@dancingminioni dont know if my answer helps you. I'll just share my experience. Before plunging into UPSC, i had 1.5 years experience in JP Morgan. And then followed by 3 failures n hence 3 years gap. Didn't want to risk losing backup career also n hence decided to get back to IT. Started applying for jobs and very few companies responded n that too they were startups/semi-MNCs which i didn't want to join as I wanted time to study again for CSE. Fortunately i got offers from 2 very good MNCs in 2.5 months. JP Morgan again n Oracle. Worked in Oracle for 1.5 years again before quitting after prelims this year as management didn't agree for 3 months leave.
What worked for me?
Referrals : very very few interviews got scheduled through consultants. College friends, my colleagues who were 10years experienced helped me get an interview opportunity and all i wanted was that. I had faith in my tech skills.
My answer to gap: i wanted to follow my passion and if not by 25 i couldn't have done it ever. And now I'm done with cse, i want to start my career in IT. I even told to few that I'm 26 so don't want to mess-up with my career anymore
Few things that struck them in my resume (i think so):
- Hail from #1 regional engineering college in Karnataka ( not iit/nit). So most managers were aware of the college name as i was searching in Bangalore only.
National level tech paper published. An exciting mobile app developed way back in 2011 when there was no Android in India. Tech challenge winner certificate. And some interesting projects.
My suggestion:
Please save your interviews referred by your friends to the end. Until then Attend every interview shortlisted even if it's a startup, you can always refuse joining it if uninterested. Because You'll get to know the questions trend in the market. After you prepare for variety of questions, attend interviews arranged through referrals.
Prepare with utmost seriousness. Remember they are not fools to hire someone who has gap. So you have to prove yourself that you are competent enough even to the day. i was stunned to see JP Moragn drilling me for 6 rounds + HR round for its own ex- employee before selecting me.
Be mentally ready that hunting jobs in IT takes 3-5 months.

I really don't understand how n why people are co-relating cse results with number of active computers n attendance in UPSC office. You never know if some computers aren't switched off while employees left office (people just lock screen n leave at times). At times certain computers will have to be switched on for days to perform some system tasks.
About employees, we don't know if they are full time employees who work inside physical upsc office or remotely logged in because upsc will surely have some back end IT team who will have to maintain portal.
CSE is just an another exam for UPSC amongst many exams it conducts every year. We value cse more because we have written it. They wouldn't be keen to stay back in office just to declare our results faster.
They'll declare results when they are done with all the procedural
work.

Dude are you 100% sure that the attendance is based on biometric only ? I can't comment unless i know of it for sure. I know few civil servants personally who do not work from office but from house at times and still their attendance will be counted in the department. I don't know if it's something different for upsc.
Anyway, i really don't think employees stay back in a government office only to hurry up results declaration process of some exam. Come on dude, its just a routine work for employees there. Why will they be pressurized to do such a work. Even if people are present inside, it'll be for some other reason i feel.
It's better we carry on our daily tasks. When results come out, we'll some how get notified

For me morality is not harming or even to create panic amongst others and the rules by any administrator would be to serve that purpose only. So to be very very honest this is what i have been doing all these times. Even in day light when I'm in a hurry , i check all the other ends( including police), if the red light is over 60s n if i find no vehicle within ~400m or pedestrian within 50m i just jump the signal.

- If you check the properties of pdf, you can see it is generated through word file. UPSC pdf is generated through automated script. There is script in database which trigger the script to generate pdf in a defined format. Only variable name is required to be changed.

On results: People in tg are telling that it's either before upcoming Wednesday or post 16th Jan as there is some court case related to EWS on 16th. Any idea what's this case about?
Copy pasting the response i got in tg:
"It means that,
- The EWS aspirants approached the tribunals against the order of UPSC to withheld their candidature.
- However, EWS were allowed to write the mains as per order of tribunal on 19.09.2019.
- Post mains, result declaration is contentious issue because if the EWS are left out of the list may lead to serious issues. However, if their names are mentioned in the list, say with astrix, it would be safer as case would be sorted out before the commencement of interview. The case is listed for 16 jan.
In view of above tribunal directed the declaration of results including the EWS
PS: Here EWS means aspirants have have failed to declare their certificates in the format sought by upsc.
If EWS loses the case then Non genuine EWS will be replaced by genuine EWS.
That's why case will be dealt before Interview.
Assume that for now UPSC will release real/true/ raw result.
Then there will be two scenarios:
EWS loses the case - Genuine EWS will replace the non genuine one.
EWS wins - status quo."

