Mathematics Optional Group UPSC 2021

People with mathematics optional who are aiming for CSE 2021, please join this discussion forum so we can have relevant discussions on issues specific to our optional subject. I have been trying to look for people with math optional online, but it is quite difficult as it is a sparse population. Most people have Sociology, Pub Ad., History, Geography as optional subjects. Libraries have the same problem. There is no currently active group on forum either. I tried civilsdaily habitat platform but the math group is inactive there.

We can discuss strategies to finish syllabus, topics to choose (rarely does someone study all the 13 topics), discuss best source materials and books, ask specific math problems, discuss previous year papers, etc.

It took me 10 minutes to figure it out. Is maths even suitable for me?! :P :P

Can someone help with this 2016 PYQ

Hamilton's characteristic function (S) is defined through the equation: dS/dt = -H where H is the hamiltonian

This is the only instance where UPSC has asked from this concept, I've just noted it down separately. Don't think we should spend a lot of time of it. Let me know if there are any doubts, I'll send you my solution.

Can anyone confirm if this is the right method for the question? I'm not sure if we can take adjoint of 4 matrices in multiplication the way they've done it. This is a 2013 PYQ.

If not, please let me know of an alternate solution!

Hey thanks for this. One more thing, there is no potential energy involved here, right?

This might not be correct also because taking adjoint will not give the complement of lambda. Can't we just show that eigenvalues of |A|I are real? That should do it I guess

@Archand Were you able to solve part b of this?

Yes. No potential energy as no external forces.

I'll try this. Thanks. IMS has put some inner product solution that freaked me out! :P

I wasn't able to solve most questions in this chapter in the first instance. People say that often happens in dynamics and fluid mechanics!

This again, is a new concept wherein it is best we write this down and then try to do similar questions in mock tests. Just like in exact differential type questions we try to find terms that can be represented as a derivative, here also we do the same with respect to time. First find lagrangian and then try to reduce it.

Hello guys!

This will be my first attempt in mains with maths optional. I am yet to complete partial differential equations and real analysis topics.

Can someone suggest a good source (book or online lectures) for completing these topics quickly?

Does anyone have the answers to the pyqs? Not detailed solutions, just the answers will do.

For online lectures, check Exademy or Mathocrat. But you won't be able to complete them quickly as they take time (particularly Real Analysis)

For PDE, skip Charpit method if you're running out of time as questions are rarely asked. Do applications of PDE well (sure shot question comes from here). They look really difficult but every question follows a strict framework. So if you do a couple of them, you'll get the hang of it.

Real Analysis is a really tough portion (the toughest along with Modern and Fluids imo). You won't be able to reach a level in such a short time where you can solve questions easily. So if you're looking to maximise your scores this attempt, try to strengthen other areas. Linear Algebra, ODE, Vector, PDE, Numerical Analysis, Complex Analysis, LPP are all doable portions.

I found this group to be helpful in the sense that it talks about mathematics with more depth than the others. Do take a look if you feel there are some doubts you want clarified.

On a side note, our very own@AJ_ is putting in some posts too!
