GS1 was tough compared to GS2, GS3Even I found GS 1 Relatively tougher than other GS papers this year. However, kept quite given that a lot were calling GS 1 as easier. Maybe they were comparing the GS 1 with 2021 paper or maybe we are in the minority 😅
All the questions that you all have mentioned for GS 1 were tough for me too especially colour coding, Isthmus & Straits & Deccan trap. Sculptures me I couldn't even recall Khujarao . But yes I did write about Vijaynagar temples & a little about later Chola Bronze sculptures
5. The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining
How should it be interpreted?
My interpretation was: For a roof :- we will be able to see the holes/damages in the roof properly when sun is shining above; this helps us repair the roof effectively. In the absence of sun ->holes go undetected ->then one cannot repair the roof effectively; resulting roof will still be with flaws.
Similarly,
We will be able to understand the problems in a system ->if we have full view of the system & transparency & right knowledge about the system. This helps us repair and modify the system effectively.
roof = any system
sunlight = transparency, knowledge; full participation of public / public's view etc
time to repair the roof is when sun is shining means preparing in advanced for emergency...e.g. preparing vaccines before another wave etc etc... this is the precise meaning of this topic.. philosophically and literally... Having said that i cannot claim that they deduct marks for different interpretation. But i also think that if we are free to interpret essays the way we want, that would make essay a very easy paper.. interpret anything and write.

As per my interpretation: The relation between the Roof and Sunshine is this:
During sunshine we can see the flaws in a roof properly. Hence it is the right time to repair.
Did u read the hindi version of essay during exam?Hi all,
This is my first post. Since the mains exam, one thing has been going in my head regarding the essay paper.
In section B, I attempted the 8th question - "Just because you have a choice, it does not mean that any of them has to be right".
Contrary to the Hindi translation of 'right' i.e. 'sahi' , I interpreted 'right' in the fundamental rights, etc. context. I defined choices and rights.Rights - as claims of individuals against state. Choices - as decision making, speech, practicing religion, etc.
I just want to know if anyone else has done the same. I began the essay with the Anuraddha Bhasin case, where the Supreme Court has allowed the 'choice' of using internet as a right for freedom of expression & profession, but fell short of recognising it as a fundamental right itself. Thereafter, I explored 3 broad headers:
- "not all choices can be rights"
- "some choices have to be rights"
- "There's need of a balance between choices, rights & responsibilities."
Would UPSC allow such interpretation of the question? Any inputs are appreciated.
- Not all choices can be rights
As a Non hindi person, I have clear disadvantage with the exam.@deepakY aaapko hindi translation ek baar padh lena chahiye tha.
I got this lesson from my father. He said that you might attempt the paper in English but you will always be more comfortable with hindi. so if you ever get stuck in understanding the question, try reading hindi version and you may understand the core demand of the question. very nice lesson.
yar but in all seriousness, this is so not done. what if someone actually doesnt understand hindi??
That can happen. Last year in prelims ->Vijaynagar "Soothsaying" question I got wrong because , I can't read hindi version where it mentioned "Bhavishyavani".
In an exam where 1 mark determine many ranks and in out of prelims list ->this is a genuine concern.
Few years ago, there was this mains gs1 question "cryosphere "question. Many didnt know what cryosphere was. But those who read hindi version addressed that mains question effectively.
@Capedcrusader1 non hindi wale ko answers likhte time jyada nhi sochna padta hai...non-hindi states ke bache english me kaafi quickly produce kar paate hai thoughts ko...aur market me material ki quality english language ki kaafi achhi hai..
"non hindi wale ko answers likhte time jyada nhi sochna padta hai"
Bro, thats not the case. :)
That might be a positive stereotype. But not true.
There is no difference in hindi, non hindi people in terms of thought process or writing in English.

