General gyaan:
Read each question multiple times, har question be fight till death karna hai, tabhi first choice service milegi, warna fir line me lagna padega aur fir motivation high rakhna bhi tough task ho jaata hai

@Kira0705said inMains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread:

same here bro wrote very general avg level ans could remember only bits and pieces , how did you attempt low inflation steady gdp , what was expected ans?

Don't know what's the expected answer but this question was manageable, shown both sides, how low inflation good(disposable income increase) and also bad(hurt farmers, lack of demand etc) similarly for growth with jobless growth etc

Ultimately no point in worrying too much over GS, agar hona likha hai to hokar rahega.

Last time I flopped in GS (though I thought it went decent) but still got top 200 rank, thanks to optional(didn't think it went exceptional) and interview

@Valar_morghulisat least copied from a better source than insights secure

@Valar_morghulisYeah, Vision's simple way of asking "Explain causes, consequences and solutions" had seriously dumbed down the brain.Forum's test series was a bit on UPSC line but this year GS2 paper was on a completely different level.I still cant understand what few questions were demanding.

What is the general opinion about Anthro paper 2?

3.2k views

@RaillifePaper 1 reminded me of 2017 paper 1.I think you need to put in 1- 2 extra novel points to pick up that extra mark in each question as competition has increased much more since then

3.1k views

What examples did you all write in tribal unrest due to incompatibility with nation-state(Anthro paper 2) ?

3.1k views

@Bodhgayapretty decent coverage

3.1k views

This year's GS 2 and 3 looked like being deliberately designed to make Current affairs coaching industry redundant. I still remember my first mains in 2017 and with fraction of the current knowledge I thought I had done pretty well. This year no clue.

@Dijkstrathn no use of ca classes ?

I don't know who is Santosh sir.
As of now there is overemphasis on CA ,which I think ,is not required. Mains365 is enough to cover the major topics and the rest of CA topics nobody can guess

@DijkstraI have very similar experience, how did you score in gs2 and gs3 in 2017?

105 in GS2
116 in GS3

@Biryanimafia_Thanks and good luck to you too.

@Champaksaid inMains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread:

That's it. Nothing else needed for above average marks. The trouble begins when you feel the need to decorate your answer with case laws, irrelavant examples, quote or flowery language.

SC cases are important to score high marks, that's what I've learnt from many GS2 high scorers. You never know, you might be scoring well in the governance and/or IR section as compared to polity.

But mentioning cases in every question is impossible(for example, the harmonious construction question)

"cooperation among various service sector " bhai isme NGO/SHG koi kaise guess kar sakta hai? These sort of questions bring in extra layer of unpredictability in the exam.

No point of crying now , I bet many who would end up in top 10 would have also taken service sector literally

There is a wide divergence is the view point of coaching guys vs UPSC examiner. They are people with very basic knowledge and look for simple points directly addressing the core , all the hi-fi uber analysis is likely to be irrelevant if the examiner isn't aware.
I mean Kataria got 117 in GS3 (near highest) and got only 60s in vision should give you an idea.

There is no need to be demoralised by the answers posted here or anywhere else, people usually post answers which they have written better and in the end there may not be any correlation in the marks obtained and the answers posted, I've been observing this for past 3 years.

Some times average content with decent presentation and structuring ends up amongst the highest scores, for example 2017 rank 6.

"During IRS training at NACEN, most south indian batchmates have forged a coterie and we sometime have intra-batch friction on regionalist and linguistic issues. Especially on the use of hindi on batch's unofficial whatsapp group. One kannadiga batchmate went as far as fighting with the course coordianator, who is a local officer from Haryana, over use of hindi for instructions and training documents. It was a very shameful event indeed.

Hope all such people, everywhere in India, see the generous donations Indians from all states made for Kerala and realize that linguistic and regionalistic chauvinism are just a figment of their fucked up imagination."

@pmishra997125Switching optional after scoring 309 is a ridiculous idea. Just because rank 45 had 362 does not mean such scores would be replicated in future, I'm willing to bet that anthro average score will only go down in future.

