5 down.. 2 more to go.. (4 actually)...

Not going to comment on how the paper went till 16th evening... I'm just glad that half of the process is over..

Just a matter of few days now.. Relax for some time if you want...give rest to your hands.. But dont waste time in these 5 days.. Optional can make or break ur chance in getting that interview call..

P. S: Koi meal ni di upsc ne toh.

Also, It was raining cats and dogs whole day yesterday.. I even got fever  because of the sardiii... and couldn't revise much last night.. I'm just glad that the fever ended last night itself.

At my centre, only water rained. No cats and dogs. Don't know about your centre. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@SnowLeopard Don't be surprised. It happens. I attempted 190 in GS1 last year (because didn't know much about Art and Culture and didn't write random things). My friend attempted 250. I had 85. He had 73.

While I agree with your pov that completion doesn't guarantee higher score but there's more to it.

Probably you might've scored higher than 85 if paper was completed. Also chances are you had better structure and content compared to your friend.

Have y'all ever felt that you could've done but still couldn't. Due to minor faults of our own.

You'll to spend 40/- for solutions. It also has hindi grammar portion apart from solutions. I couldn't find its pdf version yet.

In dono words ko 1 sentence mein use karna hai ya separate sentences for each?

Same afaik, can someone confirm this?

In dono words ko 1 sentence mein use karna hai ya separate sentences for each?

Same sentence only. Thats the challenge. I saw these answers in PYQ book or somewhere else(not able to find now) but they used these 2 words in a single sentence

that's disha publication book who's link i've mentioned above. I guess source of confusion is how they've given the solution.

Does anyone else feel like that the actual content one ends up using in the exam, the only things that we needed know to write good answers (and what is possible to execute in that time crunch), is actually less?
And throughout the year we just end up doing-reading a lot of unnecessary stuff?

Yes!
That's why one of my friend once mentioned, "whatever content you've, that's enough to clear this exam(GS portion). Trust whatever you've and faltu fomo ni regarding value addition"

If I had this realisation earlier I would’ve gotten away with much lesser amount of studies and might’ve actually had a life for past 1-2 years 💁🏻‍♀️😂

You're not the only one who didn't have a life.

Hey guys, I'm late to the discussion party but felt like giving an update :p

Had really good hopes with GS (except ethics section A :p) and essay went fine too. But optional went equally down the hill to not even secure interview call. I've a science optional, knew how to derive and solve whatever asked in the paper. Couldn't attempt due to lack of practice to actually do it in exam.

To the next time now! :)

Is there any NCERT dealing with these topics? Need it for state pcs exam.

Hello to all.

I have been a beneficiary of this beautiful community, yet I have never been an active participant.

When I left my job in Dec 2018, I promised myself 2 attempts. Was fortunate to write mains in my 1st attempt. Gave myself a leeway of 3 attempts after I couldn’t clear prelims in 2nd attempt due to multiple reasons including severe post Covid symptoms. Now I have experience of 3 prelims, 2 mains and no interviews. I was not expecting anything from my 1st mains in 2019, as I was unprepared. But this time I was prepared to the best level.

Analysing my 2nd mains - I am fairly satisfied with my GS and Essay papers. Was able to attempt all within time, with average and good content. During 1st mains, writing 15 questions within 3 hrs was a challenge for me, this time, I completed the papers. This was due to extensive answer writing practice, both pre prelims and post prelims (Was part of MGP Cohort 4 and AWFG). Was fairly able to cover whole syllabus of GS due to notes prepared before prelims.

The only thing that has reduced my chances is my optional. Despite having notes compiled, solved PYQs, and multiple revisions, I could not ensure a good attempt (as per my expectations). Probably because science optional require much more revisions and applications. Learnt it the hard way. Will rectify it in my next attempt.

Have not lost all the hope, yet I do not want to keep all the eggs in just one basket. I had planned to get back to a full time job, irrespective of how my mains go in 2021 attempt. So here I am, after a full 10 days break of binge, travel and socialization, starting to look for a job. Also, after 3 years of full time preparation, I now understand that giving full time to UPSCfrom this point onwardsis not worth it. With multiple revisions already done, I think giving future attempts will be possible with a full time job (People with such experience can share their take on this). I have realized the importance of last month struggle at both prelims and mains stage.

I have written this to express my gratitude to all the members here.

Especially@Neyawn- I met you after my prelims, and your suggestions helped me prepare better.

@PurplesunbirdInteracting with you, helped me remain calmwith respect to optional. Thanks brother, and all the best for state pcs.

@Jammu@LetsGetThisBread@Celeborn@Steph_Curry- ypt group and constant 'wake-up' notifications helped me increase my efficiency on a daily basis. Thanks friends.

@PureheartThanks for collaborating with me on essay preparation, your insights were really helpful.

It's mutual. Though I still feel I could've connected even more wrt optional because I didn't give optional its due weightage. And that's where I lacked in my mains preparation too. Yes, we have our learnings of science optional. What does it actually demands. Should surely improve next time!

Best of luck for your job! :)

The forum is so quiet ...

Atleast no nonsense utterances take place here as on tele group... utterly low level texts are posted there.. I don't feel like opening tele now...

