Mains 2022 - All Papers PDF + R**** Rona + Paper Discussion

anyone else who interpretated YOU CANNOT Step into tHE SAME RIVER TWICE AS

You cannot repeat the same mistake again ??

186.5k views
@JohnWick3 That is its meaning if we see the full quote. It talks about change
Many of my friends took the repeat same mistake interpretation but  the philosopher who gave the quote has different meaning of constant change
I don't know if upsc will entertain my interpretation.

Anybody from civil engineering? How was your paper 2?

5.4k views
@mvp It was my 3rd mains.Never seen such a tough paper 2.Too much theory and  questions  were vague .Never seen such questions
Hope there is less scaling

I hope upsc corrects its mistake

I wrote three options in 2 case studies and only 2 options in 4 case studies

Has everyone written 3 options in each case studies?

3.9k views
@masteroptimist Writing more options mean there will be time crunch and dilution whether in case studies or in part A .
Secondly in two questions, they already asked course of action separately
eg in city transport strike question

After justifying my course of action i used to write that Further i will do this .............
eg
In rare disease q i can use Rashtriya arogya nidhi fund for treatment

Now i realize that i should have written these points in the options itself

3.6k views
@Panchayat Yes ideally it should be but reality is different.

If anyone writes 3 or 4options in all case studies with critical examination, then she/he may compromise somewhere in quality.
Many write good case studies but miss demand in part A and score average overall.

If someone can complete case studies in 90 mins with 3 4 options in each case study with 7 8 ethical dilemmas 7 8 points in other parts of question, then thats a different story

3.4k views
@Capedcrusader1 3 is required when you choose two extremes and u have to choose middle path
But if your options are not extreme then u can choose one of them n  there is no need of 3
Eg Environment notice question one can say option 1 withdraw notice option 2nd-  issue notice with time for complying with standards

Or one of the extremes is the answer
Eg Prabhat question either u select or reject candidature

@Panchayat Good discussion doesnt just  depend on quantity of options.
It depends on the quality of options, quality of course of action, quality of justification, innovative solutions etc.
You cant say that someone used two options so it will be an average marking .Even in 2021 gs4 I got 107 after completely leaving one case study and writing only two options.
So it is not black and white that 2 or 3 or 4 options will fetch more marks.
It depends on quality both of options n justification.
Moreover coming to quantity, it matters but quantity is not just about number of options. It is also about no of points in ethical dilemma ,no of points in course of action and elsewhere.

@Panchayat Its a race against time.
Everyone has to do some tradeoff.

3.6k views
@masteroptimist They are of 130 marks.Statistically speaking, they are slightly more important.
Moreover, its so easy to miss demand in hurry.

@Panchayat Geography questions were tricky to say the least-
1.Primary rock -many included sedimentary and metamorphic too
2.Colour coded warning of cyclones
3.Deccan Trap resource potential
In this many wrote about examples of Deccan Plateau whereas Deccan Trap is not same as Deccan Plateau.
Don't know what would  examiner feel after back to back 3 questions being poorly answered with incorrect information.

5.3k views

Let us not fight over difference of opinion. Otherwise the limited discussion which is happening will stop.

Both sides of arguments have weight

Master optimist is right about self introspection. The first thing we should always ask is how we could do better.

On the other side of the argument, if the case study or part a was less lengthy we could have come out with better quality answers. In such lengthy papers those people who make excellent decisions but take time have disadvantage.

.I studied various quotes examples diagrams etc but scarcity of time me i couldn't use many of them. Aisa feel hua ki preparation under utilised raha.I could feel the grievance of street lamp and mcculum.

May be upsc was trying that let us give so less time to candidate that she or he can not think much and their answers r more natural. Morover,it also checks stress handling, answering spontaneously etc .It is advantageous to those who think above average spontaneously.

In my opinion both types of civil servants are required-one who give excellent quality but take their own time and one who take decent decision even in a hurry.

@Kenshein I took the same interpretation of not repeating mistakes again and again.
There a r decent number of people who took this interpretation.
Moreover, essays are open to multiple interpretation. Its about how much justice we have done to our interpretation.

