- GI (Geographical Indicator) as its name suggest that indication of geography or a location.
- GI is important to protect art and craft, products etc.But lack of awareness and insufficient implementation caused problem
- The Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 provides for the registration, the protection against infringement, and also protection for authorized users
- The golden yellow Muga Silk was registered as a GI in 2007
- The government has also announced the USTTAD (Upgrading the Skills and Training in Traditional Arts/Crafts for Development) scheme in Varanasi, which is expected to enhance the traditional skills of craftsmen and artisans there

- Important question: is it sufficient to granting a product GI? Will it save it from extinction?
Central theme: The GI status of a product is not utilized to its potential, the stakeholders are unaware of the value of their GI and its benefits, and the quality of these products is not standardized. Even when made by genuine persons, the quality varies

Beyond platitudes, what role can India play in this crisis? India must think a stable and peaceful Mynamar is good for India.
