[Results] Prelims 2020 Over - Gearing for 2021

Desher katha is 1&2 beyond any doubt. Verbatim is directly lifted from ishita dube.

explanation

1. Rabindranath tagore was a strong critique of the fact that there was no word in India to represent a nation so bengali scholars started using desh to signify a nation.

2. the author goes on to say that desh used by desukar was in the same context. ( nation/country)

3. the book is written by a marathi author in bengali, and he talks about the economic drain of India citing examples from RC dutt and dadabhai naroji ( so its obvious it was not about local issues)

4. The book was written in 1904 . That is early 20th century by that time due to formation on congress and rise of extremists the concept of nationalism was already present in India. Swadeshi movement was in maharastra and North too.

@himu4u2007561  though I marked 3 only . I think 2&3 is right ans. Dont worry

@Satoshi_Nakamoto they can predict as much they want but this year 45% of upsc candidates are either failing in csat or are on borderline ( my sample space is around 1000 candidates) this will always come into play

@Satoshi_Nakamoto  yes around 2-3 marks. So a very pessimistic view of cutoff would never be more than 98. But according to me its likely to be 94-96
4.9k views
@Equalizer Well I personally know 10-12 genuine people above 95 in paper 1 but below 70 in csat

@himu4u2007561 There is no confusion I agree with you. The answer to that Banian question is 2&3

@kartikeybhatt171778  There was no debate on ‘ women education’ dont make up stuff. She personally wanted to study and her husband wanted them consummate the marriage. The case was filed because she refused to get personal with her husband. It was not about her studies.

This led to wide debates on Conjugal rights , child marriage and age of consent and not on whether women should be allowed to study or not. That was limited to her personal sphere. Read sekhar Bandopadhaya

6.2k views
@Navya This reiterates  the exact point which I am saying. She was denied education ( personal) but the CASE  was about conjugal rights and age of consent. So the public debate was on conjugal rights and child marriage ( age of consent) .

@saidaraosaida28916 Desh katha is 100% right. Dont worry about that make it 96.67. And u should get in at that score.

@Equalizer How sure are u about preamble answer being D. I marked D i want it to be correct. But Shubra Ranjan mam ne meri raato ki neend uda di hai.. If she is saying A there must be solid reason for it to Be A.

similarly like in AI i marked D but the B people have more solid reasons..

@Patootie i will come from border category to 100% category if its D ..

@Equalizer  I remembered the same point made in laxmikant and marked it as D. Also toppers answer key says D and I think they should be closest with respect to correct key. But m not sure m just hoping its D

what is the likely cutoff for ews?

Shankar cutoff prediction is overrated. Reason

They got it wrong last year. When everybody knew the cutoff would be 96-104 they went with a huge range of 99-102 and still got it wrong.

Giving Clarification about Desher Katha last time. Rest its upto oneself if you want to agree or not.

The entire section of that chapter is written by ishita dube with the rise of Nationalism and The emergence of Idea of a Country aka Bharatmata.

The author says desukar used desh in the context we just Discussed ( what has she discussed in previous 2 pages?.. ans -  Idea of nation)) baad me she gives clarification that since desh over laps with place of origin like varna and jati but that was a ‘mix up’

I am attaching the 2 pages Plus see my older explanation of it.

@jagteshwar_sohal25614 Whats the issue with judicial review?

6.7k views
@Carpediem  Neither mahrastra nor Bengal. Since in Bengali there was no word to signify Nation , Bengali authors  began to use word Desh for Nation. The Nation which the author has just discussed is India ( Bharatmata) citing examples from mahrastra , telegu, punjab giving various examples on the way how artist activist and authors started associating themselves as common entity

Also A mahrastran author writing in Bengali about The economic drain of India citing examples from RC dutt and Dadabhai Naroji And in turn inspiring swadeshi activist all around India if someone think desh is specifically used for Bengal then all the best. Its just clinging to hope.

@jagteshwar_sohal25614 The keys are saying wrong coz the just do a general google search and then they see bengal word and the language bengali they conclude he meant bengal.

in history everything depends on the verbatim, what historians think about something. This is directly lifted from Ishita dube and she clearly explains this whole context in 2 pages.

