Q5. Swimming is categorised as a sport. Even boating. Which Pulkit did the previous year. Sports does not only mean cricket/football.
More importantly, just because he is doing music does not mean he likes music more than sports. Maybe he got an opportunity only for music this year.

In the absence of any information about sports, we cant finalise that he likes music more than sports.

Q4: There could be people outside the birdwatchers club who have cameras but no binoculars.

    @Admin
just going through past questions and had doubts here

    Question 4: – why is it (D.) instead of (B.) ?

[statement 1: only those with binoculars are birdwatcher club members , i.e. all members of the club have binoculars.
statement 2: some members of bwclub have cameras.
therefore it can be concluded from 1 & 2 that all those with a camera (some members of the club) also have binoculars (required to be member of the club) , so the answer should be (B.) ? ]

    Question 5: – Why not (B.) ?

[ statement 1: “Pulkit went… took part in”
statement 2: “This summer he is LOOKING FORWARD to…. where he HOPES TO….

from the choice of words in 1 & 2 can it not be concluded that he PREFERS music over sports, therefore (B.) ? ]

    Let me know pls!

This was one of the more controversial answers released by UPSC. Caused a lot of consternation back then.

If he likes to sing and dance, he should be doing those every summer. Because only two instances are given here, and in both he has done some activity in the summer, while in only one has he done anything related to singing and dancing, we at ForumIAS believe (C) is a better option than (D). UPSC not giving definitive reasonings for their solutions doesn’t help anyone in some cases.

UPSC’s logic could be: “Because we do not know what he did two summers ago or three summers ago, we shouldn’t claim that he likes to do some activity EVERY summer”.
But we have been told to stick to only the things that are mentioned and not form assumptions of our own. Many questions come like: “If all pigeons are humans and all humans are fish, are all pigeons fish?”. Here we are not supposed to assume and ask questions as to how pigeons can be humans. We are simply to make do with whatever data has been provided.
Similarly, in #32 Question 5, we feel that candidates are not supposed to assume what Pulkit did or did not do three summers ago. Simply answer the question by drawing inferences from what has been provided. Don’t think about the stuff that has not been provided.

If A and B are both of the same age, how can A be the eldest? He is not elder than B in this case, so the inference that “A is the eldest” cannot be drawn.
