Not reading anything

  • So, I am not reading at all. The max I am sitting is for ~ 2h 30 min. Guilty as charged. Tried movies, series, took a break from reading, but to no avail. Still not on track. Low on motivation and very insincere. Only planning, not following. Revision gone for a toss. Optional not done.  Magazines not read. And despite this, not reading anything. Gawhhh!

What to say, can't even recommend watching history lectures on YouTube, one need motivation for that too.

If you've engineering background try mathematics then like solving csat questions or even cat level arithmetics for change of mood. (works for me)

Otherwise solve daily current affairs mcq from websites, if motivation is severely low then just submit and read. do it just like we play one video after another on YouTube.

And if nothing works, do some workout, exhaust all the remaining energy and sleep comfortably.

You have tried a lot of things already.

There is this trick that you can use. Make a to do list for a week but make sure it's very simple to follow. Have a 2 hour slot for thing that takes 45 minutes. I think small wins would give momentum.

It depends how you spend your day from the start to finish. If you have waste much of the time in the morning you are unlikely to feel motivated to work since it feels like the day is already gone.

Though if you can pick up studying in the morning but then lose motivation and spend it on other things like YouTube, movies, mobile, you need to keep either a lock on your phone or keep it away. If this is the problem I suggest locking it inside a cupboard, because in case you want to get it you have to go extra steps and you might realise the futility of it or the addiction it holds.

Making a list of tasks is generic advice, but by this point am sure you have modified a list to do multiple times. It isn't about planning now, but rather actuating.

When you don't feel like studying, don't, just stop. But then don't do anything else, because it's very easy to fill in time with other non productive stuff.

And when you don't feel the motivation to even start, you try finishing one chapter, if that is too much try one page or one para even. Most of the times problem is to get started.

I have faced every single problem to study there is and even if I don't have it, I am sure I have had something similar. So I hope this helps.

@Neyawn A direct question to you sir about productivity. In one of the session you've shared the back like start studying within 30 minutes of waking up. I'm doing so from couple of months. But Forest App is there on my phone and it's not helping now.

I want to eliminate screen time for 6-7 hours i.e. waking up 5 to noon. Kindly tell me how.

For some context, I read newspaper (physical) and optional lecture notes (physical) till lunch but I feel constant urge to search something.

@Bepop  Filling time with non productive activities. You spotted it. YouTube and telegram study channels- I waste lot of time there, with the perception that I am learning new things, which I might have not done earlier. Many a times it happens so, that I get to know a few extra things, but by that time, hell lot of time is spent... and then to pick up a book or move onto optional/magazine---becomes a task in itself.  And then when I lag with the schedule, a new plan is made. It's  followed for a day or two or three with the intent of completing the lagging portion fast. But doesn't happen, and the pile of incomplete tasks add up and more lag is added. Subsequently, as a result---making of another plan ...and the vicious cycle continues.
So like this, I am pushed back to square one.

@Neyawn says that don't extend timelines for leftover stuff. Rather return to it later with a new timeline. eg. allotted 5 days for X subject, don't make it 7. Switch to something else. Return later to X. also sometimes unintentional postponing helps. you realize that some portion is not that important etc.
And some backlogs cannot be cleared. eg. newspaper/CA. better to let go and try to be consistent again. It's also a vicious cycle for me. I guess, one has to fall and get up again and again. That's the only consolation I have. don't lose hope. good luck :)

hey!

You may try "Your Hour" app. I found it better than the forest app. It helps in customising the time allotted to each app and once that time has elapsed the app is auto-locked and we cannot access it till the next day. Also it constantly displays the time spent per app has floating timer and total phone usage in notification bar always.

The constant display of time spent makes one guilty of wasting so much time+ auto lock for addictive app helps in curbing the usage. Further there are various fasting challenges for an app and no phone usage challenge also. They help by inciting our competitive feelings and the need to win.

I reduced my daily average phone usage from about 5 hrs to 1.5 hrs by this method only over a period of 6 months. :P

Recommended this to a lot of my fellow smartphone addiction victims and it helped them also to reduce their usage. So you may also give it a try.

Regarding the urge to constantly search for things-

just keep a pen and paper with you and keep noting down the things that you need to search and designate a particular time of your session to internet research. This way it would help you in reducing your time spent on there internet too. Also since you would have a list of at least 3-4 topics to search on you would feel lesser urge to switch to other time-wasting sites on the net and your work would be done in lesser time.

Hope this helps!

Good luck!

@AlexanderSupertramp installed and addiction level is Addicted.

Let's see how it goes, reducing it 10 minute everyday.

Update: so tried with tweaking the schedule and switching off the phone. (Didn't lock in the cupboard, had to see a few video lectures). But going beyond 5.30 h seems to be beyond my capacity :(

Revision- didn't start yet.

No mock tests either.
