Mains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread

@CaesarIt took me 4 minutes to divide the service sector question into parts by that time it was too late to actually answer it

2.1k views

Is it just me or is there a general consensus that UPSC is turning tables on mains in a manner similar to what it did with prelims. Making the paper more ambiguous, people are unable to even come to a conclusion with regards to what the answer would be.

2.2k views

This is in context of the economy right ? I think the question was seeking a governance perspective@K_9

2.2k views

This is what I was also wondering. In any case this years mains was an example of how UPSC is attempting to make coaching irrelevant, a couple of my geography optional friends were also telling me how their paper was coaching and topper funda proof@Shubz

2.2k views

Question kaafi ambiguous tha, discuss karne ka faayda hai agar UPSC ka changing pattern decipher karna hai to@K_9

2.2k views

Internal security and International Affairs are fairly predictable but the same is not true for any other topic anymore including disaster management and society type topics. It can hardly be understood as a normal change in patterns, UPSC is on to something now.@ranyo_asoka

2.1k views

Haan but pehle bhi more or less kuch bakar aa jati thi Ir me, for ex the Mc Bride committee In 2016 then the Ecosoc question in 2017, so there has always been a tendency of making IR random@paranthapijja

2.1k views

Why the private vs public sector aspect?@dr-ahmednaaz8567

2.1k views

How have people attempted all questions in paper 2??
@ranyo_asoka

2.1k views

I left them for the end and realised that it was probably a mistake@paranthapijja

2.1k views

Arre waah ye hui na baat@paranthapijja

2.1k views

Which optional ?@ManchesterUnited

2.1k views

Gs 1 and GS 3 I completed but GS 2 had to leave out the CAT question as I realised that it was asking something specific and I had barely any idea about it. Gs 4 I could only finish by answering a couple of questions succinctly, wasted too much time on the 3 random case studies which totally threw my timing off@GloriousMess26

2.2k views

Yeah even I was wondering if UPSC had to copy a line it would have done it verbatim what was the point of adding another word @nikhilit20112751

2.1k views

Aisa Lag raha hai is baar ke gs 2 ke liye khaamakha ki padhai kari?@nikhilit20112751

Fir to pakka aa jayega second week me @nikhilit20112751

2.1k views

Bhai bhai bhai yehi hai matlab sab fasaad ki jadh ab to koi gunjaaish nahi hai doubt ki@ranyo_asoka

2.1k views

Highly possible, aur kisi ko kaise itna josh aayega ye random chapter padh kar ki question bana de ek @nikhilit20112751

2.1k views

Haan dekha mai. Jitna us chapter me hai utna to kabhi 250 words me nahi aata@ranyo_asoka

2.1k views

I have kept focused to criminalisation and ADL alongwith other basic points regarding lack of quality debates@ranyo_asoka

2.1k views

In my opinion that is the biggest challenge, keeping everything you know to the word limit as specified@Shubz

2.1k views

Tum log ko yaad kaise hai kya likha, mujhe sochna pada ye yaad karne ke liye ki kya likha tha@Caesar

2.2k views

When did this start with story funda gain prominence? Last year or year before that ?@dr-ahmednaaz8567

2.2k views

Coaching industry for a person who has spent some 4 to 5 years in service would be immensely lucrative job. Specially if the person is a half decent teacher.@Champak

2.2k views

I guess you should try out on a trial basis before changing course, a number of serving officers teach or take occasional courses.@Champak

Firstly it is very difficult to trust memory now, with respect to what I actually wrote in the paper so it is very difficult to compare with any of these peeps. Secondly in a few questions they have done extensive research like the Traditional Knowledge question. Thirdly they are forcing all questions into their mandated structure which was incredibly tough for anyone who was giving the exam. They are also being objective about questions which are incredibly subjective in my opinion, like the sustainability and inclusive growth question.@Rand_Al_Thor

I am unsure about a few questions like facial reconstruction, phenomenology and could not attempt Turner part of that question well because of time. Paper 2 was a bit more technical than last years. But it also depends on the question selection.@sat_009

Sociology and anthropology ke around hi the history me bhi mere centre me@AllMight

2.1k views

Jug jug jiyo@Shubz

2.1k views

That is obviously true. The point is that there should be a general consensus on what could be those general points that the UPSC examiner seeks.@paranthapijja

Don’t worry bhai the same was the situation with me in 2016 and I was sure I had gotten several sites wrong but I ultimately scored more in paper 1 even after leaving a question in the medieval part. (Got 138 in paper 1 with 6 months history prep)@Shubz

minimum wage pe rehna kaafi fun project hai@ranyo_asoka

This is very true. Case in point my gs 1 marks, they have gone from 122 (when I had history optional so the content in my answers was richer) to 89 in 2017 ( there was an overall scaling down but I wrote random paper filler answers in at least 3 questions)@duster2019

I have almost a similar scenario also. But I left the CAT question in gs 2 instead of writing random bakar as I felt that they were asking for something really specific that I did not know of. In gs 4 attempted 3 10 markers using hub spoke type stuff, pata nahi kitne marks milenge in answers mein.@GloriousMess26

I agree with you this strategy is foolproof for history. can also make fact intensive micro notes which are very helpful in case random questions are asked.@duster2019

Pick up a novel haha@Raja123

2.1k views

It actually depends on the person. Imo, You can easily prep for prelims while working full time if you have cleared it twice. For mains try to take some days off before the paper. Frankly a 5 day week with 9 to 5 timings gives you a lot of time to study and focus only if you don’t have any other responsibilities and can keep off socialising.@dancingminion

Wohi sab normal stuff, causes of hunger and how they are not being addressed by increasing income levels. Also included out of pocket expenditure, luxury goods consumption like Coca Cola etc. lack of cheap pulses and issue of female malnutrition (social causes). Concluded by mentioning national nutrition mission I think, don’t remember exactly as it was among the last questions I attempted@dr-ahmednaaz8567

There is a growing divergence in the relationship between poverty and hunger in India. The shrinking of social expenditure by the government is forcing the poor to spend more on Non- Food essential items squeezing their food – budget.- Elucidate.@Raja123

What did you write on, I wrote on courage to accept and dedication to improve.@Haeckel

This is true... and you know what they say... wisdom finds truth.?@Haeckel

accept karna kya hota hai, courage kyu zaroori hai, it’s implications for success. Same for the second part, dedication to improve implications for succeeding. Moved on to human species and its achievements being linked to both of these kaise sab civilisation emerge kiya etc due to constant ... insert essay topic... , then went to political social economic ethical aspects elaborate kiya same stuff, then went on to personal life gave example of some people (I seriously don’t remember kiska example diya ek to Phogat sisters ka diya tha) ended with how this should be imparted to our next generation.@Haeckel

Sahi baat hai bhai. Mujhe toh apna na select hone ka kaaran buri kismat hi lagta hai. Kaafi events hue hain over a period of time, over various attempts.
Ek misconception bhi hai bhai, people who are clearing this exam for the past 2 to 3 years are generally people who have been at it for a number of attempts, it is unlike 2014 2015 when a lot of new people used to get selected. Maybe you guys can analyse the reasons.@Yes_I_am_in