@Capedcrusader1 Subject experts check each section. Its not that it will carry throughout the paper. However, impression do matter.
Good impression leads to ignoring of few mistakes while bad impression magnifies mistakes.
My first 2 3 questions in Geography are not written well.It is bound to have a negative  impact on other geography questions.
The extent depends on examiner.

@Kenshein We have no choice but to keep faith on examiners.

I described what i meant with each word and the overall quote
How we have to learn from mistakes, have to be adaptive n if we repeat same thing n expect different result it will be foolishness( Albert Einstein)
Examples Present Russia Ukraine war bloc formation we cannot repeat mistakes that led to world war
Udaipur Kanhaiya killing and past mistake of  Communalism
K rail has to be ecologically friendly otherwise we will repeat same past mistake of Kerala floods
Covid 2nd wave tragedy as we again repeated mistakes of 1st wave
Britain 19th century Luddite movement where machines were destroyed as unemployment rose due to Industrial revolution
We cannot repeat same mistake in 4th IR

Then wrote that sometime we r forced to step into the same river due to circumstances and poverty
How in Meghalaya poor people r stepping into same river of rat hole mining because of abject poverty

Then what should we do before stepping into river
Firstly,We have to change approach before stepping into river
Eg ISRO couldn't fully succeed in Chandrayan 2
It learnt from mistakes and made new Inflatable Aerodynamics Decelerator which will help in soft landing
2nd we have to learn swimming (developing capabilities) health education skill
3rd importance of life boats who save us in tough times that is family friends mentors
4th if we want to step far in the river we must use boat which is a symbol of collective effort as many rowers row together
Means nation has to be united for progress

I took a different interpretation than Mr Hereclitus and hope he will not check my essay paper

3.1k views
@Kenshein Dont worry essay is much more than  interpretation

@Kenshein My best wishes to you.I pray it improves this year .A 10 to 20 marks boost in essay matters a lot in the end.

In part A I wrote on " Ships are safe in harbour but that is not ships are built for"

Scientific and romanticism one is also a good topic to bring many arguments n discussion.

4.6k views
@RegistaniOonth I don't know what went wrong with the essay but cant blame entirely on interpretation.
Interpretation can be blamed upon if it's totally unrelated to the topic.
I too wrote Hands that rocked the cradle rule the world.I only mentioned mother once that means 0.5 pages out of 11 .Moreover,my first essay went bad.
Got 119 though its average.
Its a curious case - why they gave 58.

4.2k views
@nalin_pandey78066 Kuch to baat rahi hogi
I don't think ki just different interpretation ki baat hai because 58 means ki both essays are compromised.

3.3k views
@MC Cullum I have seen some disastrous essays. Kya interpretation hai wo samajh hi nahi aa Raha poora essay padhne ke baad and still they got 90+

I really dont know ki examiner ne kya soch liya

I heard few cases jahan candidate ne essay ka topic hi nahi mention kiya which confused examiner.

Apart from that its hard to digest 58

2.After the completion of the video, the red t shirt guy in background hit him with the cricket ball
3.His hands movement are two levels up from Dhruv Rathee/Dhruv Tara
4.If he has read Art of Seduction ,the examiner has read Art of rejection.

@garvitksh Paper 1 to har saal jaisa Straight forward but lengthy
Paper 2 was bouncer
Last year se tough tha paper 2
Moreover kai logon ne galat assumption le liye
Eg VDF kuch ne assume kar liya 1 jabki wahi nikaalna tha from axle load
Similarly slope value etc ye sab range me hi assume karna hota hai otherwise answer will not come in range

3.6k views
@garvitksh Nothing new ,mistakes are very common in paper 1.
Last time i attempted 215 and my unscaled marks was 185(30 marks silly mistakes)
185 led to 128 marks in P1
Similarly p2 me unscaled marks was 173
I finally got 140
That means 358 raw marks pe 268 mile the last time
May be this year scaling kam ho due to tough paper 2

@masteroptimist And please define what is "sensibly picking the topic"
Many essays have multiple interpretations

2.6k views

I dont think the question was

"You cannot step twice into the same river" Write Hereclitus's views on the quote.

