Explanation
Wetlands are areas where water is the primary factor controlling the environment and the associated plant and animal life. They occur where the water table is at or near the surface of the land, or where the land is covered by water. They are now considered to be distinct ecosystems with specific ecological characteristics, functions and values.

Ramsar Convention on Wetlands which was signed in Ramsar, Iran in 1971 define wetlands as: “areas of marsh, fen, peatland or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt, including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six metres”.

Explanation– Water temperatures above than normal often results in coral bleaching. When water is too warm, corals expels the algae (zooxanthellae) living in their tissues causing them to turn completely white. When a coral bleaches, it is not dead. Corals can survive a bleaching event, they are just under huge stress.

Ocean acidification slows down the growth of coral. Ocean absorbs one-third of the atmosphere’s excess carbon dioxide. This makes the ocean acidic which reacts with limestone skeleton of corals and dissolves them. In order for a coral reef to grow, it must produce limestone at a rate that is faster than the reef is being eroded. This slows down the growth.

Endemic species are species which are unique to a defined geographic location.

    haha, places like bihar have like 30 rivers , almost all bigger than punjabs one . Dont get confused by punjab brand of 5 rivers .

    As per wikipedia n other sources, ocean acidifivation due to CO2 is also responsible for coral bleaching

    As the water has high specific heat, there is a small temperature range..
    So coral and zooxanthllae are adapted to that range.

    Anything that goes beyond then it disturb there symbiotic relationship.

    Ocean acidification just decrease the Rate of formation of calcium deposit.
    Excess co2 is converted to carbonic acid and then to bicarbonate ion ..on liberation of H+.

    Thereby reducing the ph..level..

    Ocean acidification retards the growth of coral build up

    Coral bleaching is loss or expulsion of symbiotic dinoflagellates living within the tissue of the coral. Eutrophication doesn’t lead to Coral bleaching. It causes lowering of coral resistance and greater susceptibility to diseases like white band disease of coral. Rather increase in the nutrient in the water through eutrophication can lead to enhanced algal growth on reefs, crowding out corals which in future may degrade the ecosystem.

    Read the statement carefully and explanation given. Statement says, “Excess greenhouse gas especially CO2 absorbed by seawater causing ocean acidification dissolved the algae in the coral causing bleaching”. Acidification dissolves the skeleton of coral and not algae! How come you people are calling it as correct? Algae is not made of calcium carbonate which will dissolve in acidic water. Clearly statement is wrong. explanation doesn’t say that acidification is not a cause. It clearly says it solows down the growth of coral. When growth is slow, algae obviously wont’ thrive much. Moreover, this is still under investigation and research and no concrete link has yet not been found linking bleaching with acidification. Don’t get confused, read statement carefully again.

    I have doubt whether eutrophication will also lead to coral bleaching.

    Q-7 As punjab is called Land of 5 rivers. AlThough we cannot divert water of indus jhelum and chenab yet doubt is there as it can still use water of ravi beas sutlej..Following line is from livemint.
    Rather than extending surface water irrigation to unirrigated regions, policymakers began providing incentives for groundwater extraction.

    Please clear in Question 2…. the image which you have shared explains the absorption of CO2 as one of the major reason for coral belaching then why the correct answer is A?
