I don't understand one thing, for 250 words in gs 1 to 3 UPSC gives 3 pages and for same 250 words case study they give around 4.5 pages.

Ab samj hi nahi aata ki word limits me rhe ya pages bhare. 

mppsc main ethics provides a 1/3 of a page for 5 marker, but one whole page for 4 marker of case study. so ti think case studies ka jalwa he yaha par

Guys, is it really possible to fill all the fifty pages,  in GS papers. As I had written many 15 marker questions in 2 or 2.5 pages

when you order a big pizza with the original intentions to satisfy your curiosity about it as well as get full, that is, satisfy your hunger..... and achieve them both with half of that pizza, with other half lying there ready to share the night with your dustbin..... how do you measure the paisa-wasool index of that pizza? By the question that whether the pizza satisfied the original objectives that triggered the very order of the pizza or simply by the fact that you couldn't finish half of that implying you could consume only half the money-equivalent of what you actually paid? Obviously this evaluation varies from person to person.

A wise person will focus on the satisfaction and quality of pleasure that one half of pizza gave him, ignoring the wastage. A relatively incompetent person will spend the night with regrets and thoughts of wasting half the pizza that despite best efforts, he couldn't finish.

So i believe, a wise evaluator will ignore unfinished space ( uneaten half of pizza) and prioritise quality of what's written ( pleasure derived from one half of pizza) but not everyone is necessarily wise. your prayers should focus on giving your copies a wise evaluator. that's all i guess.

And yes by hook or crook, by sama dama danda or bheda, diagrams, flow charts, maps and graphs, it's possible to fill every square inch of each of those 50 pages in 2:55 hours and relax for 5 minutes after that, although  i could never do any such thing whatsoever.

in my first mains in 2020, i got 150 in paper 2 optional. i didn't have time to cross the blank pages but wrote good answers. in my second mains i wrote poor answers in p2, but diligently crossed all blank pages and got 108 so you decide....

your source is likely jagranjosh which gave expected mains cutoff 720 of 2021, so that source cannot be trusted and you cannot be taken seriously on this. Cutoff will likely decline with respect to previous year because increment of 299 seats is huge given the low base number of seats on which it adds up. but eventually everything will depend on how strictly or leniently marks are given in general.

@Ant_Man I was confused. "mid 19th century", and "territories" made me interpret it as a World History question, but the word "administrative", "reorganisation" (exact word in GS1 syllabus) and "ongoing process" make a case for Modern history too. 
I attempted it as a world history question though.


I could recall a pyq spectre of fragmented polity in 18th century india . that must have sub consciously influenced me to limit my answer to indian history. I am sure many aspirants who wrote pyq would be influenced that way without even recalling this phrase spectre of......


but now i realise that they never specifically mentioned india this time. that opens up a hundred thousand such reorganisations and political transformations across the world. but that would also make the question very complex and diverse, requiring a few hundred pages to do complete justice instead of 3 pages.

nevertheless I am beyond doubt that it was a world history question given the lack of specific mention of India. the unification of italy and Germany also started after midnineteeth century so...

A query regarding GS4 paper: Did you guys attempt the case studies in the order of the subparts? I went for the general approach of options available and then the course of action(while in many case studies asked this year, the course of action was asked before the options available) and addressed any extra sub-part at the end (if asked). Basically, I did not mention the subparts specifically. Will that be a problem?

even if someone says they did the same mistake but didn't get penalised, that won't be of much help to you because every evaluator is different.

Has everyone written 3 options in each case studies?

i took 3 options for first case study and 2 for last 5. in the retrospect I think i should have chosen 2 options for all 6. 2 broad options one based on selfish interest, and other based on public interest, and always rooting for the latter in subsequent sub-parts.


I came across a toppers ethics mock test where they followed similar 2 options approach. that topper i remember got good marks in ethics. so not quoting more options is not a trouble, especially when the more the seeds you sow, the more the plants you have to water.

There is not hard and fast rule..esp that jumbo case study.. subhas prabhat.. there were only two options that is either select or reject... Aur select karna hi uska answer tha... Reject karne k cons jada pros kam the .. so case study can have its own solution without resorting to multidimensional thinking as Cult in UPSC

Eg Environment notice question one can say option 1 withdraw notice option 2nd-  issue notice with time for complying with standards 

Or one of the extremes is the answer 
Eg Prabhat question either u select or reject candidature 


bhai 2 option approach is best, sari creativity agar dikhani ho to course of action ne dikhani hoti he jo puchha hi nahi gaya. last time mene 2 options hi diye the 2021 me and my score of 98 in gs4 was decent given my poor performance in 2 pagers that year. so don't worry about that.