Not necessarily dude. You think people with MD, LLM, MS outside India, MBAs from IIMs and many other equally competent people decide their career just because of media hype? and that too when it comes to their personal aspirations and career which they have to pursue for next 20+ years?
Even if one ignores qualifications, the average candidate's age who clears this exam is 27-28. And I'm sure everyone would have undergone a roller coaster life until then, gaining more from their life experiences and internalising what their internal desires are, than a mere external media push factor.
If one isn't interested in IAS, IPS, IFS its not apt to disrespect others' wishes. For some, your first preference might be their last preference or not even tick that service. I know people who only ticked IAS ONLY because they weren't interested in other services.
You definitely cannot generalise things!

They have mentioned that the changes take effect from next recruitment cycle. I feel the recruitment cycle here is the recruitment cycle of Indian Railways service. So for them, 2020 pass out candidates from CSE '19 are their next set of officers. They have had their 2019 recruitees already from CSE '18.

@DKTI read both TH and IE for 2019 pre. After giving paper I found both of them overrated for pre(they are very useful for mains). Whatever I scored to clear pre was due to insights and Vision CA booklets and some grip at statics and some tukkas gone right.
The tukkas , so called guess work n elemination, you could mark because of knowledge from newspapers you read everyday. That knowledge in one's backdrop will unknowingly help in deciphering 3-4 questions. I feel reading newspaper helps in both prelims n mains.

In the evening on the day before optional, unplanned, I went near the examination centre as it was near my room and then was freaked out to see candidates coming out of hall writing English n regional language papers. I had thought they weren't compulsory and had missed intentionally to study for optional. Multiple thoughts started pouring in suddenly at the moment - about the best possible efforts I had put in this time, quitting job after prelims only to buy time for mains and my bleak future because of ignoring compulsory papers. Rushed inside the building, pleaded faculties to allow me write them but none obliged including the one who was my professor! Dejected, angry at my own mistake and negligence, I came out helplessly and was boiling with frustration within!
And then I hear a bell ringing. No! it wasn't of the examination centre but of my house! In no time I open my eyes and hellll it was one f***ing dream. Took 2 minutes to console myself that it was a dream!
This happened to me a month after mains this year

But some of us have a situation which is literally "is baar bahut kuch stake pe hai (many things are at stake) ". You want to brave the circumstances but still fear the consequences. Any of you deal with the same situation of "many things at stake"??
I have decided this to be my last attempt. I am not even looking at prelims/mains books as I'm not giving my attempt in 2020. If i sail through it would be great, else moving on with backup career. Tired after being in upsc cycle for 5+ years.

I had the same plan when it was my third attempt. Had thought of MBA if failed at uspc, but theUPSC NASHAdragged me to this point and now I feel I don't have the mental energy to do MBA at least the immediate year. May be I'll have to work for few months, recoup the energy n prepare for MBA
@zombielandAttempted 2 with very short time in hand to study as I was working. I regret attempting those years (had thought who would require 6 chances to clear this exam, so attempted). 2 attempts full-time. 2019 attempt with job again until 21st June.

I'm not the right person to answer this dude. But i know a person who had studied for upsc for few years, got 107th( don't remember exactly) rank but was denied service because of some reason. Then he joined IIM and got into a very good company. But he fought the case in court parallely and got reinstated as IAS finally.
Others who know people joining PGP with 3-4 years gap can answer this.

If your company provides loss of pay leave option for 3 months, that would be great.