I am going to post the image from real book. The actual desher katha. The title of first chapter is ‘ aamader desh’ i.e. our country. The 3rd word in first line is bharatbhoomi. 3rd line last 3 words .. ai ashoke british bharat bole... i.e this is called as ‘ British Bharat ( India)’ Last para first line ‘ Samasta bharat hindu sankya’ i.e population of Hindus in Bharat ( India)

over and out

@logan you can believe what you want even ishita dube says that the word desh in his book signifies nation i.e. Bharatmata .

i am actually surprised that even after getting the chapter from his original book and giving full proof he meant desh as bharat u want to take this further.

either you are just having fun or in desperate need of marks. No third reason

i concede defeat. Nai hoga mujhse

I will also give my final piece on Rakhmabai case

Behramji  Malabari's  1884  "Note"  on  child  marriage leading  to enforced  widowhood,  led  to  a  countrywide  debate  on  the  prohibition  of child marriage. Thissocial institution (child marriage) had by then become an issue of public debateas a result of a court case in 1884—88 (in which Rukhmabai had refused to recognise her husband'sconjugal rights. in last she  lost  the  case).  important  reformists  formed  the  Rukhmabai  Defence Committee, of which Malabari was an important member. ( Sekhar Bandopaddhya)

The Rakhmabai case was intricately interwovenwith the Age of Consent debates, since the issue of restitution ofconjugal rightswas closely tied to that of the consummation of marriage (Anagol 2010: 293). Rakhmabai’s deiance and the increasing assertiveness of the women of Maharashtra produced a clash of fears and hopes, of ‘contending conceptions of the desired social order’ (Chandra 1998: 2). While women held child marriage and arranged marriage responsible for the unhappiness of Indian wives, male discourse evaded acknowledging the existence of ‘unhappiness’ in child marriages. ( Ishita dube)

I know some of you wont agree. But still. I have doubts on preamble and AI one too.. however Since i have zero expertises in the matter i keep mum

@Biradar  Desh katha is way beyond settle with 100% proof. Tum faltu load le rahe ho. The only problem i see is the question of Tbill. Baki in all and all you will not see much difference from the coaching key..

@VivekanandS  I did a small survey of 300 people only 18 of them in were EWS. The % varied from 5-7% after 50 votes.

Considering the low cutoff in most of other exams especially in second year ( after the bubble that almost everyone is ews got burst) was so so low. You can expect even lower cutoff for ews than last year.

Last year upsc gave a 4 month window to get the ews certificate so people thinking no matter  what I will get a Ews certificate filled the form as ews, later they couldn’t produce the certificate and you a historic decline in mains cutoff for ews. This time no such provision. Expect it to be 85-87

@Biradar The  pdf which I read was not the one which had a reference. It was the original text of Desukar. In google there are two pdf .. I did came across the other one too ( which you read in most probability) .

Plus ishita dube also clearly explains us the context.

One of my bengali friends also told me that this book is in syllabus for bengali medium students in state boards and the context is all India.

4.8k views
@Biradar  The preface is of 15 pages and the First chapter written by desukar is of 56 pages. But just to make it further clear I am attaching page number 11 . I dont know if you can read bengali or not with Bengali my house helper knows. i am interpreting something from between

@Adi_das  The only disputed questions imo are TBill, Preamble and AI.. rest everyone is making a meal out of it. Theres an outside chance ki 1-2 other answers can Surprise you but thats it.

Idhar people were desperate to prove even desukar wrong 😂😂. Then science and tech ka to baat hi kya.

i myself have the second best answer to nalsa (d) judicial review (d) aadhar ( c) but they are wrong...

so if you are 93+ after leaving the 3 questions which I mentioned previously, theres a 90% probability you are writing mains.. 100% koi nai bol sakta

I hope you are right with this. In exam hall I remembered the point given in laxmikant where its written ‘’ Further,  where  the  terms  used  in  any article  are  ambiguous  or  capable  of  more  than  one  meaning, some  assistance  at  interpretation  may  be  taken  from  the objectives  enshrined  in  the  Preamble. ‘’

Baaki I dont have deeper understanding of justiciable vs legal affect etc.. so i dont know. If its D its plus 2.67

@chikuiasbano  desher katha is 1&2, Rukhmabai is 2&3. Unless upsc decides to change history..

4.7k views
@visionman I cant believe that this is a doubt 😐. Its D all day long and night...

4.6k views
@Biradar  Harrapan Horse is a debated issue. Thats why there was confusion over the same. However upsc picked the exact verbatim from a du book.

However Desher Katha and Rukhmabai are not historical debates.. Open any standard text book and search for age of consent you will probably get the word ‘ debate’ suffixed with it.

Desher katha me the man desukar himself has written about bharat bhoomi its geography, demography (22cr population) , Economic exploitation.