For average candidates getting extraordinary marks in case studies is difficult.  Generally they will write three options. Two extreme and one middle path. Not many candidates can write innovative options. 

However, in section A there is more scope of improvisation like use of quotes; good examples, counter arguments etc. thus more scope of differentiation in marks. When we give less time to section A like 1hr 20 minutes 3-4 questions get compromised. So one can find many candidates giving mains after mains but getting marks in range of 90 to 100.

I agree. It appears to me that "Case Study Apologists" have demonstrated very extraordinary overtones towards sacrificing diamonds for glass, albeit in richly complex and subtle ways.

I am very confused. On one hand i feel twas world history q, but reorganization of states is a technical term used in state reorganization act 1956. there were 3 type of states Part A B C and one territory Part D. as ongoing process we can state telangana state, new demands of states like greater nagalim, bodoland etc and territory like changes and reorganization in jk ut etc.

I just hope that it is Indian History q, albeit it's not mentioned anywhere in the q specifically.

i think essay was easier this time, gs1 tougher, gs2 similar, gs3 very much easier, gs4 tougher and lenghtier, qualifying language papers easier, optional papers more or less similar. overall i think same level as 2021 broadly. but since vacancies increase by 299 that should pull back the cutoffs.

But my assumption that it's not world history Qn rather it's more oriented towards Post independence or Modern India is based on the following factors

1) Firstly I have History as my Optional subject ,so writing question on French, German or Italian unification is a default choice if there's any mention of word "Nationalism" which was not mentioned in this Qn 

2) Secondly in the question ,the word "states" 'S' was not in capital which is pre-requisite if we're talking about Nation State like France , Germany etc


3) Thirdly the word "continuous ongoing process" is used in question to refer to the events that's been still going on to the events of statehood demands in India, in the context of world there's little to no reorganization going on ,only thing that was in vogue atleast till 90s was decolonisation that's a different aspect altogether


4) Lastly "administrative Reorganisation" is used more likely for Internal classification inside a country ,so it clearly indicates it is asking about provincial reorganization within a country and UPSC unlikely to ask about internal classification of any other country except India

Hindi is not my mother tongue ,so I didn't check the Hindi translation ,if that brings more clarity ,someone pls either add to or refute my assumption





I just hope you are correct. since history is your optional, that lends greater credibility to your arguments. i also attempted it from indian history perspective only.


on your Hindi translation point, there is a term used ->"pradesh" and few sources like collin dictionary define it as "a state, esp a state in the Union of India" which also gives a ray of hope

UPSC must rethink its role as A Merit Watchdog. 

Take the case of 2022 GS4 PAPER. TO ME, that paper is absolutely senseless to say the least. In other GS (1,2,3) to a larger extent one can go with prior preparation. But in GS4 case studies : No one can prepare beforehand for Case study Part other than seeing PYQ and making sense out of it. 

I wonder whether this exam is a Time test or Aptitude test for A Future Bureaucrat. If UPSC does give more time for students to think and write,  they can really write brilliant answer which makes a lot of sense. 

But by Giving Gigantic Section A part with Editorial like Case studies in Section B, that too to finish it off in a span of 3 hours, The whole process becomes a mere ritual

Breaking Mental resolve of a Sincere aspirants doesn't make any sense as it deprive UPSC to see who can bring innovative solutions to ever lasting problems in India. 

I left one case study. While writing, my two fingers stopped responding for movement as it got paralysed in between. Yet i couldn't complete. 

If i think in GS4, Time is LOST
If i don't think and Write, Quality is LOST
IN BOTH CASES, MARKS ARE LOST!!!

I STILL DON'T HAVE CLUE HOW DID PEOPLE FINISH THIS PAPER WITH QUALITY. SALUTE THEM


The gs4 paper was analytical, lengthy and complex and I also missed significant marks-equivalent questions. this paper has potential to ruin my prospects of success and this is my 4th attempt. But I still believe this was the finest gs4 paper crafted in the history of cse.


