[Solution] – Friday Science Quiz #6

Good morning everyone, How is your Preparation going for UPSC IAS Prelims examination 2016? Are you on right track. Check your answers to quiz attempted by you yesterday.

[Solution]

Q.1) Surface of the copper vessels and utensils turns black with time. It is the result of
a) Reaction of copper with the Nitrogen
b) Reaction of moisture with the copper
c) Oxidation of the copper to copper oxide
d) Due to presence of carbon dioxide in the air

Ans-[C]
Explanation-This is due to the formation of copper oxide in the presence of oxygen in the air. Copper is said to be oxidized in this way.

Q.2) Consider the following statements:
1. Gain of electrons by atoms, molecules or ions is also known as Reduction.
2. Gain of Hydrogen by molecules or chemical substances is also known as Reduction.

Which of the above statements is/are correct?
a)1 Only
b)2 Only
c)Both 1 and 2
d)Neither 1 nor 2

Ans-[C]

Explanation– This is the definition of Reduction.
Reduction is gain of electrons, gain of hydrogen or loss of oxygen whereas oxidation is loss of hydrogen, loss of electrons or gain of oxygen.

Q.3) Consider the following statements:
1.Hydrogen gas is flammable and combustible gas.
2.Oxygen is non flammable, combustible gas.

Select the correct statement using the codes given below.
a)1 Only
b)2 Only
c)Both 1 and 2
d)Neither 1 nor 2

Ans-[A]
Explanation– Oxygen is the non flammable and non combustible gas. Oxygen only helps in combustion.
Hydrogen gas is a flammable combustible gas, it burns with a pop sound.

Q.4) Consider the following statements:
1.Nettle is a herbaceous plant whose leaves secrete Methanoic acid.
2.Formic acid is found in the stings of ants and bees.

Select the correct statement using the codes given below.
a)1 Only
b)2 Only
c)Both 1 and 2
d)Neither 1 nor 2

Ans-[C]
Explanation– Nettle is a planet whose leaves secrete Methanoic acids which when touched gives a stinging effect. This acid is also found in the stings of bees and ants. Formic acid is another name of Methanoic acid.

Q.5) Which of the following are uses of Bleaching powder?
1. Used in the textile industry
2. as an oxidising agent
3. for disinfecting drinking water.

Select the correct answer using the codes given below.
a) 1 and 3 only
b) 3 only
c) 2 and 3 only
d) 1, 2 and 3

Ans-[D]
Explanation– Bleaching powder is used in:
1. for bleaching cotton and linen in the textile industry, for bleaching wood pulp in paper factories and for bleaching washed clothes in laundry;
2. as an oxidising agent in many chemical industries; and
3. for disinfecting drinking water to make it free of germs.

Q.6) Consider the following statements:
1. Gravity does not have role in the deciding direction that plant grows in.
2. Growth of pollen tubes towards ovules is result of geotropism.

Select the incorrect statement using the codes given below.
a)1 Only
b)2 Only
c)Both 1 and 2
d)Neither 1 nor 2

Ans-[C]
Explanation-Environmental triggers such as light, or gravity change the directions that plant parts grow in. These directional, or tropic, movements can be either towards the stimulus, or away from it. So, in two different kinds of phototropic movement which is movement influenced by light, shoots respond by bending towards light while roots respond by bending away from it.

The roots of a plant always grow downwards while the shoots usually grow upwards and away from the earth. This upward and downward growth of shoots and roots, respectively, in response to the pull of earth or gravity is, geotropism. Thus gravity has a role in the direction that plant grows in.

Growth of pollen tubes towards ovules is due to chemotropism.

Q.7) Fly Ash is used in
1. Mine reclamation
2. Concrete production
3. Cosmetics
4. Toothpaste
5. Stabalisation of soft soil
6. Application on rivers to melt ice

Select the correct answer using the codes given below.
a) 1, 2, 3 and 5
b) 3, 4, 5 and 6
c) 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6
d) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

Ans-[D]
Explanation– Fly ash is used in the cement industry, brick manufacturing, construction of road embankment, saline and soil waste management, agriculture, cosmetics, toothpaste, horticulture, forestry and mine filling.

Q.8) As per latest theory on cosmos, Consider the following.
1.Dark energy
2.Dark matter
3.Matter which we can see

Arrange them in decreasing order  as fraction of universe is:
a)1 > 2 > 3
b)2 > 1 > 3
c) 2 > 3 > 1
d) 3 > 2 > 1

Ans-[A]

Explanation-Dark matter is invisible matter which is holding the galaxies together. In the accelerating and expanding universe, Dark energy  is an unknown form of energy which is hypothesized to permeate all of space, tending to accelerate the expansion of the universe. 70% of the universe is dark energy, 25% dark matter and 5% is just what we can see.

Q.9)Consider the following statements:
1.Protons are fundamental particles
2.Gravitational forces does not apply to elementary particles.

Select the incorrect statement using the codes given below.
a) 1 Only
b) 2 Only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 nor 2

Ans[C]
Explanation- Protons are not fundamental particles. Fundamental particles are those which are smallest particles and which make the protons and neutrons. These fundamental particles can not be broken down into other smaller particles. Quarks and electrons are fundamental particles.

Gravitational forces applies to all particles. But as their mass is very small, this force is very very small and negligible.
