Focusing on mapping in Feb!
Khalsa->Misls->Ranjit Singh.
So we may start the answer with changing nature of gurudom, ie from hereditary to Gurdom perpetually vested in the book. Then bring the socio-political angle of Mughals and then lead to misls and regionalism.
Do you know any socio-economic angle to the evolution? Can it be said to be an assertion of the castes hitherto devoid of any political power as Sikhism attracted "lower castes"?
@AllMight a place to discuss history optional. Tag more if you know!
What strategy do you guys use for maps?
I found this book pretty helpful.
https://www.amazon.in/Map-Entries-History-Optional-2ed-ebook/dp/B087BCQ8CN
Take for e.g. we pick up capital cities for tomorrow and chalcolithic for day after. Something of that sort.
Then we share our experiences and difficulties!
Not a history optional guy but just stumbled upon this thread. Since you guys are discussing maps, I had this Chitra Mishra's map strategy pdf in my evernote as it seemed nice in terms of mapping historical locations for prelims. See if it helps, else ignore. Best wishes.
MAP-SECTION-HISTORY-PAPER-1.pdf
Have used hers and nandini maharaj's material. both are beneficial! Thanks! :)
I agree with this part about using UPINDER SINGH. What if, during revising Upinder Singh, we note down sites given on a separate page and info related to it simultaneously?
My reasoning behind this is that if we study a site within a context, it will stick better in our minds. Plus, the added benefit of ancient India revision.
@Freakhoto @Usain_bolt
World History Textbook.pdf@Usain_bolt Start with Crash Course World History, a series by John Green. When finished, watch Crash course European History, another series by the him. Take pen paper with you and just note down dates and events to build a chronology. These two series will set you up very very good to understand world history.
When done with these two, do your new NCERT and parts of a book named MCDougal and Littel(attached) according to the syllabus. It sounds overwhelming but these 4 things create such a solid base!
Then use Jain and Mathur and Norman Lowe!

What is your plan? I am currently studying medieval India from Satish Chandra. Plan is to go through the complete syllabus at least once before June.
An intensive NOTE MAKING spree. Starting with Upinder singh. The beauty of the book is such that no question, whether GS or optional, escapes this book. I get irritated when I able to faintly recall the topic but cannot reproduce it. Hence the notes.

Bhai hum do mahine yehi bol rahe hi ki arya samaj ki tarah revivalist bante hai aur Thread ko bachate hain 😂
Banate hain yaar. Exam cycle ka victim nahi banna. Have to get out as soon as possible. What are you doing at this moment?
I tried making notes from Upinder Singh on Evernote. Do not know if I am doing it correctly or not. Take a lookRevival kara jaye iska?@Devanapiyam @Duryodhan @Luffy @Freakhoto @Usain_bolt

Looks good to me. Actually, I also prepare notes like this only, but offline. My approach to notes is a summary of the chapter condensed to as short as possible without losing relevance. It is much easier than preparing thematic notes!
I am majorly focussing on GS consolidation now.
For optional, I am completely banking on my notes for ancient, medieval and modern.I have left some portions of world completely to be completed after prelims. I will write mocks after prelims. Next two months for revision+ value addition. Let's see how it goes.
This year mains appearing candidates can share their learnings.
What I observed---
GS paper 3 if focused upon can reward handsomely.
250-300 words notes for every topic is a gamechanger.
Optional paper 1 me we should focus more on Ancient, as it gives avenues for selective reading due to mandatory map question.
Has anyone made notes from Shekhar Bandopadhyay? You intend to make it now?
Hoping so, if time permits. Thoda extra hustle to karna padega agar list me naam chahiye I feel.
@Freakhoto , do you have a link to his notes?

