Mains 2022 - All Papers PDF + R**** Rona + Paper Discussion

Adding my humble 2 cents to the gs4 case studies discussion here,

1) It's not necessary to list a lot of options. The time in the exam did not allow that because of 4 to 5 sub questions. Two options with one being favourable and the other being not desirable could do the job. The essence lies in expressing both of these in detail and with the required content.

2) I personally feel that you need to write the question number and the corresponding answer for it. Example, 6 (a).... Answer then 6(b)... Answer

If you've not written the sub part question number, it'll be difficult for the evaluator to differentiate your content for each of those sub questions and I'm not sure how marks will be awarded for answers written in a mixed fashion. On the flip side, if you've mentioned the corresponding sub question number and written your answer for it specifically, then you'll be alloted specific marks for all of those sub questions and you'll score well.

3) Those who've solved all case studies with the required ethical and aptitude content, with relevant backing of the principles and examples involved will score really good this time. Case studies will be the differentiator this time.

4) The standard approach that most of used in earlier mains will not work this time as the case studies sub questions were specific. We needed to address them directly without any other peripheral analysis.

@Panchayat nahi bro :P aisa nahi hota.

More options only mean that you're not sure of things / situation.

When a situation is analysed objectively, there can be either a yes or no.

Upsc just gives other random options to confuse us, and that doesn't mean that we give extra options to confuse upsc haha :D

Real life mei you only have the option of doing something or not doing something. If you are suggesting other options, it only indicates your ability to make things complex for decision making and also, other attitudes like escaping from the problem rather than directly addressing it.

Divergent thinking is good when the situation is unique and when you can actually afford to do that. In those case studies questions, the situations were pretty standard and you were also bound by legalities and ethical principles in all of those situations. In such cases, we all just converge to a yes or no.

Just my humble and personal opinion.

Some video clip in going viral of civils daily in which they are telling political and administrative reorganization question of GS1 was related to world history !!

Wonder how many of you have interpreted this way ?

It was world history bro :D From Colonialism till the recent Hong Kong / Taiwan issue. Just had to explain things that happened in different parts of the world.

ethics me sabka chhoota hai...or they might have compromised with the quality

Honestly quality jaisa kuch chiz hota nahi. Just have to write relevant content for that question. And this needs to be done for all questions. It's very difficult to determine what's high quality or low quality. What can be determined is whether you have addressed the demand of the question irrespective of the difference in content with others. If you've written all answers with what is being asked in the question, then you'll end up scoring in the higher average / above average zone of the normal distribution.

It's very important to attempt all questions, I've learnt this lesson after multiple mains failures..

Troposhere me kya likha 15 no. Ke liye , sects to kbhi pde hi nhi , strait wale me bhi 15 no. Kese likha..margdarshan kijiye

Mention the significance of straits and isthmus in international trade.
1) Definition of straits and isthmus with relevant diagram.
2) International trade is a very wide topic, You can explain multiple dimensions of it.
3) Historical context, Opening of suez canal reduced the shipping time and costs in comparison to the cape of good hope. Played a crucial role in the colonial projects.
4) Economic context, Can discuss about the importance of Malacca (For china) and Hormuz (For oil trade).
5) Geopolitical context, Can explain about Suez canal crisis, the fight for control of Malacca in the Indian ocean.
6) Security context, Piracy and Bab el Mandeb.
7) One can also discuss about the newer shipping routes that'll open up due to the melting of the arctic by global warming.

Troposphere is a very significant atmospheric layer that determines weather processed. How?

1) Define Troposphere, can add a diagram of atmosphere indicating where the troposphere is located.

2) Define weather and mention it's components (temperature, pressure, precipitation etc)

3) Explain how clouds affect weather, different clouds and their impact on temperature or pressure or precipitation. Example, Long wave absorption by Cirrus, Reflection of short wave by Cumulus, Rainfall and it's effects on temperature/pressure due to Nimbus clouds.

4) Explain how cyclonic and anti-cyclonic distribution affects temperature/pressure.

5) Explain how local winds affect temperature/pressure.

6) Explain temperature inversion.

7) Explain the role of Jet streams in Indian weather, Monsoon and cyclones in Bay of Bengal.

This answer is just never ending lol, a few points from the above would do justice. There's enough content in our Ncerts to deal with this question.

