Sometimes, when the scramble for a high-flying job is fierce, the backers of the top seed prefer to have the chair-occupied by a boob, rather than the hated rival. The fool thus emerges a compromise candidate and is seen as a no-threat nonentity. It is another matter that he soon gives evidence of a native shrewdness and a frightening dexterity in retaining his limpet-like attachment to the chair.
Thus the fool is somewhat like a guerrilla fighter, an invisible enemy, who chooses his ground and vanquishes a superior strength through subterfuge. When he emerges from the bush, he leaves his competition open-mouthed with dismay. All they can do at that belated stage is to be sure they do not swallow a fly.
