Also i was confused.it was a wave right. Being from mechanical we have always studies waves only when the ends are bounded i.e ends must be at zero. U(x,0) = x implies u(L,0) = L. I didnt get that. Maybe its basics that i missed as i had fucked in the first paper.

Also two students from maths optional didmt show up in paper 2. The invilagator was really puzzled

@quasiwin I am not changing my optional honestly. For some reason, I am more confident about Maths optional now.
Surely, the questions were relatively tough and lengthy but except few mistakes my optional papers went better than last time (Given the fact that I had tonsillitis during Mains plus I had not done topics like Modern, FD, S&D and Mech properly last time).

What made the paper difficult was the inclusion of lengthy questions in compulsory part. Ex: The cylinder and rod (asked earlier in IFoS 2020). One can say such questions come from PYQs but what one forgets is that we have to get to the right answer in limited number of steps within 10 mins or so.
So I think rigorous practice of PYQs will help in Maths. For Modern this time, I just did PYQs properly and I was able to solve almost all the questions easily (except the principal ideal one because no time left).

Also imo, I have been studying upsc maths since my undergrad (2nd year 2017-18) so changing optional now is a huge headache because you would have to start fresh and then gain expertise.

@tedmosby , how much correct attempt do you have paperwise ?

Agree with you, in P1 most questions were either lengthy or calculation error prone.

P2 , Modern Algebra was the bottleneck otherwise non compulsory selection was tough. ( Q4 - oscillation not a known term, Q7 - Mechanics tough one, wave Q non rigid boundary, Q8- Navier )

Overall , selection was key in both papers. Which ones did you pick ?

I picked 3,4,6 in P1 and 2,3,6 in P2

@achchedin total attempt - 440 (Correct attempt- Paper-I: ~180; Paper-II: 160 acc to keys of IMS and Mathocrat).

Again, I am not considering partial attempts here. I made diagrams and wrote some initial equations for which I am counting them as 0.

Also kuch jagah toh aissi *facepalm* silly mistakes karri hai.

Question choice: P1: 3,4,8; P2: 2,3,7

Pretty decent attempt. What could be scaling factor this time? For average difficulty it's generally 0.75 combined.

Most difficult than all other GS papers.
But my answers seemed better than last year's GS2. But my prep was also a bit heavy this time. So maybe that might've been a factor.
But yeah. As compared to other GS papers, this one was most offbeat.

@Proton9 honestly, the difference will be made on the basis of who is studying from.Oct to December.

You see students like Anuradha ( ifos rank 3) this year and Natasha goyal ( 175 rank , 5attempt, first mains ), they got out of the rut because they were studying during this time.

If anyone has maths and is thinking of changing this is the best time. Once December is gone, we are done!

Saying things like go as per your passion, every paper is scoring , all papers are equal is for YouTube talks.

There are more than 20 folks I know who did well changing large optionals.

@Davidjones ,

Dost, luckily it was achcha din. Attempted 480 ( Getting 220+ correct in each paper )

But again would say , P1 was lengthier, error prone and In P2 modern algebra was bottleneck.

For me, It was case of "Doodh ka Jala chach bhi phonk phonk kr pita hai ". Got 227 in maths last year due to time mismanagement in last month before mains and panicked after P1. But this year did rigorous practice , gave around 50+ tests. Used calculator extensively to ensure high accuracy.

Overall, I felt question selection was key this year, some question would take 40+ mins to ensure correct attempt like Q2 in P1 but some can be done in 25 mins if comfortable with concepts like Q4 in P1.

In both papers , had 25 mins for last non compulsory tough question but luckily picked right one and didn't panic like last year.

@Master I really don't know but it won't be 0.75 (That scaling factor is too high). Someone said that the scaling factor for P1 would be 0.79 and P2 would be 0.9 (Found it online on a group).
