4-5 most essential things

1. Read the newspaper daily (economy/businees, international, science, policy etc). Whichever is your preferred one, read it daily.

2. Practice answer writing daily, depending on appearing for mains/prelims. You may solve subject specific (say history etc) or current affairs specific (insights), as you wish. Answer writing helps you stay in the exam mode and prevents from slipping into graduation mode.

3. Play a sport / practice basic stretching etc. Helps you with your posture, digestion, mental make up etc. Being healthy everyday is your responsibility and a part of your preparation.

4. Your optional subject should definitely be a part of daily routine. Either answer writing or revision.

5. Meet your friends/peers daily over chai/discussion etc. Eliminates boredom, widens vision, enhances knowledge.

This is good enough for 8-9 hours of study. Rest is upto your motivation level. Some days would be good, others bad.

Why suggesting optional to three times prelims failed candidate? In Jan end? He is not ckearingbprelims because he is not studying for prelims. Basically what you have told him to study EVERYTHING which means he will study nothing.

Just asking. Not yelling. Quickly typing.

If you have not been able to clear prelims for last three attempts just leave everything aside and focus on prelims (both gs &csat),make a daily plan stick to it and solve test it will help you to develop the problem solving skills

@Neyawn It's ok. Feedback is super important.

What I have described is an ideal day, which needs to tailored according to the exam type(prelims/mains/interview). Of course you shouldn't practice answer writing for mains in January, when you are close to Prelims. I understand this is obvious. But good that you pointed it out.

2. I still think that one must not leave options completely, and continue to study till 3 months before prelims. This is to keep you in touch. An hour or so is ok.

3. I had failed prelims two times and I did not know what to do. But I cleared the next 3 prelims with very good marks. May be I will write a longish post just for prelims, things that worked for me.

I am available for one on one discussion regardibg it on gmail: anandshankarmishra@gmail.com

Thanks for the feedback.