Experts may please shed some light on expected mains cut off this year.. how did you find as compared to 2019/2020 paper...

Wrote last three mains and in my opinion-

GS-1= almost same level as 2019 but easier than 2020

GS-2= Easier than 2019 but tougher than 2020

GS-3= Easier than 2019 same as 2020

GS-4= Tougher than 2019 easier than 2020

I think cutoff should  be little more than 2020 if marking pattern remained same.

Please also factor in essay paper..

Based on what I could understand from the tg group yesterday.. the insiders said that in essay many are getting marks in double digits.. number of such candidates is more this year...

Also gs3 marking is a bit strict..

These may be speculations but considering the authenticity of the info they gave in the past..it seems to be true..

I think cut off should hover around as last year.. slightly on the lower side though

Madhukar guy deleted some of his messages, can you share what were those?

@AureliusM  and did you use connecting phrases? xD
3.6k views

Ohh. I didn't try to force them. Jahan pe sense ban rha tha wahan kiya nahi to next start kar diya. Last year mere 105 mostly is liye the kyunki I went full historical on upsc. Aur koi dimension hi nahi dala. Lag rha tha ki essay nahi history ka paper likh ke aaya hun. Ye ek topic me hua. Dusre topic me bhi aise hi kuch bahot unidimensional essay likha tha. Main khud apna paper check karta to 105 nahi deta.

Is it true that most people score more than their expectations, especially when they're not hopeful of a good score?  Because from what I've noticed, despite not having any specific content or essay practice, they were able to score average(around 120s) in essays.

This is with regard to science or engineering optionals.
Has anyone attempted the paper poorly in the previous mains attempt? If so, can they share the total marks of correct questions attempted and final score in the result?
I could only attempt 200-210 marks of questions correctly in my optional while around 400-420 range is required to get a decent score of 260+ score. Can anyone share their past experience? I'm curious about how the effect of scaling plays when performed below average.

@Forumite but even scaled marks are nowhere matched to other optionals 🤣
So, apt reward is there.

This is no longer the scene. Check optional scores of the past 2 years.

Ethics questions this time were asking 'with illustrations'. that was very tricky to produce hypothetical examples with clock ticking.

Are illustrations ≈ examples?

And I thought they were asking me to draw relevant diagrams. Lols :)

3.3k views
I thought illustrations meant diagrams so I drew diagrams of the scenarios I could think about like a comic strip

This was sarcasm, right? :P

@Duryodhan Last year case studies were tougher but with 3-3.5 pages only
This year, on average, there were 4-5 pages writing space which indicates its lengthy nature.
More or less same level as last year.

Right? Because I said the similar thing to them but none accepted this. It was my first mains this time and asked people who wrote both.

Those who just gave last year's mains told me it's 3 full pages + leftover space after the question. But it was clearly 4 full pages+ left over space.

Considering 250 words limit and comparing with GS1/2/3  space, I didn't try to fill up the pages at all. Just wrote whatever was relevant.

Anyone with Maths or engineering optional?

How was the toughness of paper this year compared to 2020?

In Civil engineering, paper 1 was relatively easier while paper 2 was  tougher.

So in totality, the level is identical with last year.

Many humanities optional candidates are claiming that their paper was easier. Is the trend same for engineering and maths subjects??

Physics wasn't mentioned here but I guess that should be relevant too.

Paper was easy, anyone with good practice of derivations and memorization of formula would've done pretty well.

Ye maths Wale to 130 ke neeche baat hi nahi karte.. aur yaha apna 130 top notch mana jata hai 😬

Also it's binary. Either you will be around 300 score or will simply lurk around 120-150 marks including both the paper.

@Minato bhai ..for god's sake don't say ki .geo optional me samay kam lgta h 🙏

My friend had geography optional. We are discussing how much time is required for optional revision. He said 3-4 days at max. This was it's answer post his first attempt. While it takes weeks in maths/physics optionals.

@Bubba_gump might not be true for you but for him it was. Eventually he did get an amazing score. So 🤷🏻‍♂️

Geography ka to pata nahi lekin history to revise kare nahi hota.

Aur nayi cheeze aur perspective ate hai wo alag.

Waise science subjects are different in many ways, takes time too. But if one has taken good effort does it guarantee great score?? History me I know a few ppl who are languishing in average score of 230-240 despite doing what is required. I think this is where difference lies.

But why do ppl like engineers still take humanities subjects? Mostly coz they can't below a certain number( it's very difficult to get really low score of 120-130s in history for both papers combined), so it acts like a safety net while science ppl can't take that for granted.

There's another factor. Pretty much no one takes their branch seriously in engineering colleges. We're scared of anything that's remotely related to calculation. So humanities becomes the obvious choice :P

2nd attempt and first mains.
The result was on expected lines and was quite well prepared for it. No time for self-pity, only 6months left for the next mains. Silver lining being, I know what to do now.

@Purplesunbird What lessons did you draw ? What are major and common mistakes ? What are must do things ? All those who wrote mains....share your insights.

They were mostly personal shortcomings so not sure how much they'll help. If you wish, I'll write down those points in few days for sure. Also, I'm not sure about my own assessment as marksheets are yet to be released.