Thanks a ton man!
Bhai there is nothing new in this. It is a typical way of asking question these days. They just pick up 2-3 topics or sub- topics, club them together and form one question. As you read further, you will be able to connect the dots better. Don't worry.
History is a study of continuity and change. While framing questions they are not bothered about specific timelines or contents of any book. Their questions try to check the conceptual clarity of the candidate on THAT issue as a whole.
For example in this question they have linked Russian revolution and emergence of USSR, two different parts of syllabus linked by common thread lenin and stalin.Although the revolution ended in 1921 but its impact didn't end there, it continued and continued till emergence of USSR as super power. This is what they are asking indirectly, how Russian revolution contributed to emergence of USSR? Their emphasis is more on latter part.
Agree 100%. I find this trend strongest in Ancient India.
How is optional going on guys?World history chal raha bhai.
What about you?
Ancient. Upinder Singh. Saath me mapping.
Btw, what was your map score and you think 45+ possible hai?My scores are not out yet so I have no idea. plus is baar acha ni hua tha! :/
Exact scores toh pata nai yar but I got 16 correct.
Considering they might be giving 2 marks to the absolute best and 1.5 to avg ones , I think 45+ is thoda zyada ambitious.
40+ is doable I guess. But for that also your points have to be top notch
There is this book called Map Practice for History Optional. Doing that. Will add self-study history material over the top. I think it will be sufficient. Thoughts?
@Usain_bolt not to spoil party . Can you share your map solution and whom have you referred for solution??
@Usain_bolt bhai ye banda mujhe pata ni kyu Optional change waali vibe bahot strong deta hai. Aisa kyu@Luffy ? :(
@Usain_bolt I have ordered this book for World History. Idk it just appealed to me. :P
Bhailog let us share our experience with this optional till now, one by one.
Kya bolti public?
I will shoot. This was my second attempt, 1st mains. Did not clear.
TO be honest, I do not think History is some mammoth task. You have to read the majority portions for the GS anyway. Plus, no CA addition in optional.
Coming to my experience, Not doing very good in the papers. But that Shivaji and Amuktamalyada one, I had more or less idea about all the questions. The quality may vary, but I knew what they were demanding and where did I read it in the books. The learnings I took away was that if I did my standard sources and PYQ properly, 280 is doable.
I have goog vibes from my coming attempt tbh.
Waise how you learn Maps ????
Let me disclose my highly inefficient way
1. Learn all the sites in Mesolithic (almost 20 sites list wise)
2. Then mark them on map again and again
3. In question , if site directly comes to mind , write else repeat the list in mind
Is this everyone is doing or Am I just doing inefficient work
I am starting by doing 5 sites a day. Chapter wise as given in the book. I write 2-3 points per site, and revise them poora din. See the map side by side. Aise I am trying to prepare 250 sites before Prelims.
Okay so my turn.
I have given 2 attempts. Got okay score in optional in 2019 but horrible in GS( two 70's score in 2 GS Papers). Since I was fresh out of college I anyway didn't have much expectations.
This year I have flunked prelims itself. I was totally devastated after this, to the extent that I completely forgot I have anything to do with UPSC. Went back home for a month and came back with mindset to begin things from scratch. Threw away all my Old notes. That was also the time I came to know about forum. I used to DM some of the great guys here like whatonly qoqo and azandhindfauz and ask them everything as if this is my first attempt.
Coming to optional, SergioRamos is right. The only reason I got decent score in my first mains was because I had handmade notes ready for most part of syllabus. This time since I had enough time, I have made my optional notes again( 3rd time).
Most of the questions are very predictable if you have read standard books well+ analysed PYQs. I believe optional is my strong area. Let's see kya hota hai.
Yes. Adding to that predictability part, in the last 7 years, if you analyse Medieval History questions- 3 common areas where questions are asked( If not regular, then every alternative year) are
Mughal Painting
18th Century India
Vijaynagara Empire
Similar is the pattern for all parts of History.