Its an essay and why would i agree with A or B or C or H philosophers

They r not sacrosanct that u cannot  question their views.

People question established facts ,the theory of gravity etc and many are shying from even questioning a philosopher's subjective view 😂😂

What i have observed is that there r 2 types of people-One knew the view of Hereclitus or Buddha and wrote accordingly

The other half didn't know such quote and interpreted that You cannot repeat the same mistake over and over again

Its open to multiple interpretations.

2.5k views
@Capedcrusader1 In this case there is a clear division of interpretation
Jisne quote padha wo alag tarike se interpret karega
Otherwise jisne nahi padha wo alag tarah se interpretat karega

On this essay coaching community me bhi divide ho gaya interpretation me

@Capedcrusader1 Yahan pe split vote ho gaya hai because of community
What u r saying is right if maine kuch atrangi satrangi sa interpretation le liya ho essay ka which is unique to me But
Out of 9 people i have talked to jisne ye essay likha ,5 ne repeat the mistakes waala interpret kiya The others knew the quote.
The sample is very small but what i want to say is that if majority ne wahi interpret kiya to it may set a different agenda

Philosophical Topics ke different meaning ho sakte hain

2.6k views
@Capedcrusader1 The problem with this type of thought is
You r not arguing my argument.
You r arguing my Right to argument
If u had a different interpretation, it would have been perfectly fine but what u r saying is that
There is only one FIXED interpretation for all topics and you cannot think anything else

Secondly
KEEPING CLOSELY TO SUBJECT OF MATTER MEANS
whatever you have interpretated be Close to that
Not to deviate much from your interpretation.

2.8k views
@Capedcrusader1 He didnt even mention motherhood and got 120
Maine to.mother and women dono.pe max 0.5 page bhi nahi likha hoga I.got 119
1st essay i wrote badly Poor examples.
Agar ek fixed interpretation hota to bahut difference hota between his and my marks

2.7k views
@Capedcrusader1 You r saying there is only One FIXED demand
You only said -only One interpretation is there which is FIXED
Thats how you r hindering the right to argument.

Close.to demand YeS but there is no one fixed DEMAND

Otherwise its not possible that
Those who wrote nothing on motherhood
Those who wrote everything on motherhood
Those who wrote everything on women empowerment
Are getting similar marks
If there is only ONE DEMAND that means the other demand is completely wrong
Tab to 20 30 marks de dene chahiye baaki 2 ko

@Panchayat Full quote pe meaning is very clear but half quote ke wajah se alag interpretation aa gaya.
Agar full quote pe people had written on repeating mistakes then shayad galat hota interpretation.
The reason why people realised late because jin log ne Hereclitus ko nahi padha hoga pehle unhe naturally meaning yahi lagega ki its about "Mistake repeat nahi karna hai ".

Interpretations r multiple
Essay and a PSIR/ Philosophy optional ke paper me difference is
In essay there is freedom to interpret.

@vishal_12342 170 as unscaled marks in p2 will get u around 136
170 in p1 will get u around 110

For 195 marks,one will get 140

Based on rough estimates ,for every 5  marks down one extra marks will be deducted

So on 170 u will get 140-25-5 =110

Likewise in paper 2

On 173/174 u will get 140

So 170 translates into 136

3.9k views
@rockhard It works like this
1. Marks of top 10 pc or 20 pc are taken as a reference.
Lets say average topper marks in paper 1 is
120 in psir
115 in sociology
125 in anthro
195 in maths

195 in Civil engineering

And average of all subjects comes out to be 140(as more people are from humanities so average will be closer to them)

That means marks of PSIR candidates will be scaled up by 20 marks (140-20)

But here is a catch of scaling

Lets say if someone scored 140 in psir, then her his score will be 140+20+7  marks extra upscaling due to better performance in her his subject

That means 167

On the other hand if someone just gets 100 marks in psir as raw marks

The net marks will be 100+20- 7 for poor performance relatively which means 113 marks

Rough estimate says in maths engineering

For every 5 marks above average u get 1 marks extra

For humanities every 3 marks above toppers average will fetch u 1 extra marks
