    There are few such formulae, actually. This formula for a square is a generalisation of the formula for any rectangle.
    In any rectangle, if the number of squares along the length is ‘x’ and the number of squares along the breadth is ‘y’, then the total number of squares in it will be [x*y + (x-1)*(y-1) + (x-2)*(y-2) + (x-3)*(y-3) + ….] until one of the two becomes zero. For example, in a rectangle that has 6 squares along the length and 4 squares along the breadth, the total number of squares is 6*4 + 5*3 + 4*2 + 3*1 = 50.
