Rostow<\/span>: mature industrial societies had moved from grand ideological conflict to <span class=\"n-term\">technocratic, pragmatic<\/span> politics; the welfare-state consensus blurred left and right (the 1955 Milan congress crystallised the mood). Bell used the phrase <span class=\"n-term\">\u201ccunning of reason\u201d<\/span> for this displacement. Critics: <span class=\"n-sch\">Herbert Marcuse<\/span> (it masks domination), <span class=\"n-sch\">C. Wright Mills<\/span> (ideology persists among elites), <span class=\"n-sch\">Louis Althusser<\/span> (ideology is constitutive of social life), <span class=\"n-sch\">Richard Titmuss<\/span> and <span class=\"n-sch\">C.B. Macpherson<\/span>. The later rise of feminism, environmentalism and post-colonialism disproved it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"n-quote\">\n<p><span class=\"n-term\">UPSC 2019 \u00b7 150 words<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"end-of-history\">End of History<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"n-sch\">Francis Fukuyama<\/span> \u2014 liberal democracy as the <span class=\"n-term\">final stage of ideological evolution<\/span> after the discrediting of fascism and communism; drawn from <span class=\"n-sch\">Hegel<\/span> and <span class=\"n-sch\">Alexandre Koj\u00e8ve<\/span>, centred on freedom, rationality and <span class=\"n-term\">recognition<\/span>. Not a claim that events stop, but that ideological evolution has reached its endpoint. Critics: <span class=\"n-sch\">Samuel P. Huntington<\/span> (conflict will be civilisational), <span class=\"n-sch\">Slavoj \u017di\u017eek<\/span> (capitalism\u2019s contradictions persist), <span class=\"n-sch\">Robert Kagan<\/span> (ambition and power endure). China\u2019s rise, democratic recession and inequality expose its limits.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"n-quote\">\n<p><span class=\"n-term\">UPSC 2017 \u00b7 brief note<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"clash-of-civilizations\">Clash of Civilizations<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"n-sch\">Samuel P. Huntington<\/span> (1993 <em>Foreign Affairs<\/em> article; 1996 book <em>The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order<\/em>) \u2014 future conflict will be <span class=\"n-term\">cultural and civilisational<\/span>, along fault lines among the Western, Confucian\/Chinese, Japanese, Islamic, Hindu, Slavic-Orthodox, Latin American and African civilisations; \u201cthe West versus the rest,\u201d with core states; revived after 9\/11. Critics: <span class=\"n-sch\">Edward Said<\/span> (Orientalist oversimplification), <span class=\"n-sch\">Amartya Sen<\/span> (people hold multiple identities, not one civilisational identity).<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line for the hall: ideologies remain indispensable because politics is never free of disputes over power, justice, identity and order. The end-of-ideology thesis did not end ideology \u2014 it only changed its terms.
