedule ( cant even imgine )...attepmt test 2 without sleep nd failed to read even a question and have to submit without attempting any question ..got ZERO MARKS ...finally today got some decent marks and get in top performance (start waking at 5:30 to get fully fresh before 7 am ) hope the streak continues !!!
EXTRA : also start running after test ..lost 1 kg in 5 days !! (otherwise unlike kohli my weight was approching 100 )
Thats the truth. You either study now for UPSC or study for working in edutech sector after 6 attempts. But if you are going to be in this arena, you will have to study.
See this from a wider perspective. I meet students who have written 5+ attempts or even 6+ attempts. Not writing Mains. have very high sense of entitlement because of number of years. Not their fault.
Just like in service you have heirrarchy. ( One year after the foundation, this kicks in. ) . Every year there is a community meet. I see folks mingling so well. Then when the Allied people leave foundation, the IAS and IPS are taught that you are above all. When the IPS leave, the IAS is taught you are above all. You are the decision maker, everyone else has to follow orders.
In the aspirant crowd you will have a hierarchy. Someone who is given interview >Mains >Prelims.
That positions, however, change depending on when you crack the Prelims. The point is if you have not studied well ( you will have to give your life to Prelims, it kinda extracts that kind of work .) , and you look for some career in non-technical sectors such as media, law, edtech, coaching etc, there also you will see Interview >Mains >Prelims heirarchy. To avoid it, you have to say that you have not given Civils.
You take any other exam - RBI Grade B, IFoS, State PCS, you will see people from here only - the Civils people dominate the exam. In one year, I think it was CSE 2019 or 2020, I took mock of 14 people for the CS Personality test - all training in Bombay in RBI Grade B. I was like, whole aspirant crowd is now in RBI Grade b. On enquiry I found out that mostly Civils people are in there. Banking aspirants could not compete with the Civils people. You have an academy/ university in PUSA for agriculture. It hardly has anyone in IFoS. Who is topping the IFoS - the Civils people.
And like it or not, Civils is an excruciatingly dynamic exam. They have just kept the syllabus same, rest anything and everything can change. You have to be prepared to compete with the most hard working people, if not the best.
And it will require school level committments - the kind one has when they got 10 on 10 CGPA in school.
As a mentor I can tell that who will clear the exam who wont . People clear the exam when they understand the exam, or they keep studying for years. If you seethis interview, this lady has spoken every word I have ever shared in my blogs or the few times I have interacted personally. ( When the team asked her to do a talk on Forum, she was like, Ah you guys have so many top rankers in Top 50, I wont even get views! )
Sometimes, the surest way to get a candidate selected in CSE is to make him (a)taste bloodby making him studying hard (b) letting him write his first Mains - he will usually pick himself up from there (c) make him used to small time success like seeing the name in top rankers list in SFG.

I completely agree 100%.
People you are talking about with so many years of experience and sense of entitlement I am one of them. Rather I was one of them in respect to prelims atleast. In last few days I realised I failed because I was not prepared and it will take this much of hardwork which I never did in one attempt though cumulatively I did but not sufficient to cross the cut off marks.
Having said that I guess I have made up my mind to get into the mud and clean up the things myself. Thanks to SFG and its competitive environment.
@BNA1991 will you like to have a bath at 6 in patna?in winter 😁😁
People from his state have done that in Delhi, equally cold.
Was just looking at old pics.
I can be wrong, but the people sitting in the front, the one with black cap, as far as I remember is Jagat, IAS Rank 32, the person between him and the bottle got IAS Assam Cadre last year or last to last. I think his name was Rahul
So when Rahul said he got Assam, ( he dropped by to say Hi after foundation ) I was like - Oh thats a little remote. Too bad .
After a brief silence he said - Sir actually I am from Assam only. It was my first choice. ( facepalm )

Sometimes, the surest way to get a candidate selected in CSE is to make him (a)taste bloodby making him studying hard (b) letting him write his first Mains - he will usually pick himself up from there (c) make him used to small time success like seeing the name in top rankers list in SFG.
"students who have written 5+ attempts or even 6+ attempts. Not writing Mains. have very high sense of entitlement because of number of years. Not their fault. " who knowsthis better than me !! this is truth , rather a sad truth !! i failed consecutively in 4 attempts in prelims ! always had that "entitlement" ..ki 4 saal se hai is field me as if this thing is something to boast ..but whn reality hits u , then it hurts you badly !!!
thanks sir for this explosive writing today !!!
Sir, initially in the SFG details also it was mentioned that SFG will be a 5 day per week plan....
To me it seems "Life" only when its hectic. This getting ready by 7 reminds me of 10th board exam year! Loving it.
Thank You @Neyawn Sir :) for getting me back to "Life".
"Fundamental Rights cannot be taken away through promulgation of ordinance by the President. "
Following doubt is not with respect to change the correct answer of question 13 which is option A unequivocally, but just a general doubt. The statement is Option D of Q 13.
The sentence at the top, although mentioned in Laxmikant as it is, feels a bit ambiguous. Parliament can actually take away FRs without altering the Basic Structure(as per Kesvananda Bharti judgement). Since ordinance making power is coextensive with it, should it not be able to do same as well? Why such a blanket statement?
As a side note, I checked DD Basu's book. It has the following to say about this issue: "An Ordinance cannot contravene The FRs any more than an Act of Parliament." This seems to make more sense and also makes this option incorrect as well.
@Neyawn any inputs?