Also rank 45 had socio as her previous optional, which would have provided massive help in paper 2.I've seen her mock test copies and she had pretty solid mugging up capacity with a deep repository of thinkers.

2.6k views

@HermioneGrangerI've seen her Anthro copies, they seemed to have a heavy tinge of sociology gyaan in them.

@ChampakSeen many people who took a stand contrary to board but never saw this low a score, what exactly went wrong? took a controversial stand? politically opinionated? I'm really curious.

Just glanced through GS papers, top 70 ka aim based on GS to mushkil lag raha, interview hi ab kismat badal sakta hai.

@sat_009bhai case studies are not absolute essential, if you have addressed the core then that is all that matters, I have also written few suboptimal 10 and 15 markers

2.6k views

@sat_009I had the same feeling, wrote stratification and hierarchy completely wrong and 2 markers were almost irrelevant but still got decent marks

I personally feel that question attempted matters, archaeology questions if well attempted boosts the score

2.6k views

@zombielandLevi Strauss wale me 0 to nahi milega, at max 3-4 marks ka damage hoga, can easily be compensated else where, alliance theory kam log hi recall kar pae hoge, most would have revolved around binary opposition etc

Aur 1 10 marker wrong is not a big deal.

"With reference to the somatoscopic and morphometric characteristics commonly
used for racial classification, make critical comments as to whether ‘Race’ is a valid
concept."
In this question the author has taken a very difficult approach of taking each criteria and pointing out exceptions, it may work for few like heigh/skin colour but difficult to stretch it to 5-6 criteria.

"“Applied human genetics has come to touch every sphere of human life.”
Discuss in light of recent advances in molecular anthropology."
In this question I've taken a broader approacher focused on applied human genetics while the answer suggests that molecular anthropology is restricted to ancestral linkages, not sure till what extent my answer is appropriate?

2.6k views

@sat_009yeah it is unrealistic to expect such knowledge heavy answers reproduced in mains, in past 2 years i’ve gone through nearly every topper copy/notes and almost all of them write standard stuff (with variation in presentation and few case studies)

@zombielandMy answer is on similar lines

Has anyone seen Vinay sir's analysis of mains(InsightsonIndia) ? He is doing a lot of fear mongering regarding people with left/liberal outlook being punished in GS1/Essay/Interview.

Many people did have unexpectedly low score in GS1 , according to him it was the direct result of the examples cited in communalism question.

2.5k views

@sat_009Actually in such subjective exams your opinions does have a tendency to lean either right or left, However I too disagree with insights analysis. According to him in the biased media essay we should take a stand that Indian media is not biased and is not a threat, which I find quite ridiculous and irrelevant to the theme of the essay.

2.5k views

@Biryanimafia_Yeah man it was pretty obvious why this topic was asked.

People don't post their marksheets because they don't want to blow their anonymity, it should not be assumed that they are making stuff up to impress random people on the internet.

@zombielandThey might apply some moderation formula to bring down the scores, I remember in 2017 pub ad guys were delighted with easy papers but it did not translate into high scores(very few 300+).

2.7k views

@zombielandbutchering in the sense of Pub ad(2012) and Geography(2015) will not likely happen but 330+ scores might decline

Harsh fact is society judges you on the number of years spent on CSE, what@bevancomis saying is the common perception, so I don't think it's fair to be hostile towards him.

Can we pay our gratitude and thank you to UPSC for checking nearly 1 lakh copies in 60 days and provide us objective result. Why Other state PSC don't learn from UPSC, In many states results are pending for 4-5 years. Also UPSC provides us prelims result within 40 days.
BIG THANKS FROM MY SIDE for this crucial organization of great nation.

Worst scenario: UPSC loses case and then goes to HC, ek aur week maan lo gaya fir.
I think it's safe to be mentally prepared for only a 15 day gap between the result and start of interviews.

@NadigVinayAs long as IAS is your first preference, service preference almost never invites question, based on my interaction with numerous people who preferred IFS/IRS over IPS.