translation lag is always there. however quantum of lag varies
what were your last year scores in all papers?essay- misinterpreted 2nd topic. So can’t say really.gs1- personally I felt slightly easier than last years( cuz geography was relatively easier, + I’m comfortable in socio questions due to my optional.gs2- difficult for me, especially 15 markers. Found them vague, wrote whatever I couldgs3- definitely easier than last years. SnT questions gave headache though.gs4- a very difficult paper indeed( very lengthy). Answer quality is definitely compromised.optional- slightly better than last time( fingers crossed).gs 2 i agree with 15marker issue. i attempted 10 markers much better. gs 3 issue basically because of those fe questions only. gs 4 issue is that i cant really guage my performance because i dont remember what i wrote. gut feeling is that 10 markers have been done in haste (1:20) and these 10 markers created a panic due to the size of questions. after giving mocks, i am no more scared of gs 4 but never have i ever seen such huge 10 markers. what followed was panic. but then last year the quality is much bad and also left around 2 10 markers(basically did formality in writing them)
GS1 - Indian Society - How to Study?
I always thought Society in GS1 is my strong area. But struggled to write answers in Mains 2022.
what we usually study: problems of women, poverty, urbanization, secularism, regionalism and other standard topics. Questions in Test series are usually direct and I scored well in this section.
But in UPSC exam,
Topics are difficult: Tier 2 cities & New middle class, salience of sect, globalization and new technology; And last year - population education, Gig economy & Women etc.
UPSC questions are one layer deeper than Test series questions. And are have a new dimension .
How to prepare for Society? What new sources to study to cover this extra level of deepness of topics? Do we have to look for any sociology material?

Can you put some specific questions that you found difficult to answer. Questions of society are fairly open ended and will require some understanding. They are a great leveller too.
Tier 2 cities & New middle class, salience of sect, globalization and new technology; And last year - population education, Gig economy & Women etc.
I thought I was good at Society among GS1 topics. But I found my performance was better in History + Culture after analyzing.
@BattingBaba are you sure? It is not clarified in any government document. Further just look at selection criteria ( engg graduates and ca only).so this year they may recruit BA graduates in this service. How it can be possible?I think there is confusion in aspirant mind on this issue
Before prelims a govt document said 150 seats of IRMS will be selected through CSE 2022. That's why number of seats crossed 1000 in CSE 2022.
@BattingBaba but the document is not sacrosanct. It was also mentioned that recruitment authority has final say.( I read it somewhere long back)
@BattingBaba but the document is not sacrosanct. It was also mentioned that recruitment authority has final say.( I read it somewhere long back)
Not this document. The cse 2022 advertisement ( irms is not mentioned in that) published in Feb 2022. ( 861 vacancies wala mein)
Oh in that syllabus document (that came in Feb) they mentioned 861 only. Later govt notified that IRMS 150 seats will also selected through CSE 2022.
I then felt relaxed as prelims more people will be selected. This year 13000 people selected in prelims because of the seats increase due to IRMS.
In with anthropology. 5th attempt, 3rd mains, 1st interview. Finally mains clear hua. Please share how you were able to clear mains finally. Would be really helpful.
+1
Also pls tell about anthropology - choices attempted, good/unique points that you have written that fetched marks and the answers that you have not written well. (Icouldn't clear this year mains)

In Anthropology again, memorized definitions and who gave those defintions. Collected examples, case studies etc from various places.
Eg - in the question on modernization effects on health, I used a graph I had noted down from Relethford's book on Biological anthropology that documented the effect of modernization on Blood pressure on inhabitants of Gilbert island.
In the question on different types of social control in different political systems, just copy pasted around 10 different types as given in Ember and ember.
In paper 2, relied heavily on Mandar patki notes as they are quite dense with names of various scholars. Also collected some material from IGNOU especially related to tribal movements. Also used some case studies, data points from Xaxa committee report.
Made notes and just memorized all the important points and definitions by heart. My paper 2 was better than paper 1 I felt. Even in general question types I tried to put scholar names and books. This can happen however only if you have comprehensive notes and have revised and memorized them over and over again.
Some answers I couldn't write well. Eg In paper 1, participatory rural appraisal, domestic groups - skipped this topic because based on PYQs I thought it was an unimportant topic. Then shamanism witchcraft question also was attempted poorly because I skipped it for the same reason as above.
In paper 2 10 markers were well attempted, I was able to answer both part 10 markers in 50 mins. However got stuck in proto history of Gujarat question and spent 25 mins on that and still poorly attempted. Christianity question was also a little flimsy at best.
thanks for taking time out and giving a comprehensive reply. It is very enlightening as it tells the level of answers need to be written. Mostly depending on Akshat's book is not sufficient ( which I did).
I have been doing anthro (mostly) since mains. Looking like this is the best time to complete anthro comprehensively along with value addition. Such depth value addition and memorization cannot be done after prelims. And just depending on Akshat's book for ready made answers is a game over I guess.
I am ready too.