Rukhmabai is picked from Dube again and she clearly writes about age of consent and conjugal rights . Then sekhar bandopadhya mentions same too. These two are very big names in history.

Plzz check rankup ias on u tube it’s 100 percent 123 upsc has deliberately asked desh bcoz bacha party assume desh as nation

Yes Rankup ias correct and Sakhram Ganesh Deuskar is wrong :)

5.5k views
Desher katha it’s all 123

I too was considering 3rd wrong unless I read the page of Dube's book multiple times only to find out that It could actually be true.

"Book says he meant Nation by DESH,but the context of nation has been explained in preceding lines and it goes on to say the same concept of nation must have been prevalent in marathi as well only to corroborate Deuskar's stnd on station".

I might be wrong in my interpretation!

Yes friend you are wrong in your interpretation and its not your fault that book is very difficult to comprehend.. But a patient read will tell you what she actually meant.

Also as posted before I have checked the desher katha book itself and desh has been used for bharat bhoomi. Being from Bengal I do have an advantage there to get it checked out

Also Got it confirmed by local teachers here .

My 2 cents with regards to cutoff

Last year (2019) Everyone knew the cutoff was going to be 95-104 , thats A range of around 10 marks, Shankar ias prediction was 99-102 i.e. A range of 4 marks.  In short they covered the 40% range of probable cutoff and still got it wrong😂

which factors can lead to increase in Cut off this year

Decrease in vacancies - Yes

Tukkafication - No!!! There were many questions the answers to which was not a simple D. Also in 2018,2019 you had similar Dfication sentiments running around

which Factors can lead to decrease in cutoff

1.The toughest csat in recent history . According to a survey 46% of students are either failing or in borderline in paper 2

2. Lack of sheer number of absolute sitters.

3. Almost 2/3rd of Questions had multiple statements . People didnt had the luxury of time in this paper

4. Inflation - People despite getting a 100% conformity that their answer is not the best answer are still counting the marks for that question. This leads to overall inflation in market

5. Last year 40% of people on Telegram posted their scores tobe above 100 , the sample was 12000 votes. This year 40% of people on telegram claiming their score to be above 95

The overall cutoff has to be - 95 (+-1)

@Tokyo I have no idea . I attempted 51 maths questions only... Apart from 2-3 silly mistakes I dont think there will be a problem.

People who were reliant on Passages have to be on edge i guess. However nothing should stop one from preparing for mains.. Like someone quoted in this thread , better to be prepared and not have an opportunity, than to have one and not be prepared!!!

Now download desher katha pdf 1 st chapter of 56 pages

Now 1st page , The title of the page is Aamader Desh ( Our country) , till now we dont know whats his country is so fair enough

Now go to Second Paragraph First line second word ( You will see Bharat in bengali) in same line you will see a figure of 28 crore appx.

Diljitsaid

Some people really need to get some nuance while reading the preamble question

Both A and D options are same. However D option is an extension of A.

A just says that preamble has no legal implication

D says it has no implication independent of others

Obviously the whole basic structure is based on the ideals of the preamble.

Obviously the various legal and fundamental rights and provisos give fruition to the objectives forwarded in the preamble

Secularism , that is expressly provided for only in the preamble has been used by bommai case.

Obviously preamble has no legal implication.

But read it with the constitution it forwards only those ideals that preamble provides for.

The option A would have been correct had there been no option D. That's the case with that tourist officer question. Not with UPSC

Perfectly answered.. A would be correct without D.  But since option D is an extension of A, it is the best possible answer.

Lets hope so :|

UPSC took the pain of making a new option. ( If they picked the question from a standard question bank ) . This is not such a simple A , as many are implying using the Mizoram question paper.

Just like that Ecosystem question it might be about  which option is more correct.

I simply don't understand the point of trying to prove that your answer is correct to anonymous people. UPSC is not going to decide by looking at sources which people are quoting here. They would have already decided the answer. For Preamble question, somebody shared the exact question a day after the exam. Unfortunately, that source does not have the answer so you will have to wait till next year to see what correct answer is. Believe me, the regret of failing in the process keeps increasing with each passing stage. Here is the source of the exact Preamble question if somebody still wants to do some more research. Q.no 2

Preamble question is lifted from a book by Guwahati Professor Aparajita Baruah. She wrote the book InterPreting preamble . Uske according the answer is D. Since the book Preview is Limited I cant post the link here.

I dont want to argue on this because I know people with A have valid justification. Its might just come to Whats more correct.

Banian were Agents of Europeans, they used to do all kind of works for them. This I got wrong as I marked 3 only.
