Recently legal battle of an 18 year old girl put forth a new dimension to the concerns of TB and MDR-TB patients in India. The Indian government was taken to court when she was denied access to bedaquiline (BDQ), the wonder drug for MDR-TB (multi-drug resistant tuberculosis). It apparently seems true that little has been done for TB and MDR-TB patients as:
** government has delayed the roll-out of this drug beyong six centres. The delay has caused unnecessary loss of thousands of lives.
** consequently, thousands of Indians are denied right to health and life.
** bedaquiline doubles the chance of curing TB but with denial to its access, the disease is spreading unchecked in the country. It also risks the international community as it is an airborne disease.
** government fears that access to bedaquiline will lead to antibiotic resistance. Of course, some degree of responsibility in using it is recommended but India’s decision to use BDQ only on worst cases will lead to spreading it quickly. According to a data from South Africa, it shows that the sooner a person is offered access to it, the better is the outcome.
** the management policies are also not efficient as implied by the reports that India continue to be the place where the highest rate of TB and MDR-TB occurs.
With the recent highlight of conditions of TB patients in India, one hopes that government comes to realise the concerns and plights of the patients who have been left out.