Guys, is it really possible to fill all the fifty pages,  in GS papers. As I had written many 15 marker questions in 2 or 2.5 pages

Yes it's possible. For questions where you feel that you have less content or less time the following two can help you in filling the pages,

1) A little bit of background info / intro to arrive at the need for answering the theme asked in the question.
2) Use diagrams/flowcharts (Only where you feel it can do justice).

Maybe I can help you with strait wala question.

  • Define straits
  • Write few straits and their linkages with international trade :-
    Hormuz- oil
Bab-el-mandeb - difficulty in trade due to piracy
bosphorus, dardanalles - quote the recent weaponisation of trade in context of Russia-Ukraine conflict
Malacca - quote Chinese Malaccan dilemma
    Davis strait
    Gibraltar strait
  • Draw the map showing these straits.

  • Define Isthumus
  • Give examples of isthumus of Panama- trade + Revenue for Panama
  • Give example of how China is trying to build a canal through isthumus of Kra (Thailand) to overcome her Malaccan dilemma.
  • Draw a map showing these isthumus.
(I didnt have many examples for isthumus, so drew the map little larger xD)

So far as Troposphere is concerned, waha jo bhi pata hai troposphere ka likh diya, highlighting some keywords - jet stream, advection, normal lapse rate, cloud formation, etc.
Baki sect wale ques ka answer padh kar toh examiner will have a laugh :3

GOod attempt.

Ab globalisation and tech wale par bhi prakaash daaliye sbhi log

Relationship between Globalization and new technology in a world of scarce resources, with special reference to India.

GS1 - Indian Society - How to Study?

I always thought Society in GS1 is my strong area. But struggled to write answers in Mains 2022.

what we usually study: problems of women, poverty, urbanization, secularism, regionalism and other standard topics. Questions in Test series are usually direct and I scored well in this section.

But in UPSC exam,

Topics are difficult: Tier 2 cities & New middle class, salience of sect, globalization and new technology; And last year - population education, Gig economy & Women etc.

UPSC questions are one layer deeper than Test series questions. And are have a new dimension .

How to prepare for Society? What new sources to study to cover this extra level of deepness of topics? Do we have to look for any sociology material?

@Neyawn @caped_crusader @Kenshein @Ganesh_Gaitonde others

Both in UPSC Prelims and Mains, There's always this perception about something is easy, but it is not always the case. That perception of easiness is mainly built upon our ideas about a particular topic. Topics like society are fairly simple to understand, but require deep levels of processing to be able to articulate or explain any societal phenomenon. What seems easy to hear or listen may not always be easier to reproduce, articulate and express succinctly.

It's not the topic which decides something is easy or difficult. It's the way, a question is framed, which makes things easy or difficult. So, while topics like society may feel like we don't even need to put so much efforts, it's actually the other way around. If you have segregated the questions topic-wise for every topic under that falls under "Society" in the mains syllabus, you would have realized the fact that it is impossible to predict anything and that you have to be prepared to answer these things effectively without having any kind of specialized knowledge.

I just prepare the basics of the topics mentioned in the syllabus and read the topics in news from vision magazine (because everyone else reads it, and if i skip it, i will be at a disadvantage with respect to others). The point here is that, I do the basics just like everyone does.

But additionally, I prepare myself mentally to deal with questions, that I may have never come across before. My plan of doing that is through

1) Basic definitions

2) Some kind of data to substantiate my arguments

3) Breaking the parts in the question and using PESTLE like things to link it to different dimensions

4) writing very civil servant like arguments by suppressing my biases (like being solution oriented, optimistic, compassionate, emotionally intelligent etc). I may not be this person in real life as I'm a person with million flaws, but i do have a fair idea of my flaws and make sure that i mask these flaws accordingly in my answer to give the evaluator what he may want to read.

I just do this and cook up an answer that seems almost acceptable. I won't score the highest, but I will score average marks per question with this approach, and ultimately that is what is needed.

Summary: Just prepare with same resources like everyone else does, so that you don't be at an disadvantage by skipping any standard resource. But, the key to dealing with such questions, lies in your mental preparation for such unheard or unknown or unprepared type of questions.

Please find your own personal way of  dealing the unknown type of questions in both prelims and mains, you'll find it very beneficial to score good marks.

This is what I've learnt from my failures and this is what i can humbly and personally suggest you.

Wish you the best.