Eggzactly!!
Topics are fixed, syllabus fixed aur puchenge bhi kaha se.
Yess! Ek baar bas poore notes ban jaen na, Idk why but I feel something terrific can happen!
Waise@SergioRamos Can you kindly review that book ??
Which one?
Hey! I am doing well brother. Already into preparation mode. Revising history again. I have started with Modern India. Planning to glance over Ancient and Medieval portion soon.@Devanapiyam bhai how are you now?
This just made my day!! Welcome back Bhai! :)
Acha mitron, Map which came in the exam was political. So shall we practice mapping on a political map this time? When they change the pattern, in any form, they usually stick to it for next few years atleast. I don't think they will return to the older maps. So yes political maps are the way forward for us.
It is easy to identify places in political map that geographical. This question got me thinking that kahin issi easiness ko compensate karne k liye toh nai unhone iss saal map ki difficulty badhai?
Maybe.. maybe.. But anyway if they continue on a political one, it will be good! mapping can get a whole lot easier.
@SergioRamos kitne map ho gye aur kitne achhe se yaad hue ?? Kitne notes ban gaye@Usain_bolt kitna time laga total notes banane main .
Started Afresh from 1st June. 25 sites done as of today. Revisions will continue.
@SergioRamos yaar revision schedule bhi bata do kaise 25 sites kar rhe ho revise ??
See, daily after doing the newspaper, I sit down, mark 5 sites of the topic I am doing, make notes and move on. Din bhar me ek do bear backlog revise karte hai. I am pursuing sites passively.
@SergioRamos I am doing this for govt schemes. I want use them extensively this time.
Sme pinch! Doing this also for Govt. Schemes. Btw, which document you are using? I'm using insights ka kyunki 2021 ka bas unhi ka tha.
Can anybody suggest the source for covering the topic "Significance of the Vedic age"?
PS: I've looked in Baliyan's notes,Rau's blue books and Upinder Singh
Kaafi preachy sound Karega but you won't get topics verbatim in the books. You have already covered enough resources. You just need to interlink. :)
@Usain_bolt Gazab bored hu history padh padh ke, but padhna to padega. Thinking of going optional only till 10th July. What about you?

Han yar after a point of time one tends to get saturated. I also switch subjects in that case.
These days I am working more on GS. Optional mei coachings ke purane questions kar raha hu.
Btw do you know any historical fiction type movies? Consider me as complete nibba in Hollywood stuff
Dum Dum digga digga,
Historical fiction me, main bhi nibba-nibba! :P
@SergioRamos Garda machael baru ho😂
Rahua kay ashirvaad baatey!
Good Afternoon all,
As the discussion is about maps,Can you share your experiences, what do you do when a site is confusing. Say for instance a temple site in coastal Odisha. It can be Konark/Puri/Lingaraj. Even geographically in real they are very near. Or for instance Attirampakkam/Gudiyam Caves. Hungsi/Lingsugur. Rehmandheri/Gumla. Do you write both your options?
I think UPSC is lenient with respect to close sites.
For example- Sarai Nahar Rai, Damadama, Mahagara are all in Pratapgarh, UP.
If it asks you a neo site, you can name any 1 and get the marks.
As@Usain_bolt bhai said, Political maps are going to make it a bit easier for creating pointers using borders.
In any case, if two sites are pretty close, mark any one and you will get marks.
Hi Everyone, are you planning to join any Test Series? Does anyone have first hand experience of self study history test series?
Why not solving PYQ's together in a targeted manner and sharing inputs?
Batao@EiChan , Shuru kiya jaaye?
@Prothom Alo @EiChan pour in your suggestions on how to move ahead. Kal raat take plan bana lete hain so we guys are good to go 1st November se.
I agree with@Prothom Alo . Instead of taking one question from each part, we should take topic wise. Like start with world, finish off 2019 and 2020 questions. Then go to ancient. Aise!
World History has 28 questions in total(2019 and 20).
Shuru kara jaye kal see@EiChan ?
In this channel nikhil sir is taking answer writing . We can do it there too
Ye kaun hain?