To argue that upsc needs to rethink it's role as merit watchdog simply because you missed a case study is very mean and myopic. Try to look from their perspective. Extremely limited syllabus, too much competition and rigid framework skeleton of question paper pattern (13 two pagers with 3 quote questions, 6 case studies like always). Yet the way they innovated in 2 pagers is beyond beautiful.


yes the case studies were mechanical, but if they weren't it would have taken even more time to solve them. Bureaucrats often require quick decision making like in cases of disaster management, naxal attack, health emergency etc. if you complain about a lengthy paper to the extent of demanding upsc to rethink it's role as merit watchdog, you better self-introspect. 


Also, I can assure you, if you truly work hard, failure to solve a paper or to achieve success in cse won't hurt you to the extent of breaking your resolve.everyone can write brilliant answers if upsc gives more time, but only few who diligently burnt the midnight oil for days weeks months and years can write brilliant answers in less time.

The principal source of my discontent is not simply the fact that you questioned the role of upsc as watchdog of merit system, but the supremely incompetent reasons you used to justify your stand.

Problem pata he kya he, kuch logo ne  pehle case study kiya usme time jyada laga, ab unhone expect kiya tha ki 2 pagers short and simple aye because unke pas time nahi tha, short questions unke liye convenient rahenge. upsc ne iska ulat kia, aur wo log pareshan ho gye.
Upsc ke gs4 2022 paper ki tareef karna "Yes Master Attitude" promote karna nahi he, ise exercise of freedom of expression kehte he, jiska misuse kuch log wrong criticism karne me bhi krte rehte he.

@Street_lamp i second u. this year UPSC just tested English reading capabilities and comprehension in paper 4. Content and context of questions were as usual, infact I found it easy and straight forward. 

UPSC just made paper verbose and tried to confused people with useless data, hiding matter of concern required to solve cases. For Instance prabhat and shubah case study, faltu data bahut tha ..UPSC shabdo me gumaya hai is sal, not conceptually gumaya.


In short, CSAT me English kamjor walo ki Lanka lagi hai, jiski reading speed kharab hai unki bhi.. so saying paper was tough..

Paper was tough, if we consider length and English reading capacity of general masses, it was easy if we  see as per Ethics Syllabus.


UPSC tested, ram katha sunane k baad, apko issues kitna samajme aya... Real life me aisa hi hota... Esp girls😂 .. matter kuch aur hota hai...guma fira k batayege..... Samajne wale gist samaj jate... Same happens in professional life also.. direct koi baat na karta, sab sale guma fira k baat karte and that skill of understanding gist, must have for Bureaucrats.

GS4 is the most over rated paper after prelims. An IPS who was caught cheating scored one of the highest in Gs4 in the previous years he gave mains. 

Moreover, why this craziness of testing ones writing speed? If you really want to test a candidate's aptitutude in ethical situations, give him more time to think. 

Even a real life administrator is never in such a hurry. 

Anyways, after 6 attempts, I have been thoroughly disillusioned with this examination process. Rther than questioning the illegitimate and illogical process of selection, coaching wallahs will always encourage you to find fault in yourself. (akhir bread and butter Hai inka). 

UPSC needs serous reforms, otherwise youth will keep wasting their youthfulness over this shoddy exam.

This is my first post. Since the mains exam, one thing has been going in my head regarding the essay paper.

In section B, I attempted the 8th question - "Just because you have a choice, it does not mean that any of them has to be right".

Contrary to the Hindi translation of 'right' i.e. 'sahi' , I interpreted 'right' in the fundamental rights, etc. context. I defined choices and rights.Rights - as claims of individuals against state. Choices - as decision making, speech, practicing religion, etc.

I just want to know if anyone else has done the same. I began the essay with the Anuraddha Bhasin case, where the Supreme Court has allowed the 'choice' of using internet as a right for freedom of expression & profession, but fell short of recognising it as a fundamental right itself. Thereafter, I explored 3 broad headers:

- "not all choices can be rights"

- "some choices have to be rights"

- "There's need of a balance between choices, rights & responsibilities."

Would UPSC allow such interpretation of the question? Any inputs are appreciated.

This winter evokes deja vu in me. In 2019,first time I waited anxiously for upsc results, which were declared around 12 AM on Dec 20. On seeing my roll no in the shortlist, I went wild. In went on a long ride on my bicycle, lost in ecstatic reverie. 

winters are my favourite. when i was a kid i used to wander in my entire village during deepawali days and watch rangolis and rate them doing all this on my bicycle. at times i wonder how pre internet times were unnaturally beautiful and joyous. I don't remember missing internet to lead a fulfilling life back then. I'm thoroughly convinced than internet has enslaved the human essence.
