@Villanelle Answer says C. Didn't explain though.
Okay. I'm still not entirely sold on this but, since the option doesn't take into account the democratic part at all. Question could have easily asked about what does mixed economy entail with regards to India and it would have still been C.
The meaning given in option C takes precedence only when Democratic Socialism is contrasted with State Socialism or Communist Socialism, which entails complete nationalization of means of production. Outside of the context, Democratic Socialism would first mean achieving for socialist goals through non violent, democratic means. Very possible question was picked straight from Laxmikant, hence C is the answer.
Does democratic socialism support the notion of natural inequality? Wouldn't constitutional democracy with natural inequality be liberalism?
Tbh, socialism seeks to do away with only social inequalities like unequal distribution of resources, wealth, equal opportunity and so on. It cannot remove natural inequality which will continue to exist on account of myriad physical differences. BUT, that said I get your point. Definitely over-thought this one.
This info is from Rajya Sabha website. It doesn't clarify wheather nominated RS members can become ministers or not but it says it has not happened till now.
This is a quora post which gives example of nominated members of lok Sabha who went on to become ministers.
This is The wire article related to Uddhav Thakrey case. It says nominated state council members are not prohibited legally to be ministers but ideally that shouldn't happen.
So to answer your question:-
At central level ONLY nominated members of Lok Sabha ( not RS) can become ministers.
At state level nominated members of both Councils and Assembly can become ministers.
Hey, taking all what you said into account, what I concluded is that actually nominated members of both houses can go on to become ministers, because Constitution or any another statute doesn’t specifically exclude them. 😅
The fact that no nominated members have been inducted into the Council til date, or the various reasons on why they are not par with elected members in all aspects - does not negate the fact that they are still perfectly eligible to become ministers.
If I’m not mistaken approaching SC for violation of FRs comes under writ jurisdiction. Original jurisdiction only covers cases of Centre v/s state(s), and state(s) v/s state(s) conflicts.
Writs for enforcement of FRs are also under Original Jurisdiction, as someone can approach the SC in first instance and not by way of appeal. So Original, albeit not Exclusive as one can approach HC too.
@Curious_souls when some glasses are not goggles and all glasses are gases, then it has to be that some gases are not goggles. Still I think it should be 2 only.
With reference to the idea of a federation, which of the statements given below is/are correct?
1. Parliamentary supremacy is a necessary feature of a federal government.
2. A federation essentially means that it is an indestructible union of states.
Select the correct answer using the code given below:
D
Laxmikant-- " The federation is a Union, because it is indestructible ". From this statement I thought answer should be "D" but according to SFG test, answer is B.. Wanted to know whether given answer is incorrect or notExplanation from SFG test : A federal state is a fusion of several states into a single State in regard to matters related to common interests. Both the federal and state governments draw their authority from the Constitution. In such a federation, a component state has no right to secede from the federation at its will. This feature distinguishes a federation from a confederation
Source: D D Basu, Introduction to the Constitution of India, chapter 5, page no. 52
Sounds right. Should be B.
The answer is given in Laxmikanth too. India doesn't have a federal system and that's why Article 2 or 3 can be used to alter the boundary/area/name of the states =>Not indestructible.
Only when they are indestructible, there can be federation doctrine being established in a country.
However, the correct sentence should have been "union of indestructible states"
Article 2/3 pertain to the nature of states and not the union as a whole. Remember “indestructible union of destructible states”. India is a federation.
@Villanelle Is it necessary for a federation to be indestructible in theory?
Not sure but, most sources seem to be of this opinion. Essentially, a federation offers no right to secede, they say. While a confederation does.
Q26 My bad. Not the first silly mistake I committed in this paper.
Q37 I see.
Q58. So, what did you mark for this?
In 58, one need not go that deep. Simply think along the lines of western vs Indian secularism. When there is no strict separation of state and religion, then assuming religion is merely a private individual matter does not add up.
Q42@Shailputri :P
I dont know whether this can be considered UPSC authentic (US EIA).But this mentions : no thailand
They’ve just not labelled it here. Usually we study study straits in the context of which two bodies they join, or which two countries they life between of/separate. Here they changed it to “around”. Bas.
But like the other person said, don’t sweat it. I don’t think such minute detail questions are going to be asked in actual exam.
The letters from A to Z are numbered from 1 to 26 respectively. If GHI = 1578 and DEF = 912, then what is ABC equal to?
(a) 492
(b) 468
(c) 262
(d) 246cant figure this one
The sequence is just twice of each group’s position
so ABC is 123x2 so D
lol thats what i thought.Q 31 - D because 13 and 17 Both has 1 and 1 remainder and it is asking for uniqueQ32 - A
What's the point of having such a huge coaching center basic question ke answer galat de rakhe hai