@NadigVinayNow a days agar company mein starting mein apna caliber dikha do, then they easily provide sabbatical to retain you (paytm guys also offered me 3 months sabbatical as another option instead of resigning, but I rejected that), so counting on that if I clear pre this time also.
Hence the plan is that I will take job very seriously till march, and then start preparation for pre from april. If I clear it, will ask for sabbatical (jitni bhi duration ka wo dein).
Obviously all of the above is valid if I am not able to clear this time. Regarding this year's mains, it was my first one. Have completed all the papers, with relevant answers in most of the questions, and not so relevant in some. So, frankly have no idea what to expect.
With the same intention of availing loss of pay , i had worked well until Feb to build an impression in my company. But to my bad luck my entire team and higher teams in India n US got re organised completely in June due to under performance of the product. So it was difficult for my manager to convince the new seniors.

Any body here giving IRS as second preference over IPS? I.e. IAS>IRS>IPS. How would you justify yourself?
Attended an interview guidance session by a retired IAS few days back and the officer told such preference would attract a question over the reason for preferring IRS over IPS. Or why not IPS over IRS.

It's hard to answer this question for any sincere aspirant who has faced the harsh side of our belovedUnpredictablePSC. Too many factors involved in mains n interview. Quality of gs, ethics, essay n optional answers. Subject expertise of evaluator on questions which isn't his domain, answer presentation, scaling down trend of few optionals, relative peer performance in same optional, etc. A person who hasn't missed attempting a single mark also just can't be 100% sure of clearing mains/ interview. Just hope for the best.

While most of my classmates left to US for masters i left to Delhi in Nov 2014 after quitting a job in IT. Underwent Political Science coaching which took too long to get completed ( got over a month before prelims) and i failed miserably in prelims 2015 (didn't know i had to study laxmikant also). Returned to Bangalore, Changed optional to Kannada literature in '16, worked hard but missed prelims '16 very very marginally. Dejected ,recouped myself to give one last attempt full time n worked even harder solving multiple institutions' question papers for '17. But this time i failed in exam hall itself with self created pressure that if i wouldn't clear it this time when i'm full time aspirant, i would never be able do it with job ever. Missed marginally again. 3 years gap pushed me to take up job in IT as i feared doors to get closed in backup career too. Joined IT in early Jan'18 and made a room near company to save commuting time although my parents stayed at Bangalore itself. it took time for me to get acquainted with the work n i had to concentrate properly as i feared lay off. With much lesser time in hand i prepared how much ever i could but failed in '18 prelims again. I had decided to move on. But my inner heart wanted to give one last try as in 3 of 4 attempts i had failed due to adverse situations n not because of my inability. So gathered courage, prepared for optional n mains more in 2018 post prelims, and cleared prelims'19 with job itself. Management didn't provide 3 months leave so resigned,, served notice period and studied my best in remaining 85 days. I had left only one 10 mark question across all papers, had written good answers in many n below average in few. was very much expecting an interview call but failed again.
Now I'm 28, done with 5 attempts, 0 savings (infact living on debt after investing 13lakh into this for 6 years), exhausted mentally completely. I am definitely not in a state of mind to give the remaining 1 attempt. My dream chase has come to an end. I feel so bad for not being able to achieve my dream and After so much of exposure about this profession i have to go back to a smaller world IT n start liking a job which i don't by heart. All that this exam process taught me was to live with humility n to never let the courage, spark in you ( to do anything) die down. I'm happy to have learnt that so many souls fight hard to get what they want in life despite having an easier route to settle down in life.
Remember, certain goals are so so great that even failing at achieving it also makes one great . And i proudly say that CSE is one such.

@VivekanandSBro, I do not want to exhaust my 1 last attempt without any improvement in mains as I didn't read anything after '19mains + mental fatigue of 6 years of studies. So if at all if my life provides me a conducive atmosphere n opportunity to attempt in 2021 or 2022 for one last time, I would attempt it with complete preparation. I'm definitely not a person who would give up on something despite being competent. But you know it's life. At times I have to bow down before something that's not in my control. I'll see what's there in my destiny box. Thank you for your suggestion.