ABC=123*2=246
PS- I don't think these type of questions come in CSAT is it a PYQ?
2020 ka hai shyad :P
2019 paper...two answers in official UPSC keys really bamboozled me:
1. When a State Legislature does not have a rule on a particular matter, itfollows theLok Sabha rule on that matter. This statement is correct.
2. The Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2010 were framed by the Government of India based on the recommendation of Ramsar Convention. This statement isnot correct.
No discussions required.....UPSC ne keh diya toh keh diya. Just sharing. Ratt lo bass
Abhi this year there will be more of such answers
I have some queries 😅 all have a same theme
1. Barring basalt flows, shield volcanoes are the largest. So if a statement says shield volcanoes are the largest volcanoes it is to be marked correct or not?
2. Same thing with speaker being ex-officio prez of all parliamentary forums except the one on population, or all notices lapsing on dissolution except notices for introduction of bills. And probably a dozen other such cases.
If a statement says, all notices lapse on dissolution, it’s to be taken as right or wrong?
~
I mean how do we know if a statement is just saying something generally, or we have to account for all the minute exceptions…
Similarly for this question as well first we need to put e in the last so the initial 4alphabet abab similarly last four alphabet eded are there and the for the rest of the sequence count the number of b d and c you will find b 3 times c 3 times and similarly d 3 times hence we need to have b c d all one times hence answer would be b c d e.
Why won’t it be c? ababa, bcbcb, and so on?

Yar yeh bta do koi please
Yar yeh bta do koi please
Option C looks right. It forms a pattern. Option d doesn't.
The trick mentioned above fails because here a and e are not equivalent. On completing the sequence there are 3 a's and 2 e's. The sequence is cyclical so the number of letters will match only if we take it to zazaz. Then there will be 5 letters each.
The process in such questions is to
1) count the number of letters in the phrase. The factors of that number are the possible length of the repeating units. Here there are 20 letters. So possible units can be of length 2,4,5 or 10. 2 and 10 can be ignored. So it's either 4 or 5
2) substitute the options and see if there are repeating units of the needed length forming.
This should in most cases give the right answer.
Yep. Right. Thank you :)
What exactly is meant by the 1st statement, anyone? Executive power on matters in concurrent list resides with states. So is it possible to explicitly say that executive power of one is superior to another? Or am I interpreting the statement incorrectly?
257. Control of the Union over States in certain cases
(1) The executive power of every State shall be so exercised as not to impede or prejudice the exercise of the executive power of the Union, and the executive power of the Union shall extend to the giving of such directions to a State as may appear to the Government of India to be necessary for that purpose.
I feel they based it on this?

I don't think the provision would mean what shankar interpreted.
Haan, I kinda agree they seem to have taken too much liberty in framing of options
Two tankers contain 850 litres and 680 litres of kerosene oil respectively. Find the maximum capacity of a container which can measure the kerosene oil of both the tankers when used an exact number of times
what does this term "when used an exact number of times" exactly mean? i cant understand the question
HCF? I think it means a no which is a factor of both
Considering the 2020 cutoff , what number of questions would be ideal to attempt ?
Last time attempted almost 92 , was out by 0.67 marks , I was speculating ideal attempts given difficulty level similar to 2020 ! Any insights ?
Not going with any pre set number but I feel attempting less can also be risky because vague questions me you can never really assess how many you’ll end up marking correct (as per the actual keys). Around ~90 hi probably, for me...

Looking at my score it made me feel I should have attempted less , but I second you on not attempting anything less than 90 .
If you feel so, then maybe try with less attempts. Truth is we can never really know until the paper is infront of us 🤷🏻♀️
BSP toh national party hai na, how is it possibleThe ECI has also stipulated that a symbol reserved for a state party in any state will not be reserved for another state party in any other state (with effect from December, 1997), or be a free symbol anywhere else
does this mean symbol can't be used anywhere in country?
No. BSP symbol in UP is same as that of Asom gana parishad in Assam.
BSP has elephant symbol reserved in all states and UTs except Assam.

Higher amount of nitrogen is to be applied for mineralization of organic matter.
Organic matter increases due to less mineralization.
Wrt Zero Till - shankarias
What do these statements mean ?
2nd statement: Mineralisation decomposes organic matter into inorganic forms. So with less Mineralisation, organic matter would increase.
1st: not sure, but nitrogen feeding bacteria would require nitrogen to break down organic nitrogen compounds from dead remains into inorganic nitrogen (ammonification). Maybe woh?
agreeI was talking about externalities which make this exam more complex for aspirants, the FOMOthere wasn't need of such long post, mains k time chal jata :P
This is true. Imagine if no one was reading PTs or doing so many tests, we all would have had so much less burden.
We called this upon ourselves, to some extent.
Funny thing is, ab toh even sticking to the above things is the bare minimum and there would be so many people who would go beyond that - with the countless revision programmes and what not running. Overkill mode.
For space, I feel UPSC is not focusing on 'smaller' missions like going to Mars and Moon. It's going for more 'exotic' missions like e-LISA which is a Gravitational wave observatory just like LIGO which was asked couple of years ago. So, that maybe narrows down a little bit. What are the important topics for Science & Tech? Please comment what you feel!
- Nuclear treaty and nuclear Energy- Biotech (Gene editing, GM crop, RNA, DNA, embryo twinning)
- Space related ( Perseverance, Chandrayaan, Debris)
- IT (5g, AI, Quantum, Blockchain, data security related)
- Health - VAccine
-Energy( geothermal, Hydrogen gas, fuel cells, solar )

Repeal of progressive farm laws proves how India was rightly called a 'soft state'. I hope this doesn't set a precedent for aggressive street behavior.
Agreed to some extent.
But doesn’t it also tell us of the importance of consensus building and limitations of top-down approach to law making in a democracy in general…
